I am not one to leave a ton of reviews for services and I have had mixed success with Thumbtack, but I think this man is an unsung hero!!! My daughter has struggled in math for years, since grammar school, and is now in 8th grade. She continued to struggle with a different tutor. We have been working once a week with Mr. Matlak now for about six weeks and the difference is simply amazing. She just got her first "A" in a math quiz since grammar school and we both nearly cried in relief and joy. The two most important things about him - he KNOWS the concepts cold (some tutors DON'T), and he is PATIENT. I came to the conclusion that my daughter simply would not get the pace of learning or individualized attention in the public school setting that she needs for this particular topic. She is doing well in other topics but math is her Achilles heel. I didn't have the patience (or the knowledge) to help much and it became a source of frustration for both of us. It is such a RELIEF to see her more confident and not stressed about math now!! I can't say enough good things about Mr. Matlak. He promptly answered my inquiries, quickly provided two references who gave glowing reviews, and we are so happy to have him. We didn't want to go the Sylvan or other company routes - Mr. Matlak comes to your home, sits down with your student, and gets to work. I can't believe I did not invest in my child's future earlier in her school career - it is well worth it. We do an hour a week and it has made a VAST difference. I have no relation to Mr. Matlak (other than to sing his praises) and I would be happy to provide anyone interested with additional comments. Update April 22, 2015: Our daughter continues to work with Ray weekly and is now pulling a "B" average, coming up from the "D" average she was pulling when we started. Not struggling and spending so much time on math has allowed her to focus on her other classes and encouraged her to bring her other grades up as well as she prepares to enter high school. We couldn't be more pleased to see our daughter's confidence growing with respect to math. We'll keep him through COLLEGE if he's willing!! All kidding aside, Ray is well worth the investment, even if your budget calls for less frequent tutoring sessions.

Catherine was a great tutor. She was able to quickly summarize the lesson and put it into terms I was able to understand. If I am ever in need of a tutor, I know who to look for.

After I failed college algebra last semester, I was recommended to Ryan for tutoring by my previous professor. I explained to Ryan it’s been a while since I took math and I was lacked understanding in certain math fundamentals. He was very caring about my situation and reassured me that my lack of knowledge wasn’t anything to be worried about. He gave me plenty of tips on how to solve problems and how to remember the steps associated with solving certain functions. He Was really entertaining in how he assisted with the work and was It’s down a single he astoundingly better at going over the work than my previous professor. Because of Ryan I passed my college algebra with a B, which compare to the F I got previously is much better. I’d highly recommend Ryan as a math tutor to anyone who is struggling with understanding math.

Let me start this review off by saying, Ashley is amazing!! Ashley tutored me via telecommute in my Calculus II and Statistics courses. Telecommute tutoring was a first for me, but it was way more convenient and worked great with my hectic schedule! My Calc professor had an extremely strong Vietnamese accent which made lecture a complete waste of my time. I completely relied on Ash to teach me the course material. She has immaculate handwriting and worked out all the problems step-by-step, then emailed me the solutions. All the steps were easy to follow and helped me a number of times when I was stuck and very frustrated. Ashley was always available to explain a step if I had any issues and her explanations made all the difference. I am a 4.0 student who works hard, I graduated from my local Community College and, (with Ashley’s tutoring assistance) I successfully transferred to UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business which was my 1st choice of Universities. The rates were affordable and she worked with me to fit my budget. If you are struggling with mathematics of any kind do yourself a favor and retain her services, Ashley is worth her weight in gold. I will definitely hire her again!

I have observed Mr. Wolsey as an extremely successful teacher of all ages. As a middle school teacher, he was a favorite of students, but more importantly they learned from him. Now he is a teacher of teachers. Mr. Wolsey embraced technology as it became more and more important every year. He has successfully integrated technology with literacy in all phases of teaching and learning. He is in demand as an author and is published in many books and other publications. His knowledge of technology and its uses in both the academic and business setting is considerable. I find Mr. Wolsey to be an authentic teacher, a moral and ethical man who holds to high standards. Anyone working with him or learning from him is a fortunate individual indeed.

Jared has been tutoring my son for several months. I knew right away that he would be a good fit for my son and his tutoring needs. Jared is professional, responsive to communication, and willing to be flexible with our schedule. He is skilled at giving my son different strategies for school success and my son's grades have risen over the course of the time that he has worked with Jared. My son always looks forward to tutoring sessions and I am thankful that my son is working with such a strong, positive role model who seems genuinely interested in helping.

To whom it may concern, Annette Thomas was my tutor for two years while I attended Mt San Jacinto College. I needed some help with two courses, Math and English. During my time with Annette she helped me to be able to place my thoughts on to paper, as I struggled with this during schooling. Annette’s caring and thoughtful process with me gave me the confidence I needed to learn and understand the material better in my classes. This new confidence that she helped me gain gave me the opportunity to graduate with Phi Data Kappa with Honors. Annette is a great listener and she helps you with finding your inner confidence which gives you the tools you need to be successful. Regards, Tracy Sambol

Amy worked with my son last year when he was nine, tutoring him with reading. At the time he was a reluctant reader, and home schooled, so I wasn't sure how receptive he would be the idea of working with someone (even as sweet and non-threatening as Amy is!). He ended up really enjoying working with her and shared many of the creative activities they did together. I was impressed! It is clear that Amy has a passion for teaching and a natural ability to engage those she works with. She brings a ton of creativity to the table, which I think is an invaluable asset in working with kids. I highly recommend her!

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

            • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
            • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
            • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
            • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
            • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
            • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
