Outstanding job. Set our appointment & was there on time. Fixed the problem, made it better than it was. Also took time to make a trip to Home Depot. Gabriel also looked at a couple other issues w/no hesitation. Just as important was my wife & new born were asleep. Gabriel and his crew were super sensitive to that. Thank you. Highly recommended

T.J. at House To Home is an expert tradesman. He's highly versed in all things home-improvement, honest, accessible, communicative, and very efficient. We had a dryer vent installed into/out of the wall of our old craftsman home (that had never previously been done) and T.J solved all problems with ease and finesse. Would HIGHLY recommend.

LGO’s work has yet to be finished or re-done. I paid LGO a total of $4,076.95, out of which $3,700 was for labor. I counted the hours on site (my home), and calculated that I paid roughly $264 per hour for approximately 14 hours on site (my home). That’s very far from $59/hour indicated by LGO in their stated fee on Thumbtack. I hired LGO to do several repairs/installations that fit with “handyman work,” which were done July 16 –19 at our home. I notified the owner on July 29 of items that needed to be completed or re-done by the crew, and I also described issues that could have caused harm. On August 9, the owner and I came to an agreement about next steps, but it is now August 19, I have not been contacted by the crew to complete or re-do the work. I share my unsatisfactory experience to be fair both to professionals who give excellent service and also to customers who seek quality work at the stated price. I usually give as positive a review as I can, but I can’t this time, despite my liking the owner and crew, I support independent business, and some of LGO’s work was good enough.

My project was taking out a sink/faucet/disposer set and reinstalling the disposer and new sink and faucet set. The thing that some of the contractors said was that one couldn't install around granite, so I was a bit prepared for damage to my countertop, which was not at all desired. Not a scratch. A few unexpected challenges in that my existing disposer was too big for the piping and the piping required an adjustment, but he had some fittings in truck, so no delay. One of the parts I ordered did not arrive on time so he is coming back to hook that flange up. 1. He was precisely on time and emailed to say how far away he was. 2. Arrived neat and professional with his shoe coverings already on before entering my home 3. knew what he was talking about 4. adapted to surprises 5. most important, got along well with my dog, who supervised the entire project and approved.

Hector made several electrical and plumbing repairs/installations at our home (inside and out), which included rewiring the recessed lights in the ceiling (which were flickering) and related drywall repair as well as repairing a leaking toilet. He also fixed a short in our bathroom light fixture, replaced a sprinkler valve and installed a new shut-off valve on an exterior copper pipe leading to the sprinkler valve. Additionally, Hector kindly offered to replace an electrical outlet and fix loose electrical outlet boxes for only the cost of parts. Hector is respectful and a mild-mannered professional. We have several other home improvement projects in mind and look forward to working with him again in the near future. Honest + Reasonable Prices + Quality Work = Highly Recommended!

As a new home owner I’ve had to deal with many of it’s issues. Our house is old and requires a lot of work (mostly on the outside). First project was our driveway — I met with multiple contractors for estimates and needless to say, it’s gets old quick. I was frustrated with outrageous quotes and turned off by severe unprofessionalism. So by the time these guys came around, I was over it. However, I was impressed right away since they were on time. They even got to my house before I did (oops) - I appreciated their honesty and eagerness. Most of all I liked that they didn’t talk to me as if I didn’t know anything. Then listened me and gave good suggestions instead of just doing what was easy. It’s clear they really care about their work and truly want their customers to be happy. Long story short, the project ended up being bigger than originally planned but I was really pleased with their work and their prices are very fair so I decided to redo the other half of my driveway as well. I’m beyond thrilled with their work. The driveway looks awesome! Neighbors walking by were so impressed that they are now considering redoing their driveways despite it not being high on their to do list!! Hire these guys, they are skilled, honest and extremely hard working!! You will not be disappointed!!!

