Jasper was on time, responsive, and did an incredibly high quality paint job on our cabinets and even helped us install new handles, knobs, and hinges in a short amount of time. Our kitchen and bathrooms now have a great new 21st century look (updated from its original 80's look and feel). The quote we were given was extremely fair. For the overall experience of this job - the only word that can be used here is indeed 'outstanding'.

Brian assembled a 5-drawer dresser well. He brought his own tools and finished it in a reasonable amount of time. He was a little late, but got in touch to let me know.

Richard Hynes is a very detailed professional. Upon meeting Richard I felt comfortable about the project. We originally wanted to order materials for the project and he had suggested to me that he would order any materials and provide us with the receipts. Luckily we let him order the material as it turns out the ones we wanted to order were undersized for our project. Richard came and seismically retrofitted our home. He also helped us on our kitchen and bathroom remodels while managing the project the whole way, hiring subs, coordinating between myself and subcontractors and achieving the results desired. Richards pricing was 20% cheaper compared to licensed professionals in the area. We are so glad to have had his help, as the previous worker we hired from thumbtack turned out to be unlicensed at a cheaper price, but ended up costing us a lot more money in the long run.

Nicki has been the designer for 2 of our home remodel projects. For our kitchen/dining room/living room she created an open contemporary multi-purpose fabulous space that we love every day! She coordinated with the contractor on all work. For our master bathroom/bedroom and den/2nd bath--again she executed great use of space, color, and design. We loved that she got what our personal tastes and design style was. She created original designs, including custom cabinetry and tile work.

I had two other designers over to help select the right wall color for bedrooms that have two different colored burl veneer furniture that I designed and had made. I've been performing house and furniture design for over thirty-five years and no one, including myself, had a clue as to the perfect room color. Rachel hit the colors right on the mark for the perfect contrast. The rooms are exquisite. Rachel has an amazing talent for knowing what works. I have referred her to my friends who also think she is impressively talented.

At first when my husband and I thought about this renovation we never imagined it turning out this great. We feel a great weight lifted from our shoulders. We did a Kitchen and Bathroom remodel, at the same time, and it couldn't have gone smoother. I truly believe Shmuel treated this remodel as if it was his own house. The demo was done quickly and everyday my house was left clean. Every step I was notified of before, during and after which left me relaxed and happy. Shmuel his Great team and workers completed the job at time!

Regina and team were fantastic consultants on helping me figure out what I wanted/needed to do with a tile project in my bathroom. We ultimately decided to postpone the project, but their on-site consult and email communications were exceptional. I'll definitely hire them for the actual construction once we're ready.

We hired MJH Construction Management to complete renovations of our recently purchased home. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, MJH determined the best solutions to a number of complex repairs and additions including floor leveling, heating, plumbing and electric. MJH helped us choose several improvements like changing the floor plan for better use of space, installing a gas fireplace as well as a bathroom and kitchen upgrade. MJH oversaw the contractors to ensure the work was completed and billed correctly. Throughout the process MJH kept us apprised of the costs and schedule - there were no surprises. We are delighted with the results - our renovated house came out fantastic.

I moved into a tiny apartment in SF without a single piece of furniture. I enlisted Angela's help to make the most out of my small space and was so pleased with the process and the results. She acted quickly by scheduling a call, stopping by my apartment to take measurements and following up with a layout and project scope. We then, worked together to decide on a vision of the space. She sourced pieces, ordered them or in some cases, went to the store to pick them up. She was very hands-on and helpful. Decorating an apartment from scratch can be stressful but Angela remained positive and believed in our vision, which allowed me to do the same. Now my apartment is complete and it feels better than I could have imagined. From a design perspective, it is beautiful but it is also comfortable and functional. I am stoked. The final thing I'd like to share is that working with Angela was actually way more affordable than I thought it could be - she found great deals on furnishing and often received additional designer discounts. Working with her was way easier than doing it alone, the design surpassed what I would have been able to achieve and it turned out to be so affordable. Thanks, Angela!

