I had a great experience at the Magnolia Massage & Holistic Health Service (San Francisco). Jennifer was courteous and skillful. Being 7 1/2 month pregnant, I have muscle tension in several areas of my body. Her massage offered a good relief.

My experience with Marie was life changing! She was very attentive and caring, it was obvious to me from the start that she really wanted to help me. She helped me to unblock my chakras and to release all my pent up negative emotions and self limiting beliefs. Well, as Marie says, you do all the work on your own, but undoubtedly she is the catalyst for you to open up the side of you that will allow you to heal yourself. I've had a rough and painful year but after this experience I know that I can put that behind me and step into a new cycle of health, abundance, wisdom, and harmony. Marie is truly special! I would highly recommend to anyone seeking holistic healing to get in touch with her for a session!

I have been working with Sara Groton for around 2 months now, and I am so happy I found her on Thumbtack. As a holistic nutritionist, she is helping me find and understand the deeper meanings behind my decisions toward food and leading me towards a healthier lifestyle. I would highly recommend her!

I took my 18 year daughter to Sean because early Dec she started experiencing severe abdominal pain from a UC flare up. She was diagnosed in March 2016 but had never experience this kind of pain. After going to the ER a couple of times and even being admitted into hospital for a weekend the pain continued. As a mother I became desperate to find a way to relieve my daughter from the pain she was suffering. I started researching and came across Sean and Blue Bear Healing. I looked on his website and read his reviews. I didn't have anything to lose and my daughter was open to try anything. I am so glad that I took that step and Sean was available to see my daughter on the same day I called him. My daughter had 3 sessions with Sean and every time she saw him I could see her more relaxed. I do think that Sean's ability to look into her emotions and physical being helped her through the pain that is now almost completely gone. She is still seeing a medical doctor and taking medications but mentally and emotionally Sean has helped my daughter through this tough period in her young life. I also think he has made her see herself in a different way that will help her throughout her life.

I have gone to Chiayueh for a variety of ailments over the years - from anxiety to running injuries - and I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is an extremely talented Reiki master and massage therapist who has devoted her life to making people feel better. Chiayueh combines her background in Eastern holistic healing with training in Western massage therapy to form a practice that centers around long-lasting treatment of the body and mind. Most importantly, she truly cares about each of her patients and pours her heart and soul into her work. Make an appointment with her - you won't be sorry!

I began working with Tatyana years ago while recovering from a severe break to my sacrum. It had been a few years since the break, but I had tried many different types of treatments and none provided me with any relief and my life had been substantially altered from my life pre-break. The first session got the pain I was feeling in everyday under control, but after that she began to work with me so I am now able to be nearly as active as I was before the injury. I would imagine it would be lovely to work with Tatyana without injury or pain, but her extensive background in healing methodologies, she is the best medicine for recovery.

Dale Fanning is a wonderful acupuncturist. He achieves comprehensive, lasting healing by blending his skill in acupuncture with a high level of intuition, patience and empathy. He imbues the Chinese Medicine view of whole body health with these attributes and the results are nothing short of fantastic. I went to Dale with a constellation of symptoms including chronic illness, musculoskeletal issues thru years of wear and tear on the body, as well as basic urban stress and insomnia. At my initial intake, and now updated at my weekly visit, Dale tales the time to get a thorough view of my health history and current state. His treatments consistently reset the dials, improve my condition and leave me feeling centered and full of life force! The sessions themselves are deeply restful; most of the time I fall into a deep sleep as the parasympathetic nervous system is allowed to kick in. This carries over into the evenings where I always sleep best on treatment days. Overall my conditions have improved substantially. As many people do, I regularly receive chiropractic treatment, massage, physical therapy for specific muscles/joints and have a great family doctor. Of all the things I do, the treatments with Dale are the deepest are always the most effective across the board. This is due to the very nature of Acupuncture, which is it treats the source and the symptom. Over the last 15 years I've received treatment from some of the most well-known and highly respected acupuncturists in the Bay Area and the west coast. I took a lot of care and time to write this review as I would never suggest a practitioner to someone lightly. I recommend Dale without hesitation. His treatments are on par with best in field, and in his own style, he surpasses my previous experiences. I understand he is working in the fertility field and have heard nothing but accolades from his patients I meet in the waiting room. He seems to have a capabilities across a wide range of issues. I say he gets extra points as he has gone to lengths to be able to accept multiple insurance plans to make it possible for the largest number of people to be treated. 5 stars for Dr Dale for sure.

