Doug showed up on time after picking up my new door at our local hardware store. He jumped right in and removed the old door, cleaning up after himself all through the process. He made a few adjustments to the opening to ensure the new door would fit properly and carefully installed the new door and frame. Doug took the time to explain the installation process and I was very satisfied with his work. He is a true professional and I am so glad I chose him over any of the other installers. Even before hiring Doug, he offered advice on which type of door would work best for my application. I followed his advice and chose a fiberglass door for weather resistance and longevity. I did have other lower estimated but I am so happy I chose Doug Gillespie Doors to do the job. Doug also prepared the frame for painting and showed me how to remove the weather stripping before painting. I highly recommend Doug and will contract him for any future door work.

Doug needs to be more understanding towards customers who have no idea what materials they are supposed to be ordering for him. I am not a construction professional and have no idea what I'm supposed to order if he does not come see the job in advance to give me complete information or take measurements. I was asked to purchase a door for him to install but wasn't given a jamb size. I do not install doors by trade so some of my questions may seem naiive or petty but as a customer who has dealt with my share of bad contractors I am more concerned about the job being done correctly than the cost. In my opinion you cannot properly quote a job or provide a materials list without actually seeing the job beforehand. If I am being tasked with special ordering a non returnable door for him, I want to be damn sure that the door will actually fit before I order it. I offered Doug the business of replacing all of the doors in our house, he doesn't seem interested in our business or even looking at the job. Apparently it must just be a cultural thing?

For being an unlicensed contractor Renato still charges the same (or higher) pricing than licensed contractors. Solicited a bid for drywall installation and finishing and he was priced $600-$800 higher than both of the licensed general contractors who also bid for the project. We had previously asked him to bid for an exterior door project which he was comparably priced against another licensed contractor, so for obvious reasons we went with the licensed guy. Pays to do your research and get comparable bids, I'm much more comfortable going with a licensed contractor for the same price (or less) than what Renato charges for being unlicensed.
