I was extremely impressed with James -- we've had bad experiences with piano tuners in the past (not from Thumbtack) and James was everything we could have hoped for. Professional, punctual and good at his craft. We are so happy to have found the piano tuner we'll use going forward!

Jeff is a fine piano tuner and repairman. He has done a great job tuning, voicing and generally tweaking my Yamaha U1 into top condition. Jeff is consistently on-time, very affordable, friendly and happy to explain his recommendations and work.

Tuned my piano and repaired a number of issues. Had all the tools he needed, and plenty of expertise. Recommended some more maintenance but did not push me to spend more. Very positive experience.

I cannot say enough good things about Daniel and the Bay Area Piano Tuning Service!! I run a music school in Alameda and Daniel has been tuning all of our piano's for decades!! Recently, I moved my wife's piano into our house and Daniel has come out to tune it and do some minor repairs. The piano plays and sounds great!! I will never choose another tuner/repair man as long as Daniel is working!! He's also super knowledgeable when in comes to purchasing new/used piano's to get the right fit for you!

Jackson is a great piano tuner. He not only does that but always gives my baby grand a good cleaning. He even recommended a way to deal with the humidity of living in San Francisco. Hi highly recommend him!

We recently moved to our new house and it came with a piano! However, the piano had not been tuned for a long time and had some broken keys. We had it serviced by the piano technician, and it sounds great now!

About

A Note from Linda: In 1973, I was the very first female admitted to the Los Angeles Chapter of the PTG (Piano Technicians Guild). At that time, I was the third woman in the country admitted to the Guild. Breaking the glass ceiling was not easy. Tuning: A combination of aural (tuning by ear) and state-of-the-art electronic tuning helps achieve the most stable and precise tuning for each piano. Manufacturers recommend 2-4 tunings per year. Concert pianos require tuning immediately before each performance. It is important to note that all piano manufacturers recommend tuning your piano whether it is played or not. Routine service prolongs the life of your piano. Without periodic servicing, the instrument will deteriorate, causing potential expensive repairs at a later date. Pitch raise: A pitch raise is necessary when the piano has not been tuned regularly, thus causing the pitch to drop below standard pitch (A440). Pitch raises require 2 or more complete tunings that are done consecutively during the same visit. Repairs: Repairs can vary from something as simple as fixing a sticky key to something as complex as complete rebuilding of the piano. Regulating: Regulation is the adjustment of the piano due to the effects of wear and age. Voicing: Correcting the tone quality of the hammers. Reconditioning: With playing and age, the insides of the piano (the action) require maintenance to maintain performance. This work is done in the shop. The action of the piano is removed and then returned when the work is complete. Refurbishing: Bringing life back into the piano by renovating and restoring worn parts. Restringing: Time and humidity conditions can cause strings to become rusty or “dead”. Restringing is then necessary. Often, it is accompanied by complete rebuilding inside and out. Rebuilding: The art of completely restringing, repairing and refurbishing the soundboard and plate, together with replacing parts that have excessive wear, thus making the piano as good, if not better, than it was originally. Consultations and evaluations: When purchasing a used piano, it is always advisable for a member of the Piano Technician’s Guild to evaluate the potential purchase. Examination of the instrument will reveal both major and minor problems and the corresponding costs to repair. It is just like having a used car examined by a mechanic before purchasing.
