We contracted with Michael Delavega on Nov. 14, 2016 to paint the exterior of our 2800 sq.ft. home. Michael, Michelle and Jose did an outstanding job of listening to our wishes. The level of prep work was excellent, as well as the paint of our stucco, trim and aluminum garage doors. We had a problem selecting the right paint color for our garage doors, and their team went above and beyond to help us get it just right. The pride of their workmanship is obvious in all the little details they perform. As Michael says, "We want you to be 110% satisfied with your paint project". They are friendly and a pleasure to work with. Their pricing was fair and very competitive. We highly recommend Michael's Discount Painting!

Impressive! If you want the job done right hire Kept Fresh! A team of 4 girls came to clean my house. I had them do window sills, fans and baseboards. I have an older home and was surprised how beautiful my kitchen and bathrooms turned out. They were all so kind and friendly. Very hard workers. The lead person was very detailed and professional. She made sure everything was done and I was happy. On their way out they even cleaned my front door and patio!! I can't wait for my next cleaning. Beautiful job!

Jonny was so amazing to work with! Him and his crew painted our entire house, ceilings, walls, baseboards, doors, everything. They showed up on time and were so great. They had advice on ways to do things and overall just had the best customer service. Couldn't be happier with their work. I would hire him again in a heartbeat. Prices were very reasonable as well and he was very upfront with cost.

Jeff and his team did a great job painting our single story 2,100 sq-ft home. While his quote wasn't the lowest, he's insured and bonded, which is very important. You should know that the paint brands he offers are Dunn Edwards and Vista Paint. We really wanted the Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige and luckily, Dunn Edwards did a color match for another customer recently and already had the formula in their system. Jeff brought a crew of 3 guys (Jeremy, Rick and Tao?) and they got the walls, baseboards and door casings done in 3 days. They were fast, professional and paid close attention to detail. The one thing that I was a little disappointed in was that he doesn't accept credit card, but other than that, I would recommend Jeff and his crew any time for a painting job.

Rudy and his team did an amazing job texturing and painting the walls and ceilings of our 2 bedroom apartment, along with painting our interior doors, trim, and baseboard. Rudy's work is very precise yet still fast! He even came back for touch ups after our job was completed. Not only were we extremely satisfied with his work but with him as well. He's very professional, punctual, and thorough. We will definitely use Rudy for all our paint needs in the future!

Marathon is the only company I trust to work on my 2 homes. They remodeled my out dated 3 bed/1 bath house and turned it into a beautiful and spacious 3 bed/2 bath. They up graded my galley kitchen and turned it into a gorgeous and spacious open kitchen. They added a much needed bathroom, turned my very small living room into a great room, gave me functional closets, extra storage space and got rid of that unsightly popcorn ceiling. Isaac worked with me hand-in-hand from start to finish and insured I was happy with the progress on my house. He did excellent work from design, to demolition, to rebuilding. He did everything from plumbing, electrical, windows/doors, drywall, flooring, paint (indoors and out), fixtures.....and more. Marathon completed the remodel on time, went above and beyond, and did it at a very good price. It is rare to find an honest, trust worthy, company that takes pride in their work. Well, Marathon is it and I couldn't have asked for a better contractor. Thank you Marathon!

The owner of Rios Custom Carpentry, Erik, was very courteous & knowledgeable in what my husband & I wanted done, which was repainting our backyard shed's roof, repainting one of our bathrooms' vanity & medicine cabinet, & repainting the master bedroom's bathroom ceiling this past month (March of 2018). Since he did an excellent job on those projects, we re-hired him to repaint all of the doors & door frames inside our house!

Sam and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Sam was professional, courteous and provided us with a quote that no one could beat. Advanced Painting Group was referred to me from some friends in my former neighborhood where they had completed beautiful exterior paint jobs for at least three homes. My neighbors are fans of the colors we used (complementary trim suggested by Sam, base found by me and he matched) and I love the final outcome. If you are looking for a fair price and extremely good work (Freddy the supervisor on the job was a gem!) then look no further! Final note: There was a delivery delay for some hardware for my front door and Freddy came back on his own time to install for me at no additional charge.

I was fortunate to find Preece Contracting Services -- a recommendation from my next door neighbor -- following a natural disaster. At a time when prices could have been inflated due to supply and demand pressures I was charged very reasonably for excellent repair work. This led to working with Preece on additional kitchen remodeling work to great satisfaction. A thoroughly satisfied customer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
