Our daughter has had only 2 lessons at the moment. The first was a very informative diagnostic test. So far we are very pleased with John and our daughter feels she is already improving.

We hired Calvin to help our 16 year old daughter with Pre-Calc. He was professional and responsive to our concerns and needs. He was proactive in that he reviewed the text book lessons she was on prior to her sessions. He never cancelled on us. Our daughter really liked the one on one time to get back on track. She liked that he showed and explained what to do and how to do it instead of reading the instructions to her. We would use his services again. Her grade went up.

John Bertinetti helped me study for the GMAT exam over the summer of 2017 with concentrated sessions to review GMAT Quant. John got me started on a study path by sharing info about the best study resources for my problem areas, and would meet with me once or twice a week to go over key Quant problems that I needed help solving. John is an ideal tutor for students who are good at keeping themselves on track without a structured curriculum. Great value, flexible scheduling, and clear explanations of problems are all huge wins with him. About halfway through the summer, I realized that I needed a structured class and more discipline to keep myself on schedule, so I supplemented my study sessions with John with an independent online class with a live teacher. Key lessons w/John: John is all about understanding the concepts behind a problem before sharing tricks; his method is great for learners like me who need to understand the math conceptually and don't want to just memorize formulas. We did a lot of work on combinatorics and probability, which were my challenge areas. He was a great and affordable supplemental resource for me beyond the class. Results: I went from a 580 on my Manhattan GMAT diagnostic to a 730 score on the actual GMAT after 3 months of light study followed by 2 months of intense study.

I am amazed as to the quality of tutoring I received from Arbor Tutors given the low price. The tutor my daughter had was very sweet and very patient with geometry. You can't ask for a better tutor than the one we got. We chose to do the online tutoring. Five stars all the way.

My experience with One to One Tutoring and with Tim Gasser has been nothing but excellent. He tutored my son in both 9th and 10th grades for Geometry, Algebra and Chemistry. Since my son was taking honors level courses, the curriculum was quite intense and fast -paced, but Tim seemed extremely familiar with the curriculum and was able to help and support him exactly in the way he needed. He obviously has the knowledge and the experience needed to guide students in high school, especially the ones who are in advanced tracks and AP courses. Tim's punctuality and professionalism are commendable, but what struck us most was the way he personalized the content and his teaching methods to serve my son's specific needs. My son will continue to work with him this year. I can recommend One to One Tutoring without reservation to any parent whose kid needs that little extra help in high school.

MathExpert is always consistent with answering the questions and making sure that the material is understood. He teaches the importance of neatness when solving problems and that is not about how quickly you learn a subject but how much you've learned. He approaches the lessons very pragmatically; helps to connect theory to the practical aspects of execution so that you are actually learning the 'why' behind the work. A big /welcoming smile, patience and professionalism.

Dave is extremely knowledgeable. Gives great feedback on my progress. Corrects me where I need the attention. I am satisfied with my decision to take up private lessons. These lessons have brought me to a level where I will be able to keep up with instruction once my class at DVC begins in August.

Back in 2011, Michael was recommended to us by my sister who enlisted his help to tutor her son who attended Head Royce High School. She said he was excellent and could tutor on any math or science subjects. Because I had a special needs child, I asked if he would allow me to sit in on a couple sessions with my son and he obliged. I was immediately taken by how meticulous, patient, and tuned in he was to what the student needed. With his help, our son did great in Algebra II and Geometry. We then sent our daughter to Michael for Biology, Algebra II, Geometry, and Honors Chemistry. Due to her fondness for math and hope to be competitive when applying for a computer science major at a good college, she felt she needed to accelerate her math curriculum. Therefore, over the summer between her sophomore and junior years at Piedmont High School, she was able to accelerate her math level by a year by taking Pre-Calculus at a community college while being guided by Michael's expert tutoring skills. He is now tutoring her in AP Calculus AB and Honors Physics. Michael has helped our daughter gain mastery in all these subjects and get the highest grades possible in these subjects. Both my children have found Michael funny, helpful, friendly, extremely smart, gentle, encouraging, gives relevant additional work if he finds they needed more help in a certain area, and a pleasure to work with. In addition, I have recommended Michael to nearly a dozen friends that have asked me if I know of a good tutor and they have all been very pleased. We feel very fortunate that someone with such incredible expertise in so many subject areas lives only 5 minutes from our home.

I speak 3 languages, e.g., English, French and Arabic. I offer private French lessons. I am assisting kids on their homework.

I can give lessons of reading, writing, and talking in Spanish, mostly for beginners, but I'm fluent; I can also help other levels because I lived most of my life in Colombia. The price per hour is $17, but I can fix it depending on where it is and on how many hours.

I was born and raised in a Spanish speaking country. I have lived and studied in the US. In my classes of full immersion, a conversational method is emphasized, as well as grammar explanations, only the necessary followed by the practice of the important points illustrated. I am a well-seasoned instructor with experience in prestigious universities, government agencies, and private academies such as Inlingua, AVL, University of Miami, Barry University, and DLI. I also offer Spanish and ESL private tutoring.

I am a retired university professor, a Ph. D by qualification. I specialize in a branch of algebra called Ring Theory. I am willing to teach any topic in mathematics to school children, and any topic in calculus and algebra to undergraduates.

I've worked in Arthur Murray Dance Academy for 2 years, competed and performed many times, and I really enjoy teaching. Music has been a passion of my family through the years, and it's part of my culture.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.
