Garrick is very patient and engaging with our 7yo son. Our son loves his guitar lessons and wants to play. He's the real deal with his own gigs and he teaches using music we love. Garrick gets 5 stars because he unexpectedly requested to join us when we purchased our guitar, picked an appropriate used(!) one with metal strings and had it modified to bring the frets in closer for small fingers. His lessons feel customized. We recommend Garrick!

Let me start off by saying, Andi is an incredible teacher. No, he is not magic; but he is capable of steering your guitar education in the right direction. I played guitar on-and-off for many years, it has been lackluster for the most part. Over the years, I’ve watched thousands of guitar lessons on the blackhole that is known as Youtube. Sure, I gained some knowledge, but in a very disjointed way that didn’t seem to push my guitar playing forward. My practice sessions were ineffective and I never seemed to follow a logical path to achieve my goals. I wonder how many self-taught guitarists are in the same boat? Then I started taking lessons with Andi. With some effort (and an instructor to motivate and direct), I begun to truly learn and understand things that I’d been too lazy to tackle in the past (modes, inversions, picking exercises). I’m somewhat embarrassed to say, until I took lessons with Andi; I never completely learned a song. I would pick up fragments of songs, and then move on to the next flavor of the week. Andi will spend weeks (if necessary) reviewing the material with you. He’ll break whatever solo or song you wish to learn down into bite-sized chunks; he’ll even send you slowed down mp3’s to help you learn the material. Trust me, this is very beneficial when learning the subtle nuances that make your favorite guitarist special (Prince, Nile Rodgers, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler). I have no way of really quantifying the improvement that happened while taking lessons with Andi, but my personal satisfaction has gone through the roof. My fingers and wrists are stronger, my technique has tightened, and my 16th note strumming is getting ridiculously funky these days. I could sing praises about Andi for days, but you don’t you want to try him out and see how it works for you.

I've recently started taking beginner guitar lessons from Mark. So far it's been a great experience, even with my zero musical background. Mark really focuses on making the experience fun and identifies well how to motivate me as an individual, by teaching me songs I'm passionate about and making me understand how the music I like was made. I can only recommend him as a teacher.

Ed is a working music professional who has been teaching private lessons in both guitar and voice at Gryphon Stringed Instruments for over 35 years, making it the longest anyone has been on Gryphon's private lesson teaching staff. With his many years of experience, he provides knowledge of all aspects of guitar and vocal techniques that few can match, plus an affinity for teaching students at any level of ability. Ed offers guitar lessons. Ed teaches a broad spectrum of musical styles, and plays nylon-string, steel-string acoustic, and electric guitars. Here's a listing of what he offers in guitar instruction: * Jazz Guitar: This includes everything from playing simple swing chords for song accompaniment to be-bop, modern mainstream jazz, and Brazilian jazz. Ed has transcribed and arranged literally hundreds of songs in these styles and has developed excellent materials that deal with soloing over chord changes and jazz theory. * Acoustic Guitar Stylings (beginning through advanced): This includes basic folk guitar, country blues, bluegrass, contemporary pop, rock and country, and classic rock repertoire for acoustic guitar. Ed has a wealth of written materials in each of these genres. * Classical Guitar (beginning through advanced): He has a repertoire ranging from Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical period composers to the great works of Spanish and Latin-American composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. * Electric Blues and Rock Guitar: He specializes in the styles of blues masters such as B.B. King and rock and blues stylists such as The Beatles, Clapton, Hendrix, and Santana. Ed offers lessons for beginners. For students who are brand new to guitar, Ed likes to take an approach from two angles: * getting the student started with basic chord fingerings and very easy songs * introducing the student to reading music, starting by learning the notes in the first position (first four frets) Ed offers voice instruction. He is as highly regarded for his vocal talents as he is for his guitar prowess. He has developed a proven method for teaching voice that really helps to remove the mystery of vocal technique and help people overcome the barriers that are often associated with singing. The musical styles and repertoire that Ed offers to voice students include jazz, rhythm and blues, folk, and rock. He also teaches harmony singing (a favorite of his). Ed offers group classes on Monday nights during the fall, winter, and spring. These are eight-week courses focusing on specific styles such as Brazilian guitar, acoustic rock, acoustic blues, jazz repertoire, etc. He also offers occasional one-day workshops on Saturdays. Check back frequently for new listings of Saturday workshops.

