JD has been working in LA as a professional dance instructor for ten years. First trained on the Arthur Murray syllabus, then the Fred Astaire Syllabus, followed by the DVIDA syllabus, he is a versatile instructor whose greatest strength is his ability alter his teaching style to teach to a wide variety of students from the perspective they need for their unique learning styles and goals. Whether you are looking to learn Salsa, Swing, Argentine, Ballroom, or some other dance style, you will be well prepared working with him. Two left feet? As long as it is an even number, JD has you covered. He has taught students with Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and one student who literally had half of a brain because the other half had been removed in a life-saving cancer surgery. No rhythm? That is actually one of his favorite challenges. Contrary to what your middle school band/choir teacher may have told you, it is not true that some people have rhythm and others don't. Rhythm is not something you can fail to have. It is not like being color blind or tone-deaf. You simply need someone to help you identify what you should be listening for. If you enjoy music, you will have no problems. JD will teach you the simple three questions that reveal what dance goes with which song, and before long you will be able to start dancing to songs from your own music collections that you didn't realize you could have been dancing to all along. I take great pride in my ability to tailor my teaching methods to my students so that they learn as quickly and enjoyably as possible. I constantly educate myself, combining information from some the best dance coaches in the world with information gleaned from some of the world's top educators in the worlds of music, physiology, psychology, neurology, visual art, health, and education among others.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
