Chris was very attentive and informative. He was able to edit and provide me with powerful reasons why I should reword various sentences. I would recommend him wholeheartedly. His work was on time, worth the cost, and his experience in writing is helpful in guiding and supporting anyone new or old in the process. Skip took on a job that was pretty big and what made matters worse, a person that had just neglected the fundamentals of writing. It's not that I don't know them, I was just too lazy to apply them the way they should be. He reminded me of it. I asked him to be brutally honest and he was. The wonderful thing about him, he later pointed out the good things I was doing right and eventually made my confidence skyrocket. The job your asking me to describe is not only Skip helping me with the book I am working on, but him guiding me and restoring my confidence to get me back in the fight after being knocked down by life, people and dare I say editors and publishers. He made me realize putting forth my best effort in a world that is so competitive is just too important to forget. You ask what went well with Skip? Everything, but what stood out the most was his honesty and clarity of various situations and problems. The quality of his work and guidance is excellent and I couldn't ask for any better advisor. Nothing could improve my experience with him, that's how impressed I am with him. Thanks Skip and I look forward to continuing to work with you. Sincerely, Jeffrey L. Ivory

I contacted Dana very last-minute with a big project, and over the weekend he stayed in regular contact with me, scheduled a call, and wrote a press release quickly and expertly. He offered additional services and completed the assignment with time to spare. Incredibly professional, extremely helpful, and I would highly recommend for your work.

Marta did a great job for us. We have a film&TV production company, and we needed to translate a couple of interviews and press notes, and had to be ASAP...she did it fast and perfect. The press note and the interview were released and published in several newspapers, and we could check that nobody changed a single letter. So the documents translated by Marta were perfect to publish in media.

David is an exceptionally gifted artist of the written word whose talents have earned him the respect and praise of his peers. I have known David for 5 years and he has worked with me as an advisor, editor, and friend as I prepared to release my memoir and podcast series. David was the first to offer his assistance when I made my decision to turn my memoir into a podcast. As I built my production team, his opinion that I have a good story made a difference, and others took me seriously. He has the ability to take a complex story and break it down into a finely polished narrative. David’s years of experience as a story analyst bring a level of professionalism for any team fortunate enough to work with him. He is compassionate, caring, and someone I am honored to call my friend.

Erika did a nice job stylizing a press release for my client. In brief, she is dedicated to her job and goes out of her way to communicate and speak directly with the spokesperson for the PR in order to glean information she deems valuable for a release. Erika's greatest gift is her ability to craft an angle for a press release that is likely to garner feedback; she gave us some positive insights and we appreciated her efforts.

As a small niche-publisher of quality books that spark compelling conversations, I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Hank on four book projects. His sharp eyes and sharper wit have added depth, context, and humor to three ESL (English as a Second Language) books on speaking skills. He also made numerous and significant contributions to an American idioms book for English teachers and word mavens. Finally, I hope to one day (soon, please!) to publish a book of conversation and interview tips. Bottomline: Chimayo Press sseeks out opportunities to work with Hank, and only regrets that we lack the financial resources to offer a full time position. Our loss, however, might be your gain if you hire Hank for editing and writing assignments.

I've worked with Nathan on numerous freelance projects, including books, as well as his serving as the editor-in-chief of a site, FourStory, I was a staff writer on for several years. I've always found his edits and suggestions for improving my copy to be spot on and he did not employ a heavy hand. Rather he was clear and concise on what would make a given article or passage by me work better. I recommend his skill highly.

"Howard is an exceptionally hands-on publicist who chooses his clients with care and oversees their publicity in the highest professional manner, thanks to decades of experience. His relations with journalists (print and broadcast) are superb, as he does not do mass mailings or flood their In Boxes with inappropriate releases. He targets them with care, and gets results. I have known Howard for more than three decades, both as a colleague (we were newspaper reporters together) and on the receiving end of his releases and invitations to press events. Howard is a personable guy with integrity, a man who cares about the people he works with, and who does right by them." -- Mark Orwoll, International Editor, Travel + Leisure

I am a singer/musician that is just starting on that path... I've been trying to get the final pieces of the puzzle in order so I can release my first album in September. I've DESPERATELY needed to get my logos made, and time has been running out... I was referred to KGK Design my a friend who had nothing but the most incredible things to say about this company. I had to see for myself... Kyle at KGK is THE BEST graphic designer I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He is amazing at his craft, was able to take my general idea and make something SO unique out of it. He is beyond professional, he is extremely punctual and was able to get ideas to me within a few days, of us meeting... I didn't want to press the urgency of my site needing to be up and my logo done, but he just knew when I told him my single was coming out in August that it needed to be done ASAP... And man, did he DELIVER. He goes above and beyond the call of duty... If anyone needs any kind of design job done, you need to do yourself a favor, and look no further than KGK Design.

I had the privilege of working with Christina when she was a reporter for the Associated Press. Her stories were always crisp, grammatically perfect, and she chose the precise word to describe a situation. She was very patient with the subjects she interviewed. She has a wonderful disposition and it was a pleasure to work with her. Anyone who is fortunate enough to work with her will find that they will get much more than a lesson; they will receive the best preparation from a top professional who has an excellent command of the English language.

Barbara wrote some promotional pieces for my website as well as some press releases for our company. She was wonderful to work with and is very talented. She was very professional and a joy to work with. She also worked with my company in the capacity as a coach and helped us navigate through some challenges we were facing. Yvonne worked with us on retainer/freelance basis for 2 years doing copywriting and social media marketing for our fashion accessories brand. She had creative strategies for reaching Mushmina's target customer and set goals each month. She works in a professional manner and is a talented copywriter. In particular we were impressed with her press releases and also the stories and content she generated for the Mushmina blog.

Bridget did my business press release and did a fabulous job! She took the time to sit with me to learn what I do and what I wanted to convey to my clients. I appreciated the detail and the spin she added to make the words "pop" off the page. I look forward to working with Bridget again on my next Release.

I have worked with Jim on two different occasions. Both times he wrote a biography (for me) to accompany the release of my albums. Not only is Jim a very talented writer he is very professional and easy to talk to, in person and on the phone. He is thorough in his writing, pays attention to details and puts in the time that is required to write a beautiful piece. You can tell from his work he like what he does, which is hard to come by these days!! His past experience in music journalism and in radio...and the fact that he is a true fan of music made him a perfect match for me. I highly recommend working with Jim and will work with him again in the future.

I'm positive Fotini is an excellent lyricist and melody writer. However, she sells herself short by only accentuating these aspects of her skill set in her bio. She is in fact, an excellent overall writer. I hired her for a writing project as I was pressed for time given my travel and business schedule. Within 12 hours, I had a product that was exactly what I was looking for. I was particularly impressed by the initiative she took in researching the subject matter above and beyond the information I provided her. As for her rates, she is EXTREMELY reasonable given her high quality output and commitment to her work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