Sasha is a yogi. He is definitely the greatest yogi I know, but then again he’s the only yogi I know. Sasha takes yoga very seriously - he reads lots of books by the great yogis, studies chakras and views it as a spiritual practice above all. He took a Kundalini Yoga instructor class and wants to help others on their spiritual path. I once visited Sasha with my girlfriend, and since he’s a friend of mine, he offered us a class which he called “simple”. Since I’m definitely not a yogi I found nothing simple about this class. Let me tell you, I was quite impressed with Sasha’s command of his body. The things he does with his stomach are kinda crazy. My muscles were sore for 3 days after that. This was mighty impressive to watch Sasha practice his passion. Sasha approach to yoga is very spiritual. He hums, chants mantras and all that stuff. If you’re into spirituality, you might get a kick out of that. He can use yoga to invoke rather intense psychedelic experiences in himself, and probably in you, too. You have to agree that this is an impressive ability. Yoga is an ancient art of discovering the reality of your existence. Yogis train for many years to attain the absolute truth and perceive reality for what it is. Those yogis who attain to truth are called gurus. Sasha is no guru yet, but he has definitely worked through some of his attachments with the help of yoga and plant medicine. So he might help you start the journey of self-discovery, as long as you don’t get too attached to yoga or Sasha in the process, and focus on the experience that he can help you have rather than his explanation of your experience, which would probably involve chakras. You will also probably get more healthy. Actually, if you practice consistently - for sure. But if you’re looking at yoga as an eastern-flavored gymnastics, Sasha is not for you. He is well above that level. You’d be better off booking a class at your local gym.

After going to various community acupuncture clinics for years, I was thrilled to meet a practitioner whose skills far surpassed any I had yet seen. Don is highly intuitive, precise, and his treatments are very effective. He asks good questions, and uses few needles. He gives amazing, strong, and thorough acupressure massages, and he has reasonable rates.

Krista is the best. I'm a distance runner, and I was having pain in my left leg that was effecting my training. Working with Krista, we took a holistic approach and worked on my diet, stretching and running gait. I couldn't be happier with the results. I'm faster and so much more injury free, but also generally in much better health.

Ilya is an absolutely incredible healer. He is kind, thoughtful, and helps you get to the root cause of what is going on. Filled with wisdom and insight, he blends a mix of cognitive therapy, accupuncture, and sometimes even some other non-traditional elements (e.g., essential oils, sound therapy) to help you move in a positive direction. He has helped me tremendously in working through some very difficult life moments, and I have recommended him to a number of friends who have had similarly fantastic experiences. Whether it's getting out of a rut, dealing with pain, or something else - Ilya can help.

I had a "frozen shoulder". After seeing a Chiropracter and a sports medicine Dr.,after x-rays and a cortisone shot I was only partly relieved. Then I had Cheryl work on me. The cortisone shot had greatly relieved my pain, but not mobility- after only 2 sessions with Cheryl I had full range of motion return. She made me believe in the Therapy part of "massage therapy". She was careful and thorough and professional. And I was helped enormously.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

      • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
      • Nutritional medicine
      • Botanical medicine
      • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
      • Hygiene
      • Counseling
      • Minor surgery
      • Homeopathy
      • Acupuncture
      • Intravenous and injection therapy
      • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

      Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

      Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

      • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
        • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
      • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
        • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
        • Do I need a referral?
        • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
        • What will the co-pay be?
        • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
      • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
