Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

Should I tip the garage door repairman?

It’s not expected that you tip garage door repairmen, and normally they’re not expecting a tip for their services. However, it’s always a kind gesture to tip for excellent and friendly service.

Is it dangerous to replace a garage door spring?

Yes, it can be dangerous to undertake a garage door spring repair yourself. Fixing it requires having a working knowledge of how a garage door works and understanding how the parts work. A door can fall on you, and loaded springs can suddenly release and hit you. For this reason, it’s recommended you call a pro to replace or fix your garage door spring.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How often do garage door springs break?

Garage door springs break every three to seven years, depending on its quality and condition. For example, rust and cold weather can shorten the lifespan of a torsion spring.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Absolutely AMAZING business. My garage door spring broke, I shot him an email (and several other businesses) and he replied within minutes. Andriy is a young guy starting up his business but his care and attention to detail really do show. He showed up at my door promptly, didn’t mind the horrible mess in my house and garage (Im getting married in two weeks so there is wedding stuff EVERYWHERE). He could hardly even walk around in the garage, but didn’t mind it at all and went about his business. He also took extra steps I didn’t ask for or pay for, such as tightening my chain, greasing the track and setting my second car up with the built in automatic garage door opener. Apparently every time I synced one of my cars, I was resetting the code, which inactivated the other car. This went back and forth for years and I never fixed it. Until today. Both cars can open the garage. Awesome. I know the extra little things aren’t required, nor are they the reason for maintenance calls. I doubt anyone pays to have a technician come out to grease the gears or set up an opener. But he took his time to make sure I was 100% satisfied, and he made me feel like his only customer today. In addition to everything, his price was the lowest of all my quotes (over 15 quotes between Yelp and Thumbtack job requests). But the price does not reflect the workmanship. Andriy is a pro. And despite his age, I could tell he knew a LOT about garage doors, and has truly committed himself to his trade. If he keeps this up, his business will go far. Which is impressive, he looks like he just graduated high school 😜 This is THE ONLY garage door installation/repair tech you need to know about. Put his number in your cell phone. Don’t even bother searching anywhere else.