My experience with Oscar and his team from Xert was nothing short of pleasant. They are hard workers, listen, and willing to work with you and your project needs. My project consisted of finishing the tile floors which I started some time ago, relocating electrical and plumbing from garage to room, installing cabinets, installing a countertop, and installing baseboards and a door threshold. Along with that are the general things - drywall and patching etc. My personal background is in IT and I have an pretty decent exposure to automotive. But, in no way shape or form would I ever attempt to do any of this home stuff. The guys at Exert made home improvements fun as they were explaining what they were doing and why. I know how to find wall studs without the need of a stud finder or any tool now! We ran into a few unknown snags along the way but Xert was able to explain to me the issues and waited for my approval to move forward with the change. The changes implemented to overcome these issues were brilliant - I would have never thought the solutions were as legit as they were. At one point, it took me 2 hours to measure and make sense of what we were working with - i should have done this prior to xert showing up - but oscar knocked out the measurements in a matter of minutes! He explained the whole 5 minutes of measuring the entire way. Not only will Xert get work done for you, they are more than willing to teach you. I had a really good time with Oscar and the Xert team. They are xperts in what they do, knowledgeable, real, and most importantly they put an emphasis on the customer first. Their charges are extremely fair and affordable - if there is anything extra, they will let you know and not hide anything. I am definitely counting on them soon to knock out a few more tasks and have no second thoughts on highly recommending them to family and friends. As for bad reviews, everyone is different and will have different expectations. All homes are different and will have different results and methods to making a project successful. But, its your willingness to stay open and flexible which will make your experience unforgettable. Cheers, Team Exert! You guys have created and extremely happy home and we cant thank you enough!

When we purchased our house 6 months ago, one of our first tasks at the house was to remodel the master bathroom and bedroom. We wanted to replace the existing carpet with a new wood floor, new coat of paint, crown molding and in-wall storage cabinets and in the bathroom, we wanted to basically tear down everything and to rebuild it including the new shower, bathtub, paint, vanity with double sink, new tile all around and new heated floor. We met and interviewed quite a few home improvement contractors and Excel Construction was one of them and our interaction with Eyal placed them at the higher place above the other ones based on their price, design, skills and honesty. We loved the 3D design that he did for us which integrated the summery of all our meetings and it proved that he clearly understood my vision. After we hired Eyal, I can’t write here enough about his level of experience, his capabilities and his quick responsiveness to my calls or emails. The remodeling job took a little less than 4 weeks and all the working people including Eyal were always there, working and checking the work, supervising his team who were top notch and working efficiently. We still love the remodeling job that they did for us and we highly recommend Eyal, the working team and the office staff that were involved in this remodeling. For our next remodeling project, we will definitely call Eyal again. Thank you!!

Debby did an amazing make-over of several rooms in our home - a 400 sq ft sunroom, a living room, converted a spare bedroom into an office, a guest room and, most recently, master bedroom and bathroom. She makes incredible improvements in the use of space and her design ideas and choice of colors and fabric are fresh and interesting. She also comes up with cost-saving ideas to use some of our existing furniture and accessories. She managerd the contractor jobs, ensurinng professional and on-time work. Debby is a joy to work with, and we are absolutely delighted with the transformation she has made to our home.

I needed a lot of work as home had been neglected for several years. Jay came to estimate window installation, and I found he was knowledgeble in all areas of building, updating and code. I found him to be trustsworthy and he never pushed his ideas or asked for more funds than were originally agreed. He works clean and is very personable which helps when you have someone working in your home. I have recommended him to friends and family..their only complaint was they had run out of projects for him.

The Ikea Specialist was exactly that, my kitchen is gorgeous. But what was most comforting was the Specialist patience and professionalism He will be my Ikea guy until the day I die. I was really concerned about the level of difficulty regarding the Ikea product but again the Ikea Specialist is well trained in his craft. As he told me prior to hiring him he said "Your gonna love your Kitchen" and honestly I do. He also made it very clear if there were any adjustments issues or concerns upon completion he would not hesitate to accommodate any problem. Great service and proficient and professional. Just perfect!

I had Rojilio come to my home to provide a quote. He walked everything with me, communicated what I told him to be sure he had the scope covered and provided me a competitive quote. I chose to go with him (even though he wasn’t the lowest) because he was on time to our home, seemed to understand the scope and gave lucrative suggestions. His quality of work and attention to detail was outstanding. He used high quality paint, protected everything and cleaned as he went. If I had my own business, I’d hire him immediate to work for me.

GIM installed a new cool roof by gaf shingles and a solar system for my home. They helped me to pick out the proper shingle color and even tried to match the panels to look good with the new roof. The solar system was top quality American made panels and it came with system monitoring. All the pipes on my wall were painted to match the home. It was great knowing one company took care of all my needs. Give GIM a try if your looking for home improvement needs! Thanks team!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
