Hi Everyone! Currently looking for opportunities to help Warwick or other RI communities with their IT needs. Currently I work full time doing Cyber Security and System Administration work for hundreds of organizations all of which love having me around and request me specifically. I’ve been doing computers and all things IT since middle school, doing volunteer work teaching the elderly how to use Microsoft Office and then going into a trade school and college. Often I feel that the small business or home consumer doesn’t have any guidance when it comes to computers or working from home etc. Kids and young adults try to help around the house but mostly to play video games. When I am with a client I listen! IT problems are common and most the time you get people that struggle communicating or look for quick fixes. As an older brother with 5 other siblings I know communication and long term solutions is really the solution to those who want to grow. Let’s help change that :) * I am open to Computer Lessons to parents who struggle with computers or teens who want to explore building and assembling their own. *Printers, Printers, Printers. Dreaded by everyone but crucial ! I can do ink replacements, toner, troubleshooting or setting up new ones. *Local Area Network Troubleshooting * Home WIFI giving your trouble and Cox wireless taking 45 minutes to get you a poor answer. Well I can be your answer and maybe help get you better signal coverage * IOT Connected Devices( Smart TVs, AppleHome Kit, Tlink Kava or Google Home) * Ethernet network cable repair or wiring needed reach out! Depending on the size of the job we can get it fixed for you. * Computer Slowness 😡 Jeez this machine sure runs slow! We can look for software related changes that can improve performance and reliability. Then if any slowness or issue is related to hardware we can replace it! *Computer Consulting: We can advise what computer to get based off your needs. Then once it comes in we can set it up for you with monitors, printers or scanners. * Custom Computer Builds: Do you have a child that wants to play computer games? Depending on what type of games and life they are looking to get out of it we can build the machine piece by piece to get what you’re looking for. This can also be paired with Computer lessons for them also. * Data Retention Procedures: Setup backups for valuable pictures & documents. *Email: We can get you setup with available domains. The part that comes after the ‘@‘ symbol in an email if it is available. We can also make adjustments to existing mail flow, forwarding or license adjustments in Office 365, on premises exchange servers, Google Workplace or your Hosting provider like goDaddy or BlueHost.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

How much does computer repair cost per hour?

It costs an average of $60 per hour for computer repair. Hourly rates range from $45-$50 on the low end and $85-$90 on the high end.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

Choosing Harry Stein to repair my computer was one of the best decisions I've ever made! I discovered Harry approximately three weeks ago after someone from another company had supposedly fixed it which turned out not to be true; forcing me to find another computer technology service person. Upon contacting Thumbtack, I received numerous messages and quotes from computer technicians, including Harry Stein, who, by the way, was one of the very first to contact me. After listening to his voicemail message, I felt quite certain that he was the one I wanted to work on my computer. I got the feeling that he was someone I could trust and that he was very experienced and knowledgeable about all things pertaining to computers. A conversation followed which confirmed my instincts, and I was right! Harry's knowledge, experience, professionalism, and communication skills amazed me! He remotely took control of my computer and started making changes that were effective immediately. He was extremely fast, focused, accurate, thorough, and very detailed. Harry changed settings; added and deleted apps and programs as necessary, and explained reasons for doing so as he went along; educating me more than anyone else ever had. It was an exciting process for me to see all the improvements before my very eyes. As he continued working, my computer got better and better and I was able to get stations and channels that I wasn't able to log into previously. Throughout my years in business I've had several "computer geeks" tend to my computer who I thought were the best, but Harry Stein out-shined them all! I cannot imagine finding anyone who can compare to him! Harry is definitely a computer wizard in all aspects! This review wouldn't be fully complete without mentioning costs and fees, which were another thing that shocked me about my experience with Harry! He quoted me a fee of $75.00 and stuck to it without even a hint of asking for more. He mentioned that he really doesn't do this for the money, but more-so for the joy and gratification he gets from helping people just like me who are frazzled and frustrated with nowhere to turn for assistance. With his qualifications, time spent, fantastic work he did, and the manner in which he performed, he could have justifiably charged several hundred dollars and deserved every bit of it. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the performance of my computer - thanks to Harry Stein! I can only promise you that when you hire him to fix your computer, you'll be very glad you did!

Joel is personable and explains everything in simple terms so that non-techies like myself can understand it. He was able to streamline my computer processes remotely, which meant that I could stay home in my PJs and not drag my big heavy tower to a repair shop. Convenience, reasonable price and lots of good suggestions for how to avoid these problems in the future - that's what I was looking for, and that's exactly what I got. Thank you!
