Evan was WONDERFUL through the whole process & event! He catered at our "Mexican" family reunion at an outdoor park. Food was one of the most important things to get for our reunion and having many good Mexican cooks in the family, Evan came through! There were so many COMPLIMENTS about how GREAT the food was! We had the Mexican Taco Bar with Churros added for dessert. His roasted meats for the tacos were so tasty with the grilled veggies and all the sides and garnishes, and those churros went real fast! Chef Albert, I'm not sure where to start. My experience was absolutely phenomenal. My caterer canceled last minute, and I found Chef Albert here on Thumbtack. He worked within my budget to create a high quality Mexican themed dinner. All of my guests were ranting about how much they loved dinner and appetizers. Albert and his wife are easy going, a good time, and I would work with him 100 times again. If you're looking for a chef for your wedding, he's YOUR GUY. Thank you again, Albert. You were the highlight of the night. PS: Having a Chef that's outgoing and a good time like Albert, your guests with LOVE him.

I had a fantastic experience with Kincy Catering. All of the food dishes were great! The ribs were tender and juicy and had a very good flavor. My wife especially enjoyed the smoked chicken. Kincy also served a delicious macaroni and cheese for one of the side dishes that was a perfect complimant to the meal. One of the biggest selling points to Kincy Catering is the variety of different cuisines they offer, from traditional Soul food to Mexican and Chinese. They simingly can cater to all your request. I highly recommend Kincy Catering and i will defiantly use them in the future.

Basic Catering is much more than catering company, it is a full service event company. Aristotle says "if a man does many things, they cannot do one thing well." That's not the case with Basic Catering. I hired them for a small wedding reception, and I was very impressed with their service. I'll list them as follows: 1. All my guests raved about the food. It was perfectly cooked and the quantity was worth the value. 2. They rent out their own party rentals (tables, silverware, plates, etc.) at a cost cheaper than the competitors. This was significant savings for me with no sacrifice on the quality. This also made clean-up a lot easier. I was not worried about the clean-up, but it did save me on venue costs. (They also do flowers) 3. Lastly, the most impressive aspect of Basic Catering is their professionalism. There will always be something missing or something that goes wrong. Their team is extremely resourceful, from their planners (Ben) to the people executing (Carie) and the waitstaff -- I am a big fan of resourcefulness. They thought of things I missed, and if something was wrong they made it right. They are quick and smart, and know how to get things done. They assisted in making one of the most significant days of my life a wonderful event. Thanks Ben. You did a fantastic job coordinating.

Branden is an absolute rock star. We found him at a catering tasting at the Brazil Room in Berkeley, Ca. Out of all the caterers with their beautiful foods and cakes on display, Branden really stood out. He and is partner were very humble and confident in their back corner booth. But more importantly extremely friendly and eager to help. The food was super good too! So, we hired him for the catering, but we got was MUCH more than that! The food and service the day of the weeding was amazing (people still talk about it to this day). But, what Branden did for the wedding was far beyond the food. He knows his stuff. I believe he said he's been doing this since he was a child. That experience shows. The amount of coordination and poise that he exhibited far above and beyond the call of duty was nothing short of remarkable. His attitude and approach really set our minds at ease allowing us to focus and remain relaxed throughout the whole process. Our wedding definitely wouldn't have been the same without him.

We recently hosted a baby shower at our home. Tea Traditions was easy to work with. We opted for a package that included food and tableware. The tableware and china was beautiful The FOOD was excellent. Although we did order salads that were delicious, the finger food were tasty, easy to eat, and very convenient. It was perfect while munching and opening gifts, sharing tea, and great fun conversation. 5 star service, 5 star help. What a great day. Sorry, dont know why pictures are sideways

The People's Kitchen is very well diversed in the food industry. Everything they made you could taste was made from scratch and with love. Some people working in this industry just do it for the love of money. With The Peoples Kitchen is the opposite they make the food for the love of cooking and pleasing the guests.

Casablanca Bridal Catering recently catered an event for me, and their service and food was far beyond anything I could have imagined. When I was preparing for my wedding, I was able to work with Cher and Derrick to give my general parameters for the type of food and cake that I desired, and they took what I said and pulled off a delectable and crowd pleasing menu, all while managing to stay within my budget. Not having to worry at all about the catering, and everything smoothly progressing from beginning to end, including setup and cleanup, was one of the key reasons my perfect day was so wonderful! I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting a pleasant and fulfilling catering experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
