Michelle is a warm and inviting person who made me feel comfortable very quickly. She has been a great mentor and helped me overcome many obstacles in the aftermath of a serious life event I experienced. I felt I could be me without any concern for fear of how she may react. I have done traditional therapy but have preferred her holistic approach to combining therapy with a goal oriented approach to solving problems one may be experiencing. I have been able to get to a much better place in my life thanks to her support and the perspective she helps me obtain through self reflection. She encourages you just enough to help you push past your self-set limits without ever feeling like she is pushing you past your boundaries. Somehow, I always get to the realization I need on my own terms but with the help of her encouragement. I love her approach and feel that her respectful manner along with her warm, understanding attitude creates a space for one to really get down to one's core and find one's self in the process. She has truly been a gift to my life.

I would recommend Cristi! I was skeptical about starting therapy, but Cristi made me feel comfortable the moment I walked in her office. She listened to my issues without being judgmental and she offered several suggestions on ways I can work to improve things. She also made me laugh and I never thought that would happen in therapy! I feel like I can trust Cristi and I plan to keep working with her.

My therapist, Paul Rieker, has made a tremendous difference in my life! After only three (2 hour sessions) he was able to help me unlock the issues and move forward into a fulfilling, productive life that is now void of fears and insecurities. He is very honest and genuinely cares for his partients. He is more concerned about helping others than racking up expensive therapy sessions. He is very affordable and I definitely recommend him.

I am very happy with the services that I received from Dr. Murray S. Kaufman. The first time that I visited him I literally was a mess. I was dealing with IBS, and the condition was killing me because I didn't know how to live with it. I went to see Dr. Kaufman with the intention to receive a hypnosis protocol for IBS. I started the protocol; however, the doctor realized that I was suffering from anxiety disorder that was making the IBS flare up, and I started a therapy to work on that. Dr. Kaufman helped me to find the roots of my anxiety and how to deal with them. Every session was very productive, and I learned a lot about myself and dealing with my conditions. Now, I am in a much better place in life, and so thankful to Dr. Kaufman, because he helped me to overcome one of the darkest moments of my life. He is very knowledgeable, dedicated and professional. I recommend him from my heart to yours.

Ok, seriously. For real, you guys. For serious, now. Gosia is one of the MOST gifted, MOST talented clearers of illusory energy I have EVER had the pleasure of working with. She is not only a pleasure and a delight to be around, but her work is FAST, DEEP, STRONG and FUN!! I left a session with her two nights ago feeling lighter than I've EVER felt in my LIFE. And I've been working and digging and studying for 30 YEARS. I know I sound like I'm falsely gushing here, but I'm TELLING you, why this woman isn't internationally renowned for her work yet, is beyond me. I'm thrilled to encourage you to GET WITH GOSIA... TODAY, my loves. Today. (She's so good. Did I mention that?) Love and light and ponies, Katie

I came to Oliver at Verbal Ninja ahead of a big speech that had career and even life changing potential. I was speaking to a large group of fellow doctors, several of whom were what you might call “celebrity doctors.” Frankly, I wanted to upstage them. I myself have an acting background but have always had a lot of stage fright for public speaking. I worked with Oliver over the month leading up to the big event. I knew what I wanted to say, just not quite how to say it. He made my words sound like nothing I’ve ever heard before—yes, that good. Yet it still sounded like me…I felt comfortable and spontaneous. He sort of gave me the voice that I always thought I had inside, if that makes any sense. He also coached my delivery, voice, gestures, movement, eye contact, etc. etc. His tricks to conquer stage fright—especially the psychological aspect—are brilliant. The result? I think I killed it that night. Even my billionaire friend who came to see me said I spoke better than a lot of people he sees that speak on a regular basis. Even the owner of the company had this to say: “Thanks for everything, the event was great and we were very happy that you gave that speech, it was amazing! Not only the way you presented (like an actor) but also the content was very emotional, some tears were shed from Melissa.“ People came up to me afterwards and shared how I changed their view on aesthetics and really motivated them. All the “famous doctors” who spoke alongside me on the panel were super impressed as well. In short, Oliver came to me highly recommended. He leaves me even more highly recommended. If the stakes are high, he’s the guy.

I highly recommend Miss Briscoe to anyone seeking a good hypnotherapist! I only went in for a single session of self-discovery, but came out so much more enlightened and at peace with myself. Miss Briscoe is incredibly professional and works hard before, during, and after the actual trance to ensure that you benefit as much as possible from your therapy, and she truly cares about her clients. Whether you go in once like I did for a single self-discovery session or continually for a chronic problem, you will not regret choosing Miss Briscoe.

"I have tried different types of therapy in the past. I was referred by someone with bi-polar to this type of therapy. It had helped her so I tried it. Of all the different types of therapy I have been to, this by far is the one that has helped where even my family has noticed the difference. I like it because it literally reprograms your mind from negative thinking to positive thinking. You don't have to talk a lot or go into all this detail and relive your traumatic experiences. It is different based on your "traditional" types of therapy but it really works. I would recommend this to anyone." -Mrs. A.R.L., Mortgage Consultant

I am a certified yoga therapist Rx and a certified level III reconnective healing practitioner. I am trained in the comprehensive yoga therapy program from Loyola Marymount University. In yoga therapy, we are trained to work with many different diagnosis. For instance, some of my clients have various types of cancer, peripheral neuropathy, low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, prenatal, postpartum and so on. We have been trained to approach the diagnosis in a holistic mind-body-spirit approach. We will work on healing your heart from the inside out. We will also work on the alignment and understanding the physics of your body. Quantum physics has proved that science and spirit are simply two different sides of the same coin, and that observation changes the outcome. The reconnective healing work is a separate modality I use to accomplish our holistic goals. It is new, effective, different and potent. It is truly something to experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
