Excellent service. I had to replace my water heater and got multiple quotes from plumbing companies who made it seem so difficult. Jose replied to my request right away and within 30 minutes he was already at my house ready to start work. He picked up the water heater and didn't mind to finish work the same evening even though it was already late. He did an excellent job replacing the water heater and even checked with me the next morning to see if everything works fine. I will definitely work with Jose again Keep up the good work!

Ray and Gary are highly recommended. They worked on a number of projects as I remodelled a unit: - rerouted all the plumbing in kitchen - moved location of hot water heater - added sink to a toilet room - rerouted gas line Ray is everything you could want in a professional: great communication, clear bid, trustworth, punctual, and most importantly, does really good work.

Great friendly service from Dinh - the water heater replacement became tricky with the size difference of newer water heaters interfering with the current pipe routing and Dinh did a good job on the custom fit. He was also flexible working with my schedule in order to complete the project quickly and minimize the amount of downtime without hot water!

BJ was professional as well as quick... my water heater was fixed within a few hours of first contact. He replaced the thermal coupler and I paid hundreds of dollars less some of the other quotes for the same part. Thank you, BJ for getting our hot water running again. It's nice to take a hot shower! I would definitely use him for other projects in the future.

Great customer service and Josh, the plumber who came to replace the water heater, was professional, knowledgeable, clearly explained what he was doing, and patiently answered all of my questions, while working from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on a Sunday!Just wish I'd called Mr. Rooter when I first started having trouble with the heater. Stan, the owner of the company, also stopped by to double-check some questions so I'm impressed by this company.

Gerardo was amazing! PG&E shit down our gas water heater because they deemed it a hazard after they saw that it was giving off really high reads of Carbon Monoxide which meant the heater needed repair, cleaning or replacement. He replaced the missing piece on our water heater, cleaned up the area surrounding the water heater and even went out and got us a carbon monoxide reader to make sure that my family stays safe in the future. He also checked and replaced our garbage disposal. He is an amazing, clean and efficient handyman. He also arrived to our home within 10 minutes of our phone conversation on a Sunday!

Max arrived early to appointment and got things done professionally. Required no supervision and knew exactly what he needed to do to replace our 40g water heater with a bigger 50g HE version. When we ran into a problem, Max again stepped up to the plate and took care of it. Would definitely hire him again.

I needed to replace my water heater, as it was making scary sounds from the debris inside. Harris responded quickly and kept me informed throughout the process via text message and phone call. The technician did a good job of informing me of my choices. They finished the work within a couple of hours of signing the paperwork. The workmanship was very good. They replaced hard pipes with flex lines for earthquake safety and extra shutoff valves to isolate the recirculation line. The technician explained the permitting process with the city. I thought they were a bit expensive, but I was very satisfied with the overall experience.

Danny was exceptionally professional and approachable. Unlike experiences I have had in the past with other companies, he seemed trustworthy and honest. He took care to evaluate the problem (a leaking water heater drain valve) thoroughly and explained all of his findings and different options well. We did spend a bit more than we anticipated because of another problem discovered, which was the only challenge as a novice to the plumbing world. So happy to have found Oak Plumbing and Danny and would definitely contact the, again for future plumbing needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
