Both movers showed up right on time and treated everything with care. In spite of some difficulties due to a very slow elevator in the building the move was completed efficiently and best of all nothing was broken! Roy and his team were responsive along every step of the process. My thanks to all involved. Sincerely, Frank Wofford

I was very pleased with my move by hiring Michael and his team. This was the first time I'd ever hired a company to pack and move for me. Their bid was about half of what the "big guys" charge while not sacrificing what matters most in a move: 1) knowledge of knowing that it will only be MY things on a truck, and 2) time frame. Other people who bid lower can charge lower prices because they will pack yours and someone else's stuff (and someone else's!) on a truck and then take up to a week to deliver, depending on where you are on their route. Michael and his team had a truck just for me; they packed me and moved me the next day. It was a seamless process. I kept changing the date on Michael as I only had a timeframe and not actual dates as I moved from SoCal to central California. (I only had a start date for my new job, but had not yet found a place to live). To each change his only response was: "No problem". He definitely took a lot of stress out of the process by being so accommodating. The packing was done meticulously and carefully - not one item broke! And the movers were fast and efficient - from the time they arrived at my new place in Monterey to when they left was around 3 hours! Pretty impressive. Overall, I am very pleased with Global Moving Group. I would use them again and would recommend Michael and his team to anyone! Thanks Michael!

Alpha movers were quick to respond, polite, quick - yet careful with our things. I got 3 quotes for the job and they were the least expensive as well. Will most definitely call on them again when we need something moved! 5-star service.

What a great local company!!! We're a military family and have been through MANY moves & Reliable is top notch. One of the best experiences we've ever had. We worked with Dan before our move. He communicated with us very clearly and we knew exactly how things would operate. On moving day, Seth and his crew were awesome! It was the Saturday this July when it poured rain for most of the day. The crew was super respectful of our possessions and our new home. Friendly, hard working guys who knew what they were doing. They were all very patient with our questions and concerns. Even after the move, Dan handled follow up questions promptly and to our complete satisfaction. In my book, there is no other moving companies in San Diego. This outfit is top notch. I would recommend them to my own family, friends, and coworkers without hesitation. Reliable Movers is aptly named and we're SO happy we chose them for our move!!

Last Month I have moved locally from La Jolla to Poway and after a very picky research I have decided to hire Dominant Moving Company for packing and moving of my 3 bedroom townhome. Not just these guys have a great reviews but this moving company was recommended by a real estate broker who was helping us buying a new home. And I still have considered 4 different options, but choose Dominant Moving because of professional approach to my move and very clear and easy to read estimate with no hidden fees. Price was not the lowest one, but was very reasonable. Roman with Dominant Moving was able to give me an accurate estimate for my move by coming over to our house. I did not request for estimate, but he wanted to make sure to assign the right number of people to get it done in one day. He explained that usually packing and moving are done on different day, but they could also do it in one day. I did not have a lot of things to pack but had some very fragile items, which I wanted to outsource to professionals. Their team of 4 packers and movers arrived early in the morning (about 7.30 am and they quickly started packing and loading. By 1 pm, almost everything was boxes, furniture was wrapped with their blankets and shrink wrap. By 3 pm the truck was loaded and by 8pm, all furniture was assembled and arranged and boxes were delivered to room where they belong to. The total price that I paid was $200 less than maximum estimated cost. Great experience and I recommend Dominant Moving Company everyone

The first time I hired Velasquez Movers was to move my family piano. I was nervous due to fact I reside on a third floor, but Hector Velasquez guaranteed his work. The company did such a great job with piano, that within days I re-hired them to move additional furniture. I cannot express in words how happy I am, & owe this to Velasquez Movers!

I sent out a request for a pool table mover to travel to West Hollywood, pick up a table and bring it back to San Diego where it was to be reassembled. Cris responded quickly and was able to do the job for us. The price of the move seemed more than reasonable for the time spent on the road and assembling the table. Cris was precise and detail oriented. He was also very accommodating when I had to reschedule late the evening before. Would highly recommend their services and will call them again when we need any servicing.

We were very happy with our experience hiring Credo Moving. Max was awesome! He took so much care wrapping and protecting all of our furniture. Everything arrived in perfect condition. We had a lot to move and they expertly fit everything into the truck. When we arrived at our new place, they continued to work hard and didn’t slow down even though it was a long day moving all of our things. Max took extra care to make sure that every item was placed in the right room, which is going to save us so much time unpacking and settling in. I would 100% recommend Credo to anyone looking for movers.

I hired Sun City Muscle Movers on 8/1/2017. They were great to work with. Houston which is the owner was actually on the move along with another guy named Daniel. I couldn't believe that the owner was actually at my house assisting with my move. I told him that was very rare. I moved a couple times in the last past years and the owners I dealt with wouldn't give a hand or two nor come out and assist with my previous moves. He knew what he was doing when it came to packing up my house. My husband and I were very happy during and after the move was completed. Thank you, Sun City Muscle Movers. Keep up the great work!

These guys were wonderful and very respectful of my property and myself. My project was moving a large piece of furniture up a tight staircase without incident. They did all of that and more. They took time to do some installation of the feet of the unit and did a great job of that too. I wish I had found these guys weeks earlier when I hire company X and then needed to hire a painter to repair the walls and repaint after their botched job. Please give these brothers a try and you will be as pleased as I am.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
