Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

To find out how much it will cost to repair your appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

To help you determine if your fridge should be repaired or replaced, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians in your area.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an appliance specialist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation or appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, with no in-person contact. After messaging the appliance repairman, you can ask to set up a video chat or phone call to discuss what work needs to be done. Make sure to ask them how they handle payments, keeping in mind that paying in advance may be safer than handling cash or credit cards until the pandemic is over. Ask the professional what procedures and precautions they have in place to ensure safety during this time.

How can I find out if an appliance repairman or specialist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential provider varies based on state, city and local guidelines. Visit the official government website of your state or city to see which services are considered an essential in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

Do appliance repairmen or specialists offer remote or virtual services?

You should contact appliance repairmen and specialists near you before hiring them for the project to see if they can offer their services remotely or virtually. Appliance repairs are typically done in person, but you can ask if it's possible to have a virtual consultation or an online walk-through. If you see that a pro is offering remote services in their profile, message them to find out what those services include.

CR Appliance Repair did a great job installing a new Kitchen Aid stove with a downdraft system. They came out and reviewed the project first and then gave me a quote. The job took longer than expected so the, technician Eugene Varankou, came back out on Sunday morning to finish. He was excellent. Abel set up the appointment and texted me throughout the process with updates. I highly recommend CR Applicance Repair for your appliance needs!

The repair company was honest beforehand that an item was damaged beyond repair (by someone else, not them!) Which saved all of us time by not having someone else come out here. I respect their honestly and if I have an appliance issue in the future I'd be glad to call them back.

Matt is the unicorn of appliance repair people! He's the guy you hope to find early on in your appliance ownership life. He's smart and knows his stuff. He's articulate and explains exactly what is or isn't needed. He'll tell you the things to repair and when the machine should be sent to the recycling center. He works quickly and efficiently, you don't have to stand over him to make sure he isn't wasting time looking at the ceiling padding hours. My boss's friend was here while Matt was here and I believe has plans to call Matt for his own home. Matt is very responsive and lets you know when life throws a wrench and plans need to change. Then is quick to reschedule when things resume forward motion again. Bottom line, he's honest, reliable and we're planning to use him for other appliance maintenance.

I had an overall good experience with Professional Appliance Repair, although a language barrier made it difficult to communicate with the technician. The technician quickly diagnosed and fixed the issue. When the pro knocked a picture off the wall, breaking the frame, they were able to reduce the price by $20 so I can buy a new frame,

I contacted ASP to repair a broken clothes dryer and refrigerator water supply line. Scheduling options were flexible, the technician was prompt and knowledgeable. My wash machine was leaking and displayed a code, so I searched and found Pro Appliance Repair. They responded back immediately and came out the next day. The technician Sam was great even though there was a language issue. He speaks Russian and I don't. And not even the Google translator on his phone helped, but some how it didn't matter because he was skilled in ordering the correct part and repairing my wash machine. Their price was reasonable and all in all everything was done with the quickness. I highly recommend them.

I’m very glad that I have found honest and reliable appliance repair guys. I had an issue with my refrigerator and all my food after thanksgiving day started spoiling, Rick came quickly, made a diagnostic and fixed my fridge the same day, cause he had parts that I needed in his truck! Also he provided me with the warranty for 1 year. So I feel safe and satisfied! Thank you again Rick

Had a great experience with this company. They replied within minutes of me listing my issue. The repair was costly unfortunately but after researching the estimate it was within line of what it cost. My fridge needed a new compressor, but the tech explained that given the model of my fridge a new compressor would add 5-6 years minimum of use. That made the $1000+ fee worth it. The payment offerings were great and they even have a finance option (through a 3rd party provider) which if needed was nice to have. All in all while I hope to not need your services in a loooong time from now, I'd definitely refer anyone who ever needs appliance repair to ASP!

Experienced mechanic been one for over 11 years. Quickly diagnosed the problem and came back a couple of days later with the part and fixed it in under an hour. I thought they did great but their labor charges were too high for the amount of time they spent on the job. I thought the labor charge was a little high but I haven’t had an appliance repaired in a long time. In addition the $50 charge to check the dishwasher was supposed to be applied to the job. It doesn’t look like it was. ( I talked to James and he adjusted the bill ). A few bumps about billing but excellent mechanics and the bill was adjusted.

I started to do my laundry late Friday afternoon. When it came time for my washer to drain and spin, it just sat there. Through Thumbtack, I found All Appliance, which was able to come the very next morning. Gary was courteous, knowledgeable and eager to remedy the issue. His appearance was neat, and he was masked, which is vital in the time of Covid. He needed an extra part and drove immediately to fetch it from the supply house. Within an hour of returning, he fixed not only the original problem, but an old one where the machine was not agitating sufficiently. I had wondered whether a 20-yr old machine was worth fixing, but he said newer ones, with all their electronics, break down more easily. My machine should now be good for a few more years. I am grateful to Gary for getting my machine working again. His price seemed reasonable, and since he also repairs other major appliances, I will definitely use him again and refer him to friends.

I thought the price was far too much. $290 for labor and parts and only a year warranty for parts. I was not really given time to think things over or I may have just bought a new machine, so this part of the experience I did NOT like. At first it was only going to be three months warranty and I complained. In the future I think I'll buy a new appliance but I was told that the new dryers have so much electrical machinery that they break easily. I don't know if this is true or not. So, I was not totally satisfied. The repairman did not have the latch I needed in his truck so I waited until after the weekend to get the dryer repaired. I can understand needing to order a part, so that did not bother me too much.. just the high cost bothered me as LOT!! the VALUE was missing.

STOP, STOP, STOP!!! Before you hire this company, READ MY REVIEW. On October 15th my refrigerator freezer door no longer closed fully tight and snugly as it's supposed to do. Of course, I was immediately alarmed by this because all my food in the freezer would go bad if I don't address this problem quickly. So I jumped onto Thumbtack to find someone. I MISTAKENLY choose Urban Appliance Repair. Don't you do the same! When they reached out to me, I was very happy to hear that they could send someone out same day between 4-6pm. The technician Tim called me at 4:40pm to let me know he would arrive in about 45 problem. He got to my home about 5:45 which is within the promised timeline and still no problem. He took about 15 minutes accessing the problem. When he told me what he thought the issue was, I proceeded to ask him clarifying questions to broaden my understanding of the matter. Apparently, I was asking too many questions at which point Tim told me it was late and he had to go home. In essence, he was telling my I don't want to answer anymore of your questions so you can either get the repair done or not...but, I have to go now paying customer who I'm here to assist. Now mind you...I'm paying him to be at my home and consult me ($59 fee) on my refrigerator problem. They also don't tell you the flat rate labor fee is $190. His remark was totally unprofessional and counter customer service like. Well Tim and Urban Appliance management, PLEASE FORGIVE ME for being a senior citizen who may not catch on so quickly and wants to inquire before she spends her hard earned money. I believe in an honest days pay for an honest days of work, but don't get annoyed with the customers who keep you in business. I suggest additional customer service training for your staff. Oh, and by the way, thanks for not helping to resolve this issue before it got to this.
