Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Renan was an excellent mover! I used his services to unload a moving van and he arrived for the job early, showed care/kindness to me + my things, and even helped us secure the truck for the next move. I would highly recommend Renan and use him again.

Tony and his team were very responsive from the start of my move coordination. They arrived perfectly on time and completed the move within estimation. They wrapped all of the furniture to prevent damage and to move each item efficiently with speed without worries of scratching anything. Most importantly, they adhered to the CDC guidelines and kept their masks on the entire project. I highly recommend Friend’s Moving Services. I am confident you will be pleased and satisfied with their service.

They were fantastic in helping us move a huge oversized wine fridge, piano and chandelier from the Peninsula up to Sonoma County. We had other movers in the past that were not nearly as conscientious, resulting in a stained sofa and damaged chair. They not only were great professionals but also had the best prices. I will use this team again for my moving needs.

Couldn't be happier with their service! It only took two guys to move all of the heavy furniture we were dreading moving ourselves. Quick, friendly, and absolutely nothing was damaged - despite them having to maneuver stairs and tight corners. Will definitely hire again.

Rick scheduled our hot tub move quickly, and moved a 450 pound monster from our driveway down / slope the equivalent of about 60 stairs to install it on the pad in the back of the house. It all worked out ok although he had to move it on the side of the house without stairs, due to a gate limitation. So he made his own path and got the job done, working on a steep slope with less than ideal conditions. Amazing effort and great attitude. He even volunteered to drop the packaging waste off at the dump. Grateful for the help. Thank you, Rick and team!

It was great working with Leclair Moving, they were so flexible with me. I couldn't decide on a date to move and I kept going back and worth but Pavel was really patient. We finally decided on a date and they worked so fast it was unbelievable. They packed up everything in an hour and were done unpacking at our new house in record time. Very impressed. Will definitely recommend them!

Best movers I've ever worked with. Great care taken. On-time. Great attitude throughout, even though there were some heavy items to move up and down stairs. Flexible. Careful. Does best to keep your effort to a minimum, even if you want to help. Honest. Trustworthy. And great pricing. All businesses should be so professional and set such a great standard.

Great company. Tony was the best person to deal with. He answered all of my questions; him and his team were great to work with and great rate to move me from San Carlos to Los Angeles.

Downloaded the app and hired some guys who came, unmotivated to work. They literally did not wrap any of my furniture pieces. And to top it off I paid more than I ever had for any moving company

Scheduled and confirmed to help us move some heavy furniture at 9:00am. No showed and didn’t call. When I called at 9:30 to see where they were, they had completely forgotten and I had to scramble last minute to find someone else. Very disappointed.

Edgar and Rudy arrived on time, and they worked quickly but carefully. They were professional and friendly, super helpful, and a pleasure to work with. As an added bonus, Edgar managed to fit all of my boxes and belongings into a 10x10 storage unit and saved me having to upgrade to a larger unit, so he saved me money as well. I will definitely ask for Edgar and Rudy when it's time for me to move my things from storage into my new home!

Ramon was very responsive and his team did a great job. They were a few minutes late and arrived after the window they suggested. I would like to say that despite all the quality of work (nothing was broken, just a mattress a bit dirty on one side) and more or less punctuality our move was not as smooth as it could have been. Ramon gave a price for a 2 people team, for 2-4 hours. They did not do an initial run through, nor took a thorough list if the items. Our move ended up being 6 hours with a truck full before all our stuff was in. We had to carry the rest ourselves as we did not want to pay for a 2nd run. If Ramon and his team did a better initial check of our items, they would have guessed it would not fit in the truck they suggested and that 3 people would be better fit. They also could have warned us as they arrived and saw our load rather than telling us at the last hour. Anyway, it was not the easiest move as the team had to carry the load to the truck further down the road then initially planned due to unexpected construction on the walkway. I appreciate the crew highly for their extraordinary speed and carefulness. They were also very good at making use if the space in the truck to get the max. Out of the loading zone. The two did the work of three. Overall, I can recommend them but make sure they are not giving you a low price with short hours just to get the business and you end up paying (rightly in this case) twice or more of the amount then originally planned.
