Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

I used simply moving, last minute, literally booked it the day of to move. I was so incredibly happy I picked them. The price was incredible, they showed up on time, moved everything efficiently, quickly, didn't damage a single thing or complain about having to carry it to my apt. I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking and will be calling them for any future moves.

I had an excellent experience. The company replied to my Thumbtack request immediately. They also communicated well through email and text messages as we got closer to the date. The movers were quick and professional. The movers also removed a curtain rod and put one up at the move-in location. I was extremely pleased with this company!

We had such a great experience! My husband and I did a long distance move from Los Angeles to Portland for law school. I was pretty nervous about which movers to go with — you are entrusting your entire life’s belongings with them so did extensive research on every option from large moving companies to PODS to UHauls. We were also pretty budget conscious so were shocked at the prices we kept getting back. But when I got the quote from I Need To Be Moved I was excited but honestly a little skeptical because of the affordability compared to everyone else. Plus I’ve dealt with so many scammers online I really wanted to do my due diligence. Their front office was incredibly kind and patient, answering all our questions, providing referrals and video testimonials that made us confident enough to move forward. The moving team was so professional. They clearly take their job very seriously and treated our belongings with the utmost care. The team even drove hours out of their way en route to Portland so as to avoid the wildfires (which we hadn’t even thought to ask about). I couldn’t recommend this company more. I know moving is a really high stress experience but I Need To Be Moved made the transition painless.

George and his team are great. George responded to my request immediately and was able to move our "new-to-us" vintage pool table within the same week at a reasonable price. I highly recommend AV Blliards for pool table moving needs. Thank you George for your service!

Great service from Last Minute Mover's. The guys were friendly and helpful, and they got things going quickly when they arrived. David is very easy to work with and took care of all the details. Chris and his team were very easy to work with and made sure everything was wrapped for transportation. They even transported my green patio plants, which I know some movers don’t like to do. They were a few hours late, but that’s more due the clients before my move needing more work done than expected. I would say try to be first in the morning if punctuality is of concern. My move was in the afternoon. I did help load and unload to make things go faster, which they didn’t mind.

Frank,Raul and Marcos were great. Efficient, timely, careful and always professional. Huge move (5BR,35 yrs) and we discussed strategy/plan. Divided up project into 2 days for time for us to prepare for storage then the traumatic 2BR condo move to smaller livings space. Their knowledge/ability for spacial and attention to degree of care for each item was due to their communication with each other and owners. Protection wrap for everything we didn’t appreciate was a blessing. The large artwork, furniture and Eliptical was impressive. Already have a reservation for the return move next year. I would t think of using anyone else.

They were very efficient and professional, despite our lack of clarity of what needed to be moved and what was staying. They were always cheerful and helpful and went the extra mile.

Noah did a fantastic job moving us out of our apartment and into our house. He and his partner worked carefully to get all our furniture safely out of our 2nd floor apartment. They were also very helpful getting everything set-up at the new house, even taking the time to put floor protectors on the legs of our sofa. I would recommend Noah to anyone needing help with a move.

1) Communication was outstanding. From the time I accepted Frank’s bid he made sure he had all the information he needed to facilitate an extremely smooth move. He offered suggestions that were very helpful to make things easier on our part. 2) Punctual. He and his foreman arrived exactly as promised. He thoroughly reviewed the layout of our new space with us so they would know where to put out things once the truck arrived. 3) Efficient. The truck was unload in the most efficient manner and everything moved into the space in an organized manner so we had a very easy time locating exactly what we needed as we unpacked. 4) Careful. NOTHING was broken or damaged. They were very careful with both our belongings and new home. They made sure floors were covered and protected. They even protected the concrete on the driveway so it wouldn’t get damaged by the unloading ramp. 5) Professional. Frank obviously has a lot of moving experience. He could not have made things easier for us. They even removed all the boxes and packing materials we had unpacked before they left. They moved furniture around for us, with a smile, after we changed our mind on it’s placement. I overhead our truck driver ask Frank for a business card because he was so impressed that he wanted to recommend him to people. Frank has a great work ethic and a lot of pride in what he does. His goal was to make our move as easy as possible and to ensure we were happy with his work. I definitely recommend Frank and will hire him again for our next move.

Alena was quick to respond and answer my questions about booking, and accommodating when I needed to make a change a few days before moving day. Mike and Eugene did a great job on moving day. They wrapped all our furniture and were very careful with all our belongings. When we got to our new home, they asked us and made sure they knew where everything should go. They were polite, communicative, focused, and professional. Would definitely recommend them!

We were impressed by the prompt reply of Mr. Gurrola and by his friendly manner. He was able to accommodate us when we only needed to move just one item. He kept in touch and answered all our questions. His team worked with care to ensure that the armoire was properly wrapped and transported. We definitively will recommend him to our family and friends in the future.