Had CA Custom Painting and Design refurbish my grandmothers furniture. I had a total of 5 pieces to redo. I thought the price was great for the amount of work and pieces. The furniture was also picked up and dropped off upon completion. Jen also had great communication and was on top of it for scheduling etc. She also had good suggestions on what to do with the furniture (color of furniture and handles etc.). Overall I'm really satisfied and glad I went ahead and did the project.

ISO Ideas designed our new home architecture and interior design in the Bay Area. We loved the modern style and customized details. They were very creative, fun to work with and also helped us to meet our budget. Most importantly they were very responsive and responsible to the last detail during construction. We were very grateful for their services.

David is a caring and enthusiastic man and a delight to work with. He is very efficient and gets the job done quickly. I am grateful to him because, although I am an interior designer and certified color consultant, I do not have expertise in drawing to scale sketches of the spaces I'm hired to design. David helped me by doing those sketches and my clients were impressed. I gave him 4 stars only because some of the sketches needed to be redone because of miscommunication between us. I must admit though that I may have not been thoroughly clear re. measurements. David was always eager to do the best job possible, and I appreciated that immensely. Thank you David. Would hire again.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Normally interior design comes pretty easy for me...until I had a space I couldn't figure out nor deal with. I contacted Forsyth Home Design and Matt came to the rescue. From the first consult to the finished project he was there. Dealing with contractors, color choices, fabrics, and coming up with built in design options. I highly recommend them for ANY interior project that you might have. Thanks Matt!

Very appreciative to Phelan for the color consultation on our condominium's common space refurb (interior and exterior paint & carpet). Can't begin to express how helpful his direction was to achieving consensus across the ownership group. THANKS PHELAN!

I hired Jeff to draw up official plans for our bathroom remodel. The plan was quite detailed and involved knocking down walls and adding windows. Jeff was able to quickly create drawings that would pass the planning department in San Francisco. In fact, he joined me to make sure the plans passed over the counter. The project ended up working out nicely as the plans were clear and my contractor could follow them.

I had Mary mock up a 3D model of a kitchen and bath remodel we did at the start of the year. She was very quick, and the model was exactly what we were looking for to understand what the design would look like, and to pull plans off of. She provided several views and a short video walkthrough of the space in 3D, and then accompanying plans and sections. She also went back and forth with us to edit the model/design to get exactly what we wanted. If I ever do any other work to my house, I will contact her.

OpenBay Design worked with our community nonprofit organization to design a empty storefront space and transform it into gallery. As the storefront was a former tofu store, it had a lot of plumbing and odd fixtures that we thought were challenges to the space. However, they designed a functional and creative space to fit our needs ---to welcome visitors, and serves the dual function of a meeting space/gallery public space. OpenBay researched the furniture, lighting and was able to work very well with the contractor and with our budget. OpenBay has a keen, creative eye and listened to our concerns about how we would utilize the space, and followed through to get the project completed. We are extremely satisfied with the outcome, the process, and would highly recommend OpenBay Designs for future projects.

I found Chelsy both creative and open when she assisted me with a bathroom remodel. She was able to help identify my preferences and ideas, while adding a bit of style that enhanced my vision so it was more aligned with the classic look of homes in our neighborhood. She was a delight to work with!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Since I'm in Daly City, it probably wouldn't be worthwhile to spend more than $100-$200K on renovation. The house needs 2 new baths, a kitchen renovation, and "unification" of style (an added family room makes no sense with respect to the rest of the house), as well as many deferred tasks. A good design that makes architectural sense is more important to me than "high-end" finishes. I would be happy to supply "sweat equity" in the sense of shopping for bargain materials. I like hearts & crafts (the house is a 1939 California bungalow), and would like to include those elements, though not necessarily 100%. I'd like an architect who is a proponent of the Susanka "Not So Big House" philosophy.
