We hired Debby to assist with a kitchen and living room remodel. There was initially some miscommunication about the overall design and she worked diligently to offer solutions and was very professional.

We needed a very custom job in our house -- one that required a fair bit of artistry, and Angelika really came through. Our puppy had torn off a piece of wallpaper which was too old to replace. We were hoping that an artist could somehow mimic the design to hide the damage. Angelika more than did the trick. I now dare anyone to ever notice that some of that wallpaper was ever gone! Five stars for sure. She was also prompt, kind and charged a very reasonable price.

I would like to thank Hector for his amazing work. My apartment is smart, energetic and minimalist, and is exactly what I needed. I had an idea, Hector patiently listened to them, and came out with something which was far better.

I used this company when i moved into our new house. Upon arrival, we had a chat about how I use the kitchen and my vision for it. She attentanvly listened and asked questions about my ideas. Independently, she set and organized the kitchen in a super logical and functional way. Also, she was very nice and pleasant to work with. After a long hard day packing the old house and unpacking the new house, being able to have a functional kitchen was the best investment we could have made. Also she has great taste and a great eye for decorating and making the rooms look wonderful.

Yes, some would think that one wood blind is the same as any wood blind. I regretfully found out that this is not true. I thought I would save time and just purchase the builders window blinds package that was offered when I was selecting the options for my new home. Well, after only six months of living in my home the wood blinds started to warp and crack. They made my brand new home look terrible. It was a terrible investment. I found Made in the Shade Blinds & More and they were able to schedule an appointment with me the following day. They came and educated me on the fact that all wood blinds are not alike and I just wasted a lot of money. They were able to show me wood blinds samples, explain and show me the difference between the wood blinds they offer and the ones installed in my house. All of the window treatments they offer come with a limited life-time warranty. The kicker is - I paid just a little bit more than I did when I purchased the builder package. Made in the Shade Blinds & More is an excellent company and I highly highly recommend them.

Terry is not only a professional but a gentleman. He came and gave me a price when he said he would be their. I had six contractors give me a price and to say they where all on time would be a farce. I had my house repipe so I had apx 32 holes in the walls and ceilings. All the holes were repaired and textured before Terry arrived. I chose Terry over the other contractors and I am glad I did. After he primed my ceilings and painted them he was not satisfied with the out come. He retextured my entire ceiling and repainted it. It turned out fantastic. He repainted the entire down stairs including laundry, bath room ,hall and family room. I could not be happier with the outcome. I would and have recommended him to my friends and family. By the way call him MR. T

Rachel saved our office. Organizing, decorating, purging, eBay, craigslist, framing art, everything we could throw at her she was able to do. Our staff immediately felt the difference and feedback has been that the space is much more enjoyable and fun to work in.

Gigi has been cleaning my house for the last 3+ months and has been so helpful and reliable. She consistently shows up every 3 weeks and thoroughly cleans every inch of my apartment and charges only for the amount of time she is working. She also takes the time to clean areas of my house that I neglect or don't even think of (like under my couch cushions). I am very happy to work with her!

Sid does amazing work. He is very attentioned to detail and collaborated well with me whenever there was a discrepancy in my apartment since it was so old. He did my bathroom floors and even though I was happy with both of them, he felt he could have done better on the grout work and offered to re-do it for free. I’ll use him for future projects no doubt, but he was a bit pricey for me. Regardless, you’ll get your money’s worth.

The Design & Order team have gone above and beyond to offer me their professional services as I redo my living room, dining room, and master bedroom. The services they provided not only included recommendations on furniture, draperies, and accessories, but they provided me with the capability to review their recommendations on the internet without having to leave the comfort of my home.

Devlyn initially helped me remotely with my condo that I bought sight unseen. I was potentially going to spend a lot of money making some drastic changes and she gave me some great cost effective options that I utilized and the result is great. Once in town, she also took a shopping trip with me and while I was totally overwhelmed, she picked out all of my accessories. As crazy as it sounds, the arrangement on my dining table still makes me smile daily. My place is so beautiful and I get countless compliments. Thanks, Devlyn!

Chloe came to our house and within one hour she put together a design, color scheme and items that we needed. She was quick, efficient and easy to work with. Within a few days she sent us a list of items that we had discussed and had a mock picture of the items put together. This process has been so easy and Chloe has been easily available and keeps the communication open. When we were sold on an item, Chloe quickly gave us other options which we loved. I loved that she worked with our style! Once everything was ordered she made a second visit to help us organize, hang items and put bedding together. Our apartment is really coming together and we are so grateful for Chloe's help. She is the best!

It was such a pleasure working with Laura! I'm a realtor and hired Laura to stage my clients home before we put it on the market. She was able to work with my budget/time frame and did the most amazing job! We got an offer the first day on the market! She is incredibly talented and you will enjoy every minute of the staging process! I will never stage a house without her!

Sarah has exceeded my expectations with her ability to really listen to my needs and then deliver the furniture and decorations that are ideally suited to my home's coastal theme. Sarah is accessible and very communicative by text, phone and email. Sarah comes up with clever ideas to beautify a space that I could never think of. Sarah's passion to please her customer coupled with her ability to create breathtaking yet livable home spaces is really quite remarkable. Sarah came in on time and under budget for my staging experience. She does not nickel and dime you. We set a flat fee for the work and she made it all happen in the time frame she structured. Sarah transformed my average home into a stunning showplace. We're 95% done, and are still adding bits and pieces as she perfects the place. I will put up "before and after" photos as soon as the professional photographer sends them to me. My sister found Sarah on Thumbtack and she said Sarah seemed to "get it" immediately and was enthused to help. I contacted other staging companies, but I liked Sarah the best and hired her. I will engage Sarah on my next project. I highly recommend Sarah's creativity, her untiring work ethic and her reliability. If you're getting three bids for your next staging project, consider asking Sarah for a bid. You'll be happy you did.

Thank you for transforming our "ugly duckling" house into a "beautiful swan." the surprise on everyones face is as they walked through the front door, set it all! we heard someone mention that it reminded them of an European villa. After everyone left, and the house was all cleaned up, the four of us at by the beautiful fireplace and enjoyed the beauty of our new surroundings. thank you so much of our gift. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
