Roy Alvarez says, "After more than a year with PHP, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you as I transition to my next chapter focused on weightlifting and training for a half marathon.I originally joined PHP for one reason: to rehabilitate a torn rotator cuff. When I started, I had significant loss of range of motion in my right shoulder. Sleeping on that side was painful. Simple movements became frustrating, and I wasnt sure how much function I would ever get back. From day one, the trainers approached my recovery differently than any gym experience Ive had before. Each month they developed two customized one-hour workout sessions done weekly specifically designed to improve range of motion, strength, flexibility, and restore symmetry across both sides of my body. They also provided additional optional workouts if I finished early. When my body did not respond as expected, they adapted and modified exercises based on my actual condition rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all program. At 66 years old and someone who has been working out since high school while playing multiple sports, Im not new to gyms or fitness programs.PHP is unlike any gym Ive experienced. What stood out immediately was the depth of trainer expertise in body physiology, movement mechanics, and kinesiology. Many of the coaches have undergraduate and graduate degrees in kinesiology, and you can see that knowledge directly reflected in the quality of programming and the results members achieve. But expertise alone isnt what makes this place special. What kept me coming back was something that sounds simplebut isnt: the culture.Every workout is met with encouragement, positivity, and genuine attention. Trainers are present, engaged, and invested in helping members succeed regardless of age, ability, or starting point. That positive energy becomes part of the accountability and healing process.Today, more than a year later, I have regained approximately 85% of my shoulder range of motion. I can sleep comfortably again. I can scratch my back. And maybe most importantlyI can throw a ball again with my 10-year-old grandkids. That means more than I can express.A special thank you to Eric Cruz for building something truly unique. What he has created across his gyms is unlike anything Ive experienced in terms of trainer knowledge, member attention, and authentic positivity. PHPs commitment to serving veterans, individuals with disabilities, special needs children, and members ranging from teenagers to people in their 80s says a lot about what this organization stands for.Thank you to Ike Okoroike and Natasha Kasozi for developing my program, listening carefully to my goals and limitations, and continually refining and reinforcing the exercises that helped restore my shoulder function. And thank you to Marc Arjonaan outstanding trainer and kinesiologistwhose rehabilitation-focused, physical therapy-style body work and recovery support accelerated my shoulder and overall recovery throughout the process.I also want to recognize Dr. Betty Lou Deyoung, Doctor of Physical Therapy, for helping me realize that surgery was not necessarily my only path forward for my torn rotator cuff. Her guidance gave me the confidence to commit fully to rehabilitation, trust the process, and invest the consistency and effort required to restore function naturally. Looking back today and seeing the progress Ive made, Im grateful for that perspective and for helping me believe recovery was possible. To everyone at PHP: thank you for helping me regain not just functionbut confidence.Im leaving stronger than when I arrived, grateful for the relationships and lessons along the way, and excited for what comes next.Once part of PHP, always part of the family.See you down the road."See more

Liza R. says, "I am SO happy that I found Heidi! This was my first time working with a trainer, so I didn't really know what to expect, but Heidi was a perfect match! She talked with me and my friend that I was training with extensively about our goals so she had a sound understanding of what we wanted to achieve and she built our work out routines around our goals. It was incrediblyconvenient that she came right to my gym! Also, she made the workouts fun and changed them all the time so we never got bored! Plus, each week, she made them a little bit more challenging, so we were able to really feel the progress that we were making. Every time she came our session FLEW by because she is so fun to be around, and the workouts are a blast! "See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.
