Incredible caring team and quality professional work! They turned a great home into an extraordinary one for a reasonable price and at a fast speed. All finishes were selected with a great design team and the owner making a normally difficult drawn out process take just a few hours. Two and half bathrooms were improved from “okay” to “spa quality”. They knew just what to do and how to complete our goals and where we could save money. This took less than 2 weeks. The kitchen was tripled in size and the results were well beyond what we could envision. It went from apartment style to a dream home kitchen in only two months while we were still living there. It looks so beautiful now and everyone loves it! Then we had many other projects to do from adding recessed lighting to replacing all the hardware and everything in between. They were very open to incorporate our vague ideas into achievable results. Other contractors wanted twice as long, or longer to complete the same tasks. Home remodeling is often stressful but not when you have a talented and caring team on your side. Hire with complete confidence and watch your dreams turn into reality! You will thank yourself that you did.See more

Bay Builders & Remodeling, Inc. We have been undergoing our main bathroom remodeling since last Friday, which is a week after since we met Bay Builders & Remodeling. So far, my wife and I feel so lucky to see Isaac Rozolyo(Project Manager) & Miguel (Crew lead) from Bay Builders & Remodeling. Our remodeling project began with the main bathroom, meaning we faced the water pipe issue after the demolition completed. This problem was kind of as expected in my mind but I will like to share our great experience I have had so far. (Will like to update with the work completion with the pics later on.) 1. Bathroom remodeling We got started this project because we were okay with the design after moved to this house, good time to do during COVID-19 and wanted to get our daughter, out of state, surprised in her coming home during Thanksgiving holiday. While we had a pretty bad experience with a contractor when we moved to this 2nd house but Isaac swept all out such our negative stereotype. Once I told him our work completion expected date, he proactively scheduled the logistics of trying his best to allocate the team schedule and a clear To-Do list for us in a day. We concluded he was the trustable PM to work with because the schedule was so visible and itemized clearly. Then Miguel came by a day before demolition to make sure beforehand. This is one of the good experiences we have with them. Talking to him, he explained briefly professionally. With this briefing, we had a pretty well secured feeling that it was a great decision for us to work with them. By moving forward to Demolition/Exhaust Fan installation/shower valve installation etc very flawlessly, everything looked so smooth to proceed remodeling work, but we faced the old water pipe, galvanized steel widely well-known issue... 2. Repiping Talking to Miguel, we found out we'd better repipe now during bathroom remodeling rather than we have to reopen the wall for repiping later like in a few/several years... Then called Isaac to discuss this additional request. We could talk to other contractors to have competitive estimation, but we decided to stick with Bay Builders & Remodeling because of the positive reasons above. Usually the general PM won't act that quickly but Isaac came by right away so we could discuss the issue to resolve transparently. As a result, the work scheduled to get started in 2 days, because the water supply issue isn't urgent at all. While we would like to update the work results after the completion, we have had a great impression so far such as clear scheduling, crew assignment, careful work and customer friendly/positive correspondence.See more

My parents has a property in Mountain View, CA for over 20 years and they decided its time for the house to be updated(hasn’t been remodeled for 30 years). They gave me the task to find a contractor and I started to look for contractors and scheduled a week of interviews. After I interview 2-3 contractors I met Tal and Guy with Decor Builders. We had a click from the 1st meeting and I felt I can trust them to execute the project for me. They came for the 2nd meeting with a very detailed proposal and paid attention to every little detail I asked(I needed them to take care of rough and finish materials). After 3 months that we remodeled the house completely- 2 bathrooms, kitchen, flooring and re-paint the house I can say with full confidence that I made the best decision I could have made. Tal and Guy were great and the crew were clean, productive, professional and the most important finished on agreed time. Definitely 5 STARS to Decor Builders!See more

I hired David and his team to do a complete remodel of my town home. I'm a very picky customer and "good enough" is not good enough for me. He was able to complete the work on time, on budget and to my satisfaction. He worked with me and helped (at times at his own expense) to resolve any and all issues that are inevitably discovered during complete remodels. He is responsive, honest and professional. I would recommend David and hire him again for my next project. This is what he completed. Strip down everything down to studs. Install external wall and attic insulation. Install new drywall. Install new kitchen cabinets and granite counter top. Install new windows. Install new front door. Install new water heater. Install new furnace. Install new tub and vanity. Copper re-pipe. Install new flooring (carpet and LVT). Install new recessed lights and updated electrical up to code. Installed crown moldings in all rooms. Fixed external stucco problems. Painted everything. I'm probably missing something but that is the major action items.See more

We interviewed 3 companies for our kitchen remodeling job. We had bad experience with our last bathroom remodel after going with the lowest bid that was also the lowest quality. This time Eitan from Build the bay came in as the lowest offer, but we decided to go with him for 2 main reasons. He is the owner of the company and not a sales guy like the others that we met with. Eitan also provides free design and a lot of explanations and very good advices about kitchens. After we designed the kitchen, Eitan recommended a few showrooms and joined us to make sure we get the right price and service. The remodel itself was pretty smooth. We really love our new kitchen, and we really enjoyed working with Build the bay. We definitely recommend them to others!See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront.
