"It was a pleasure working with Anthony. He was on point from his emails to the diet and the workout regiment. It was wonderful waking up knowing that it wasn't like boot camp, but rather an exercise session that kicked your butt and made you feel good. He never pushed us too hard, but gave us enough motivation to drive us through each set. It was a great monetary deal we worked out for our "honeymoon body", but wished the price was more reasonable so we could continue as something that was a part of our lives. It was a real treat seeing familiar faces and waking up to the morning routine! We highly recommend Anthony and God's Gym."

"I have been training with Evan for a little over a month-3 times a week for weight loss. On my first weigh-in I lost 8 pounds and inches in various parts of my body! He is AWESOME!!! the sessions are never dull and he keeps me motivated. He has a great disposition- easygoing and friendly. Since I have back issues, he is very cautious and will modify the exercises so that I still get the same benefits. I'm doing exercises I thought I could never do! I initially signed up with Evan for 30 sessions but because he is exceptionally outstanding I have decided to sign up for another 30 sessions. I am very confident that with Evan I will reach my desired weight goal and in addition I will have a stronger core and better coordination. Each training session is unique so I never feel bored. I looked forward to each session because when I finish I feel energized and exhilarated!! "

"What would I do without Gretchen?! She has been a true partner on my weight loss journey. I started with a plan to see her for 10 sessions, but she’s so great that I’ve lost count of how many sessions we have had. My new plan is to work with her indefinitely. She’s incredibly kind, non-judgmental, and knows exactly how to customize workouts to get results. I feel stronger every week, and am continuing to lose weight at a steady pace. She’s completely changed how I feel about exercise!"

"Best decision I ever made, He helped me and gave me tips on how I can improve on so many things both mentally and physically and he respects and listens to his clients, it's amazing because after all our trainings, now i can do them on my own without being afraid to fail. I went to xavier to get stronger but at the end it was more than that, I'm forever gonna appreciate his advice and everything he helped me with. In just a month I can see the results already, my 1.5miles run time went from 12.30 to 10.55mins and now I can do push-ups and pull ups and plz I used to be scared to do sit-ups because I was afraid of failure but not anymore thanks to xavier. And I can honestly say I'm more ready for Marine corps boot camp than I was a few months ago. And lastly thank u for giving me the best advice ( Don't be afraid to fail)."

"John taught me how to live a healthy lifestyle, workout, and most importantly how to keep weight off! When I met John I weighed 210 pounds and was not happy with how I looked. I'm now down to 155 and feel great. I owe John for most of my success. Listen to what John has to say and have an open mind and you will be losing pounds in no time!"

"Gerard will work you and with time you will see results if you put your part in. I've only done a few sessions but I can already see my body changing. I'm excited to see what else he has for me. He has a great personality which makes these sessions that much more fun . I love the workouts he gives me. They aren't easy but who said working out was going to be easy. You will be sweating within minutes. He also has his own gym in San Rafael and also where he lives which makes meeting up easier if you can't make it to San Rafael. He also offers boot camp classes which I also like. It works your abdominals, glutes, legs arms and overall core which is exactly what I need for weight loss. I recommend Gerard P at Evolutionary Fitness if you want to get into shape, achieve weight loss and create a whole new healthy lifestyle. "

"I was looking for a trainer to work with me occasionally to create workouts I could do on my own at my gym. My goal was to do those workouts for 3-4 weeks and then circle back with the trainer to learn more exercises. And Aaron delivered! He listened to what I wanted, and during our first session, he took time to learn my workout habits and assess my fitness level. The workout he created was perfect for me. I'm so excited to continue working with him! (And his gym space is great!)"

"Ben is the best!!! I’ve always hated exercise and PE class was literally a total nightmare. I’ve never really been super out of shape or anything but I was gaining weight and thought it was time to find help. I actually requested female trainers only because I felt like I would be more comfortable with another girl and I didn’t want to gain that much muscle, but we talked on the phone and he offered me a free consultation soo I figured why not? I’m super happy I tried it out because I’ve learned so much in the last few days about training and for the first time in my LIFE I’ve been looking forward to going to the gym. He’s always encouraging but not annoyingly positive all the time and really cares about seeing me progress. I honestly thought working with a trainer was gonna be like bootcamp but he’s always understanding and doesn’t make me do things I’m uncomfortable with. (I basically always end up doing them anyways because if I don’t try hard enough he’ll silently judge me lol) I almost went with a trainer at another gym that wanted to charge me literally double what Ben charges until I saw how ridiculously crowded the place was. For half as much I get to train in a private gym and I’m seeing muscle definition for the first time!! Definitely recommend over other overpriced trainers, he’s super chill but very professional."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
