Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Lucy is truly a gem and a dog whisperer! She is a giving and caring instructor, both with the dog and the dog's person. She instills confidence in both and her knowledge is boundless. Combining her heart with her skills makes her the perfect person to evaluate and train dog and owner. I'm grateful I found her.

Stevo was the only one to respond to my search for "trainers" for my dog who has an extensive biting history. No other trainer would touch or make an attempt to try and work with a dog such as mine. When we spoke on the phone Stevo was very understanding to the situation surrounding me and my cannine companion. A meeting was promptly arranged and he was able to work around my busy un soical work schedule. He spent a great amount of time in out first meeting getting to find out about me and my dog. He then went through some steps to come with a solution to the problems we have been having involving my dogs biting for over a year now. He came woth tools and actually worked with my dog to show me what they do in the training process. He talked me through each and every single action he was doing: what my dog's reaction was, why, the intensity, etc. to make sure that I feel comfortable and that I am part of the training. He is honest and straight to the point. Responds fast, has full of wisdom and knwos his craft well. He truly cares for both the dog and the owners. Unbelievable guy!

We needed some help training our puppy Zoe. Jeanine provided so much useful Information that was helpful. We realized that Zoe didn’t need to be trained but we needed to do the right things so she could understand what we wanted her to do. I would highly recommend Jeanine to hell train your dogs. She knows what she is talking about.

My experience with Lucy and Lady dog was five-star. I loved that as soon as she walked in, we started the “lesson”! It was insane that, the both of my dogs listened to her...right when she came through the door. They don’t even listen to us..lol(after working with her for a couple hours..they are listening way better..). She worked leash training and behavior/aggression with us and our dogs. Very well explained and executed. We even got our aggressive behaved dog to accept another dogs presence..it was amazing and that was the first time since we got her and her buddy, that she became okay with another dog in her proximity! We also did some exercises Lucy recommended during our nightly walk and wow! We have new dogs! Can’t wait for her to come back for more lessons.

Great teacher! Positive and direct. She trained me to be the leader and Daisie to be a happy confident dog. Within one 3 hour session there was no more pulling or dragging. She pottys on command, we power walk. We know how to walk past other dogs and greet without anxiety. There is no more jumping up or barking at gardeners or the door. The hand outs and follow up call a professional bonus. I am continuing with BowWow to work on good dog park etiquette. I reccomend her highly.

In 2 hours, Raquel achieved teaching me how to eliminate 80% of my dogs aberrant behaviors. This was after two other failed attempts with other trainers. I'm having her come again to get me to the next step

Kevin and Latoya are amazing! Not only are they both so personable and kind but they go above and beyond to help you solve the challenges you are facing with your dog. Kevin has a lot of amazing stories and testimonials about the worst dog experiences he has seen and how they have been overcome which always kept us hopeful about our rescue. If you think your dog is a lost cause, take them to Kevin. Just know that it isn't all about the trainer, but the consistency that you must keep up as an owner. Our dog was a rescue and had terrible separation anxiety and nervousness around other dogs to the point that he was tearing down and destroying every screen and window we had if left alone. We did at home training to start and then boarded him and after staying with Kevin and his follow up instruction we can finally enjoy walking our dog and are working with him on the separation but it has improved dramatically. They helped us better understand where it was coming from to truly be able to know how to help too. Thank you Kevin and Latoya for all that you do! Jasper thanks you too!

We had more success after the first training session than I thought possible. Cassidy was able to easily show us how to become a pack leader. Her strategies are simple, easy to follow and are extremely effective. After two sessions I feel like I am establishing a whole new way of communicating with my dog. I appreciate the time and communication she has put forth to help us succeed. Gus is a great dog but he has been tons of work since we rescued him. We feel fortunate and encouraged to have found such a great trainer. I very highly recommend.

We have gone through three sessions already and are very pleased with the progress. Our dog didn't have BIG issues, but getting help on minor things (walks, obedience, etc) has already made a difference in our house. We are so glad we decided to invest in training.

Angela is training my little 14 week old Havanese. Toy breeds are always a challenge and she's done a great job so far. She's patient, knowledgeable and works with me with home work assignments in order to build on the lessons my pooch and I are learning. I would recommend Angela to any new dog owner.

Let me start off by saying that Raquel exceeded all expectations by far and we feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her. We recently adopted a pocket pit bull terrier from the shelter and named her Reina. We have had pretty good success on our own with house training, kennel training, and obedience within our home. The issue is whenever we took Reina outside, we realized we cannot walk past other dogs in the neighborhood. Before Raquel, we hired a trainer and also someone else to 'socialize' her and both failed terribly. After tons of online research, we realized that she has 'fear aggression'. We needed help from a mental standpoint. We desperately needed a 'behavioral specialist'. We needed someone to assess her psychologically so that we know what's going on in her head and more importantly, for us as dog owners to also be trained on how to manage the situation moving forward. That is where Raquel's expertise comes in. Right from the start, you know she is the real deal. Even though we have been trying our best with different techniques, nothing compared to hiring an actual dog whisperer. Raquel will be able to analyze you and your dog, and know exactly where to fill in the cracks of the foundation you have already set. She will teach you how to communicate with your dog with the correct energy you will need in order to set you up for success. Raquel is very patient and super easy to get along with. She will waste no time in your session and tackle the very issue you are having with your dog. On top of all this, Raquel will always be available for help once she knows your case. This alone is priceless and the investment is by far worth it and more. Very knowledgeable and her experience alone should set her apart from so many. We are extremely happy to say that Raquel gave us the confidence and the right tools to finally move in the right direction with rehabilitating Reina's aggression. No more clouding our minds with the internet confusing ourselves and our dog. We would and will, highly recommend Raquel to anyone else who needs special help with their fur baby!!!! :-)
