Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

James agreed to paint the walls in my rental property in Corona in Aug. 2018. I requested to use with eggshell paint, but he painted with the flat paint. He agreed to fix but asked for additional payment for the material. I sent him additional money, but he never show up.

Hired to fix drywall and paint bathroom. Painter left paint drips on our brand new shower doors, drips in paint on wall, rather than smooth. He also painted bathroom ceiling with flat paint. He agreed to return to fix spillage and repaint the ceiling with additional paint we purchased, but never returned to complete. He also took four cans of knockout and drywall, as well as our receipt. He stated he was going to return for us and get what he needed for our job, but didn’t. He made a bunch of excuses for not returning. Had we known that he was not equipped to do drywall repair, we would have hired someone else, which we ended up doing anyway. We paid this contractor and another contractor to fix his work!

Ismael is very nice but I don’t believe the job was done as best as it could’ve. I asked for satin trim/matte walls, but without asking me if I wanted to pay more for satin paint the day of, he did all matte. Until I saw how ugly the matte paint looked on my doors/trim the next day, texted him to see if he could fix it. He also got paint on my outlets which I ended up cleaning myself. He agreed to fix but I would have to pay more, which I had no problem doing from the start. After he did my trim and door I noticed he painted over my matte walls with the satin paint and now when sunlight hits certain parts of the wall you can see a clear difference in finishes. I’m disappointed.

Outstanding attention to detail!!! Erick and the Tapia Team painted our entry room, stair rail and upstairs perfectly. They hit all walls, doors & baseboards with two coats for a beautiful finish. Amazingly, this was by far THE LOWEST PRICE quoted among several contractors. If you need interior or exterior painting look no further...GO TAPIA!

Nice guy but not reliable. Showed up late one day, no show, as promised, the next day. He did not call or message regarding his no-show status. He stated that he did not show up because of snow, no phone service, and his wife giving him grief because of his working late and it being Christmas. I gave Henry the benefit of doubt, and still got taken advantage of. Initially, things looked promising and I was looking forward to working with Henry and Phil on other paint projects. I even gave Henry a $1,800 cabinet, which I could have easily sold. Sadly, things soured. Paint lines were not straight. Shadows and inconsistency in paint application. Touch up was messy, overspray on my wallpaper and on my shelves, poor patchwork around windows, and he increased price from initial consult. In my initial quote, paint was included in price ("$380") but I happened to purchase paint when I went to the paint store. Henry made no deduction. When I brought this to his attention later, he stated that he would comp the paint on my next paint project, which was okay with me. Unfortunately, my job became a less priority. After three weeks or so of lack of communication and broken promises my patience wore thin. I had to pay another paint contractor to fix Henry's mess. The new contractor was amazed that I had had my rooms painted by a "professional" painter (Henry). The new contractor assumed I painted myself or picked up workers from Home Depot. The laughed when I stated I had hired someone with over a dozen years of experience (Henry). Hiring Henry cost me more money and aggravation than was necessary, which is the absolute truth. His comments in rebuttal to my review are not wholly truthful and distorts the facts. Henry lied when he said I saw the snow storm on the news, and when he stated that I in a rush to get my home painted "before Christmas." I accommodated him! Fortunately, I had bright construction lights in the garage, which we've had for 10 years and never used, because Henry was unprepared for dim light, which he appreciated. Had he bothered to show up, as scheduled the following day, my husband was going to gift Henry the lights because he liked them so much! Lastly, I do not smoke "weed." If did, we live in California where it's LEGAL, and what I do in the privacy of MY home, is MY business, and none of Henry's. As for my husband, a career U.S. Marine, athlete, and body builder, he is definitely the "boss" and has been for 30 years.

Ed and his crew painted the entire interior of my house including all of the cabinets. Ed made knowledgeable suggestions for the best paint to use for the cabinets and did 2 coats of paint on walls and cabinets. Ed also found the right people to put glass panes, glass shelves and lighting in some of the upper kitchen cabinets and they look great. I decided to rip out the ugly carpet and Ed and his crew laid down tile flooring matching to the tile in the baths and kitchen. It ended up being a lot of work, but Ed communicated every step of the way and got everything done ahead of schedule and it looks great! Thank you!

I hired Clinton and his crew to paint the walls and ceiling in our living room, dining room and small upstairs hallway. We have really high vaulted ceilings so this wasn't a job I wanted to do myself. He was first to respond and when he came over to see the house any question I asked you could tell he knew what he was asking about. Once they started we noticed an issue with the paint finish, he and his crew were quick to fix the problem and still finish in the time frame in which they quoted. Also there was this ugly patch job that someone had done to the house before we moved in and he just took care of it and you can't even see it! So awesome! His price was very fair and I'm very happy with the job they did.

All five apply. USCA did an excellent job on our exterior painting of our house, not only were they prompt, they were diligent, detail oriented, careful, talented, dedicated and worked very hard to achieve a great outcome of which they did. Our house looks brand new, and our neighbors have said that also.Scale 1-10 they get beyond a 10. Thank you Ben, Jose and the others who worked very hard tirelessly and with heart for the job they were doing. They also finished sooner than expected.
