Javier did a wonderful job installing a kitchen faucet and garbage disposal. He came right on time and did everything we asked. We were on a bit of a "budget" so we were happy to get the job done at a very fair price, which was much more affordable than some of the bigger companies charge. I only spoke to Javier over the phone (my wife was present) but he was extremely polite and explained everything for us. We've never had a "regular" plumber but Javier is now our guy!

Just wanted to say thank you again for all the work done on our kitchen! Frank is well considerate of my opinions and designs. He give honest and practical advises. We added more tasks moving forward and he was great to help us out. Franks personality is great, easy to talk to. He pays attention to detail especially the flooring. Clean up after every visit. He is considerate of my children (3 little ones). Addressed all my concerns. Pricing is great! Timeline took a little longer then expected for me, but finished within the estimate time. They did come for short periods of time within the day. Overall, everything turned out perfect, Much satisfied with the work done! Thank you again.

My husband and I chose Exclusive Designs to do a small remodel on our kitchen. We just purchased our first home in August and the kitchen was the original from 1989. We wanted to keep the existing cabinet boxes, repaint them, and add new cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Greg was happy to work with us on our budget and was able to provide us custom painted cabinet and door fronts. We chose to go with a white shaker style door with gunmetal knobs. We absolutely loved working with Greg and his team. Greg was so easy to get ahold of with any questions I had. He answered our questions and also included his recommendations when I couldn't decide on certain aspects of our kitchen. Each person we met from Exclusive Designs was professional, on time, and extremely kind. We were not able to be home while the painting and renovation was being done and we felt extremely comfortable leaving Greg and his team in our house and when we returned, the house was always spotless. We are so incredibly happy with our new kitchen and have received numerous compliments. We would chose Exclusive Designs over and over again and can't wait to work with them on projects in the future!

Julio with J & M Precision Construction was great to work with. He took my vision of how I wanted my kitchen remodeled and made it a reality. He was responsive and communicative every step of the way on what will be done each day and kept us on scheduled even after I changed my mind on some of materials I wanted to use. In the midst of the kitchen remodel I added my fireplace to be done as well and Julio still completed the job on time (8 weeks). He also installed new floors throughout the house. I was also grateful that he cleaned up every time he was finished for the day and made sure he took the trash away daily. I greatly appreciated Myra as well, she helped with some of my decision making and helped clean the house especially the floors. I took the pictures in the evening so some maybe too dark. I would highly recommend Julio with J & M Precision Construction.

Jim exceeded my expectations with my media niche. Besides it coming out absolutely gorgeous, Jim made sure it was functional sound. He included a dimmer switch, a back door panel for access to my outlets, automatic closing doors, and a device to make sure I had remote control access. He worked with me on the farmhouse design and got me beautiful shiplap and x style doors. Jim was also reasonably priced. His work is well worth the wait! Jim thank you, I love our new unit!

My experience working with Fred and his team was absolutely fantastic! My husband and I spent months picking out our cabinets and designing our kitchen and Fred, through his knowledge and skills was able to bring all of the designs on paper to life! He did such a good job and his attention to detail did not go unoticed. I have many family and friends who are in the construction business and were absolutely amazed at the craftsmanship and overall work Fred did in our home. I would recommend the cabinet guy to all of my friends and family and I would be 110% confident in that referral. Thank you!!!

Steve showed up on time, did exactly what he promised, did excellent work, finished on time and on budget and left my kitchen cleaner than it was when he got there. I highly recommend him and his assistant. Courteous, polite, respectful, understanding , insightful and (very important) willing to consult with you and offer his learned opinion while having an amazing ability to understand and listen to what is important to you, the homeowner. There are not enough stars to rate him and the quality of his craftmanship.

I came in with no idea of what to expect to budget. They came out and measured my kitchen. I went back to the store to discuss options. They didn’t make me feel like a lookee Lou. I have found most of the cabinet shops don’t like to talk to a woman they expect the husband to make the decision. The job went so well for my kitchen I decided to do the bedroom closet on my next project.

Mark Nichols is a highly-regarded interior designer located in the epicenter of modernism, Palm Springs, California. He is committed creating refined contemporary interiors, appropriate for the home's architecture and the surrounding natural environment. While many of Mark's designs are less decorative and more architectural, his artistic use of color and texture creates warmth, sophistication, and comfortable live-ability. After receiving his interior design training at UCLA, and following a brief stint as a project manager at a large residential firm, Mark established his own company. Soon, his designs were being published in several of the foremost interior design magazines, including Metropolitan Home, California Home and Design, Palms Springs Life, and LA Times West Magazine. His designs were also featured on HGTV, where he was named one of America's top 10 designers. Metropolitan Home magazine named Mark as one of Generation Next: America's Designers to Watch, calling him, one of the newest nationally emerging interior designers for his modern designs and his abiding commitment to the environment. This interest in sustainability and modernism had inspired Mark to move to the desert in 2003, after experiencing a revelation at a recently refurbished William Cody hotel. Since then, he has been committed to a thoughtful selection of materials to minimize impact and maximize style and functionality. Creating spaces that are ecologically responsible, sophisticated, and contemporary on-time and on the budget are key elements in all of Mark's designs. To that end, he has earned the highest accreditation from the US Green Building Council in sustainable building practices: LEED AP ID+C, and has served as the chair of the Palm Springs Sustainability Commission. Mark finds pleasure not just in the creative aspect of his work, but also in the client relationship and project management of each new design project. Maintaining constant communication with his clients, and ensuring that they feel comfortable with the process is of the utmost importance to Mark, who feels the integrity of his word is the most important tool he has in his kit. Whether you have a residential, multi-unit or commercial design project, Mark would be delighted to create space for you that is environmentally responsible, sophisticated and modern.

I love what I do, and I have been involved in interior design my entire life in one way or another. I specialize in re-arranging my clients existing furnishings to create new and beautiful surroundings. I also do staging for my clients involved in home sales. I love working with colors to bring rooms to life as a paint color consultant for both interiors and exteriors. Choosing colors can be baffling, so let an expert save you time and money, and you'll love the results! Let me share my passion with you and create rooms you didn't know were there.

Our work always stands the test of time through quality craftmanship, and a style that is ageless. We are most satisfied when we know that we have done exactly what our client wants. Seeing a clinet happy not only with the end result, but with the entire design process brings us a great feeling of professional success and pride.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