We have been working with Ms. White since January 2016. My boys, ages 6 and 7 walked out of their very first lesson knowing “Mary Had A Little Lamb” and this quick, concrete “take away” gave them a sense of excitement and confidence! Ms. White is very thoughtful with her instruction. She has realistic and responsive goals--like helping accommodate a variety of sports seasons and understanding the difference between her student’s temperament and attention span. She has nurtured an intrinsic and age appropriate interest and exposure to the world of piano playing. My boys pick up and play piano on their own and they love teaching their father and me their new skills. I would highly recommend Ms. White for piano lessons.

I started taking guitar lessons with Mike last year, as a beginner. Over the eight months I've been playing, I've noticed major improvements in my technique. Mike has taught me everything from new chords and scales to fingerstyle and flatpicking. He uses a blend of exercises and guided practice to help you grasp the material, and will show you ways to learn and play various songs of your choosing. Additionally, I have a much greater understanding of musical theory as a result of my lessons (arpeggios, cadences, rhythm, the ability to read music, etc.). I should mention that Mike is patient, flexible, and accommodating...traits that I really appreciate, given the fact that I'm a working adult and have many other demands on my time. All in all, Mike's a great teacher and I highly recommend him.

Fabulous teacher! Since the last time I had any instrumental lessons were back in elementary school, I was a bit nervous about learning how to play an instrument, but that nervous all disappeared because of Simon's very accommodating, welcoming, friendly teaching style. He accommodates to your current skills and have taught me numerous songs and drills to help me become more agile with the guitar. Being a beginner (2 months since I first started playing), I always can't wait to learn new songs and drills in my weekly private lessons. To any beginners out there wanting to learn how to play the guitar, I DEFINITELY recommend you to him. You won't regret it!!

Guitar lessons - fun and interesting, any style. Young but highly qualified guitar instructor, I play in an instrumental progressive band (rock/metal) as well as a jazz band. I am also an intended music major at SF State and have taught the advanced guitar class at my school for the past year, so I have plenty of experience. I was a beginner once too, and I know how frustrating it can be to start, and how embarrassing even it can be when you can't play when others around you can. I can teach you the ways, show you the ropes, and make you a solid, respectable musician. Whether it be song writing or soloing that you want to work on, I am solidly trained in many styles of guitar and will be able to help you progress in any genre with guitar playing that you would like to learn.

My name is David Lees. I teach guitar and bass, both acoustic and electric. My specializations are in modern and classic rock/pop. I am originally from Manchester England but in the last three years, have been living in the Bay area for three years now. Background: With over 10 years of experience in group and individual instruction both here in the U.S. and in England. I have taught both children (as young as six) and adults in schools and privately. I also play the drums, guitar and bass with different bands on both sides of the Atlantic. My teaching philosophy: I specialize in working with absolute beginners to intermediate levels. Learning and playing music that they love and can relate to, is important in teaching students to play music. This way, the students can maintain their enthusiasm and motivation for learning, and continue to make progress. Students learn the fundamentals of guitar as they play and learn to play their favorite songs. We discuss the student's preferences in music during the first lesson. From the information I gather during the first lesson, I will create a customized lesson plan for the student. For the students to reach their musical goals, it is important for them to be have fun and enjoy the lessons; it is also important for them to be challenged in their individual skill levels. In the past I have worked with students whose musical tastes include The Beatles, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Metallica, Muse and many more.
