He responded via text right away and came and fix our door that was not closing, he fixed bathroom tiles as well. Very professional and nice. He cared about the quality, like he chose to put wood instead of cement as he knew cement would come out fast. I can trust him. Prices were very fair.

I've literally communicated with or contacted at least five contractors over the past two months to complete this flooring job. Salinas was an answer to prayer! Whereas other sites or contractors told me to wait and/or never got back to me or took others jobs, Vyron responded promptly within an hour when I posted the job on Thumbtack. Vyron and Pablo did excellent work putting down a new subfloor and plywood, then installing an LVP (see photos) and a new toilet (not pictured). Vyron communicated about every step of repair and installation and about every purchase for the job. He takes pride in his work and left the work area clean. I'm so glad that the job is finished and that it was done well.

I'm new in town and found Dennis on Thumbtack. He is amazing!! I've worked in the flooring business for years, so I knew what to look for! He is a top of the line professional. Came out for a small 12x12 office carpet job and was finished in 3 hours! Very detail oriented. Works hard till job is complete. Now I will have him quote a larger commercial vinyl job. He truly is the BEST in the business!

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

I found Alfonso's Carpet service through Thumbtack and they were very responsive with my questions. they came out to my house to show samples and provide different options. what i really appreciated that they did was to provide separate quotes for the different types of flooring that i was contemplating, as i was still undecided on what i wanted to move forward with. i had expressed to them that i wanted to get the flooring done ASAP since the house was empty and new furniture was going to be delivered on a specific day. they were able to get the carpet and flooring ordered, delivered and installed with a couple days to spare before my furniture was delivered! i was very pleased with the outcome, the colors selected and the overall service provided!

I needed to replace over 800 square feet of old vinyl flooring in my house. I was looking for a contractor that would assume the responsibility for the whole job including fixing any problems that were found. Fortunately a friend recommended Mr. Thayer. He and his crew did an excellent job installing my new flooring. During the installation a small water leak was found in my hallway. Mr. Thayer found a leak detective who located the leak and my pumper fixed the leaking faucet. I am very pleased with the installation and Mr. Thayer’s efforts in fixing the problem. I highly recommend Fred Thayer Carpets for flooring installations to my friends and acquaintances.

I originally hired David to remove some base boards and flooring. It turned out to be more difficult than we both thought. He did an excellent job removing and replacing the base boards and flooring. While he was here I asked him to do a few small projects. He was really cool about that and only added a little more to the original bid. His workmanship on all the projects was excellent. David was flexible, professional and communicative. I would highly recommend him.

Rafael just completed our dishwasher installation. He cut the existing cabinet and installed the dishwasher. He also made a filler piece to fill the gap between the dishwasher and cabinet. He is very friendly and professional. He is also careful not to damage the hardwood floors. He works very efficient. He also cleans (e.g. dust) while he is working. We hired him to work on other parts of our home after seeing the results of dishwasher installation.

Luxor Floors is an overall A+. Once I submitted my project on Thumbtack Luxor Floors reached out to me. Patrick was a pleasure to work with. He came out and was very honest about our floor planning and what he recommended and what would be a waste of money. The type of carpet he suggested for us wasn't your basic type of carpet. Luxor saved us a significant amount of money compared to our first quote by one of the radio advertised retail stores. Once our carpet was delivered Patrick had set up an appointment for installation that weekend. He worked around our schedule to insure we didn't have to miss work. Antonio was the gentleman who removed and installed our carpet and was a pleasure as well. Very respectful and hardworking. All in all I would recommend Luxor flooring to anyone that is looking to upgrade the flooring in the home.

Eduardo and his partner did a fantastic job of installing new entry doors. Eduardo gave us a very competitive estimate and was easy and flexible to work with. The doors were unique and required a bit of problem solving; they demonstrated skill and team work that allowed for a smooth and efficient installation. We’re so pleased with the work that we’re bringing them back to complete our entryway project with the installation of new tile and molding. Looking forward to working with them again!!

Farrell refinished the wood floors of our 1910 Berkeley, CA craftsman in the summer of 2015. He gave us an excellent and very reasonable bid and stuck to it. He also agreed to refinish the floors in two sessions so we could keep furniture in the house and move it around, saving us hundreds of dollars in potential moving fees! Farrell is a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor. He works fast, efficiently, and cleaned up thoroughly each day. I very enthusiastically recommend him for floor refinishing. Our floors are stunning!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
