My husband and I recently moved into our house in Torrance, CA.. We hired Debby and her company Creative Spaces Interior Design, Inc. to help us make it a home. She got a feel for our likes and dislikes almost immediately. She has a great insight in planning and design. She valued our thoughts and ideas and closely worked with them. She used and incorporated existing furniture, pictures and family heirlooms that were very important to us. She knows how to combine old styles with new modern styles to achieve the perfect desired effect for that "wow" factor that we were looking for. She is very detailed oriented and quite the perfectionist. She turned our home into something we are extremely proud of. It is warm, comfortable and inviting. We would highly recommend Debby to all of our family and friends and would definitely have her come again for future planning and decorating. Debby was a real pleasure to work with, you will not be disappointed.

Working with Cynthia Lee of Madison Design was a pleasure from the beginning to completion of our project. Our home was in desperate need of updates to prepare for listing to sell. The main project scope was to update our original 1953 kitchen and guest bath. With the budget we had allocated we were able to accomplish not only these project but also some minor updates to the master bath and painting of the entire interior of the house. Still within our budget, Cynthia was able to help us to obtain several new items for updating and staging. Ever so thoughtful, once the project had completed Cynthia even showed up to insure the staging of our home was perfect when the Realtor's photographer was here. Cynthia's contractor was very professional, the workers courteous and pleasant to be around as we remained in the home during the process of construction. They cleaned debris and their work areas at the end of every day. I highly recommend Madison Design and Cynthia Lee.

I am a local real estate agent and I have referred Paula Simmons to many of my clients in and around La Canada and the Foothills. She has been instrumental in helping them with kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, and whole-house design and implementation. No matter the size of the project, Paula gets it done professionally, on time and she always goes above and beyond the client's expectations. I have also used her personally and I am proud to recommend her.

Dar was amazing! I highly recommend Dar. His personalized service, his ability to look at our home and customize the decor was second to none. We interviewed many "stagers" and Dar was the only person to look at the "bones" of our house and know how to present the house at its best. If I was to ever need staging again, I would only use Dar -- and I would recommend Dar to any friend looking for a stager. According to my husband, his staging accentuated the best of the house and his staging made the house look better than we imagined -- as a viewer of the home, you didn't necessarily know how great the staging was -- it fit so perfectly with the home. As the owner, we realized that without the staging the home went back to just a house -- Dar got to know the house, and us, and made our home amazing.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Josh on a project for Angeleno magazine where I needed to have condos decorated for an event for a real estate client. Not only did Josh help me do this on a budget, but he embued every single room with inspired creativity that the client and event guests loved. And he was a blast to work with! I look forward to working with him again and unequivocally recommend him.

Patricia, was so enthusiastic with the house and the end product was beautiful. She really cares about how it looks in the end, switching pieces out if she did not like them and this was a vacant home. You get a lot for your money when you use Patrica! I will be using her again and again. Local Real Estate Agent

Karen executed my first garage/estate/tag sale. She did everything and attended to every detail. All I had to do was collect the money(and move a few things around). We got hit by an unexpected rain storm the first day and a lamp fell and hit her in the head giving her a pretty good gash, but none of that stopped her and the sale was a great success! She had great flair, knows what will sell and for how much and is extremely personable even with the most difficult people. She will make it happen for you too!

We have used Robyn Webb for multiple real estate transactions, to buy and sell and she is our Realtor for life. From the beginning we knew we were working with an agent that was a level above everyone we had met in the real estate industry. Robyn takes your real estate purchase seriously, and instead of rushing you into a sale, she is focused on your financial future. She listened carefully to our needs and was very communicative and reliable. We also love that she is an interior designer who called her model “Design To Sell”. She came to the home we wanted to sell and assessed the baseline value. She recommend specific improvements and as we have accepted her recommendations she started the process to schedule of those improvements and design selections. She had a roster of reliable and affordable tradesmen, and because they were used to working with her they give us the best pricing. When the improvements were completed in only few weeks, she staged the home like a model home and we were sorry we didn't engage her sooner to help us with the home design and decorations. Her staging helped us to receive multiple offers on the home we sold. Since we have liked her design ideas we have engaged het to help us design and decorate our new home as well and we love it. Robyn is so focused on client satisfaction – she won’t rest until she knows you are extremely happy!”

As a real estate photographer, I see a lot of staging, much of which looks alike and is very dated. Travis Wayne's style and aesthetic is very contemporary, clean, minimalist and very chic. It's new and fresh and very stylish. It makes a huge difference in how the house feels and presents in my images and naturally, that makes a significant different when you're trying to sell a home. I would definitely recommend Places.

I had the opportunity to see Monika in action when we decided to higher a Home Stager for the sell of our vacant home. She was very knowledgeable, professional and always replied quickly to our calls and e-mails. She has a great eye, good understanding for a client's needs, their time frame as well as budget. After we staged with LA Luxury Home Staging our home got multiple offers and got sold withing the two months period of our staging agreement. I would absolutely recommend Her to anyone who wants to sell their house quick and looking for a real professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
