We moved from Carlsbad to Carmel Valley in one day. MGB movers were excellent. They arrived on time and worked very hard. They were extremely pleasant and delivered all of our belongings (including a baby grand piano) undamaged. They did not have any hidden fees. The final cost was very reasonable and was exactly what we were expecting. We are currently renting while we find the right house but when we move we will definitely use MGB relocations again.

Movers were on time and well equipped with gear and supplies to move everything inside my apartment. Professional, friendly, hardworking guys. The move took exactly what it was estimated to take and there were no surprise costs. All around a good moving company. Will likely use again if I decide to move in the future.

From the first phone call to the last box moved Tony’s Delivery and Labor were responsive, punctual , and worked with a sense of urgency. I called the phone number given for the contact of the company and it was the owner Tony who anwered on a Sunday morning. He confirmed the date and time I needed the movers and verified addresses. On the day of the move his team called me letting me know their arrival time. They arrived 15 minutes prior and were ready to work 5 minutes before the appointment time. The team arrived with a large truck , 3 movers , and all the equipment needed to move to not damage any items as promised. The team did not waste any time and was able to move my two bedroom condo in less than 3 hours. They were more than willing to pack and move any items and asked where we wanted everything to go in the new home. The only reason I hired this company was from reading the reviews, seeing how many reviews there were , and seeing how many times they were hired. Their work ethic directly related to all that I read.

Frank is the most professional, kind, courteous, polite, trusting, reliable and careful movers I've ever worked with. First, I must share with you that in the past 30 years, I've probably moved approximately 12 times using other companies. In each one of those moves, at least one appliance was damaged and something special was broken that couldn't be fixed or replaced. Frank is the first mover I've ever worked with who handled each and every item with very special care and DID NOT damage or break one item. In my book, that is one the most important things you want in a mover. I was also very impressed with how quick he was in responding to my request for a mover and his extremely fair pricing. He also followed up several times before the move to make sure he had every item required to make my move successful and smooth. He arrived at the exact time we arranged to start the move and worked non-stop until the move was complete. And, when the move was finished, he had me check each room to make sure I was completely satisfied and happy that every item was exactly where I needed it to be. And, one of the most impressive things Frank did that no other moving company has ever done, he made a follow-up call the day after the move to make sure I was happy with the move and if there was anything else I needed that was overlooked. Of course, I didn't need him any further as he did everything perfectly the day of the move. That is true professionalism! I only wish everyone I deal with in business was like Frank. My life would be happier and stress free. I recommend Frank to anyone who is looking for an outstanding moving company. Thank you, Frank, for such a great job. You are an amazing person and you did an amazing job!

Moving went smoothly and great! Both guys were friendly and efficient. The only hiccup was with the start time. The movers thought we were starting at 7am, but it was scheduled for 9am. I rushed to my old apartment since they were already there, and didn't want them to have to wait or reschedule. Maybe a confirmation call the night before versus the day of so there's no confusion?

We contacted Larry when my husband had to have foot surgery the week we were moving. Larry gave us a full no nonsense quote. We moved a one bedroom apartment about 20 miles. Larry and his son showed up early and began hustling. They are not afraid to break a sweat!! They moved everything as quickly and efficiently as possible while still being careful with our belongings. Larry and his son were professional and caring with our belongings. They did not "milk the clock" like other movers do. I will be contacting Larry the next time I move and I suggest you do the same!

Although I was slightly nervous at first due to some of the negative comments on this page, my boyfriend and I decided to take a chance on Mike&Shaw due to their unbeatable price. We compared with 5 other moving companies in our area and they provided us with the lowest price for our move (more than $400 in savings). From the first comment/question regarding the move, Marie was very attentive and timely with her responses. She was very honest and direct regarding cost, supplies provided and overall expected time frame of our move. She contacted me several times during the move to ensure we were on track and that we had no concerns. In addition, all the movers who assisted us were also very professional and timely. 2 men moved us out in 4 hours (from a 3rd floor apartment with no elevator access) and 2 men moved us in in 2.5 hours (into a 2nd floor apartment with no elevator access). Very hard working and honest professionals. Only negative was the length of time it took the movers to drive the truck to our new apartment. Took them 9 hours (with a regular car usually is 5 hours) due to having to drop off/pick up different movers in the process. Despite this delay, we are definitely glad we took a chance on this company and will no doubt hire them again for future moves.

I was in desperate straits in a need to move all the furnishings of one duplex (that would be two fully furnished units) - into to a larger back unit in very short order. I was recommended to PTM Movers here in Los Angeles by a friend. I spoke at length with the proprietor, David L., and it became readily apparent to me that by the end of our conversation that David of PTM Movers - highly valued the reputation of his company and they services offered. At that point I decided to take the gamble, particularly given the fact that I had delicate furniture items that were at once weighty, unwieldy, and required kid gloves in order to get them from point A to B. Within the short request time of 24 hours, PTM Movers sent his team; T&T Moving Co., and I can only attest that in my days of moving, I have never been more content. I've got to say that Tim and his crew don't bump and grind and clobber. They glide effortlessly and follow a very structured efficiency hierarchy established by Tim himself. Although it may not be obvious to the naked eye of the nervous home-owner or renter who values their possessions, there is skill to moving, and the distinction between experienced and not becomes quickly obvious. And Tim and his fellas come very, very prepared and take every precaution. You practically have to implore them to rest for a few moments and rehydrate - that's how devoted to do a great job they are. You want your moving job done properly by a company that understands and respects the power of "word of mouth" and stakes their reputation on it, then I highly endorse PTM Movers of Los Angeles.

I called around for movers to help me with a Sunday move. I decided to go with New Life Moving because they had affordable/fair pricing and easy booking. I also liked how they didn't have hidden fees and charge a ton of extras. They do have a 3 hour minimum but I think that's pretty standard if you call around. It ended up taking around 4 hours and 15 minutes for the entire job. When it came to moving day, the movers had called me when they were on their way to the house. We had the pleasure to work with Abel and Eugene. Both guys were professional and hard-working. I have a thing for efficiency and they were working at a nice pace and were extra careful with our furniture/personal items. They wrapped up the furniture to make sure they wouldn't get scuffed/damaged and also had some boxes for us to use for our clothes. The truck that they came with was very large and we probably didn't even fill half of it. They packed up our smaller boxed items into a larger box they had as well. We had an extra stop for a pickup before our final drop-off and they were very helpful during it since it was a bit more difficult with the maneuvering and messy space. Abel and Eugene had good attitudes the whole time and didn't take any breaks. They were kind and very easy to work with. We definitely would use them again in the future. Fair pricing, efficient, professional and easy!

Honestly I would recommend these guys over and over again. I called them with a 24 hour notice of moving a 1bdr and they were the only moving company to be able to accommodate my needs. I had Edward and Sergei as my movers and these guys were professional, friendly and hard working and made this whole stressful situation into a more relaxing experience. They handled my belongings with great care and took the time to make sure I understood all that was being done.

Good communication throughout the whole process, on-time day of, and overall great to work with! Our movers, Igor and Shawn, were conscientious and hardworking. Interacting with them via Thumbtack was very useful as they had detailed info re what went into their rates and it was a convenient way to do Q&A before speaking further by phone.

I hired the crew to pick up items from my POD and make an additional stop to get furniture from a store. They handled this expertly. Once to my home, they unloaded and promptly filled my apartment with all of the items. Very motivated and easy to work with. If you're looking for movers, go with these guys. The rates were good, and the service even better.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
