Rocco came to my home to cook for my guests. He did a great job !! While he was serving the food for us he was sharing his cooking experience and also he told us how to select healthy foods: while we were eating to hear his experience and knowledge about foods it was our appetizer! The food he cooked for us the flavor came from the food itself: our food it was not too spicy or add too much another thing to get the flavor ( like cream , too much butter or oil) but I can tell from the food flavor Rocco use fresh and organic food for his cooking and that gives his cooking very natural and healthy taste ! He is very charming and thoughtful! The food was phenomenal! I really recommended Rocco as a experienced chef for someone who need healthy and testy food for parties or for any event! I have a plant to hire him for all my future events. I really excited to know such a talented chef in the Bay Area!! Thank you so much Rocco to make my dinner party very special and an forgettable!!

Amazing food & setup! Everything was covered!! The fresh salad & dressings, warm tortillas, cheese, cream, different selections of salsa, guacamole, onions, cilantro, grilled meats & veggies, beans, and of course, the favorite- churros! Everyone went crazy for them! There was an abundance of food. They made our party a hit- thanks so much!!!!

Chef Sat cooked a delicious meal for my party of four. He was flexible with the menu, which I had to adapt for my picky-eater parents. We had the bruschetta, beet salad, halibut, and steak (the halibut with couscous was a big hit), and just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite, he brought out the baked pears with cashew cream – his recommended dessert. We practically licked the plates clean. Trust him when he tells you to get this dessert. Wow. He arrived right on time and the meal was paced out very nicely. He cleaned everything up for us before he left and we had plenty of leftovers. Thanks for a great evening, chef Sat.

They were on time, had plenty of food for the number of people expected, the food was good, and setup and clean up were quick and efficient. About the only thing they could have done better is remember to bring ice for the lemonade. That's a very minor thing in the big picture.

As a event coordinator I have worked with Steve and the folks at DNL Catering on many special occasions. We have worked together on wedding and baby showers, brunches, wedding receptions, work Christmas parties and anniversary parties. They always provide a menu to your request and the playing of the food is always on beautiful plates and dishes, not aluminum trays. There are always compliments on the foods from the guests. We are always a happy with the selections. Their website makes it easy to browse their menu and I always receive a reply promptly when I submit an event request online. DNL Catering is on my preferred vendor list when I meet with future clients. I have used them in my own home numerous times. They are my 'go to' caterers for any event.

My experience with Deborah for a professional business meeting was top notch. Prompt, plenty of food, catered to a picky audience (gluten free one person, another no tomatoes, another no cheese, bla bla bla). Everyone was impressed with the food, and the service. Many thanks. And it kept on giving, that night my 14 yr old freshman reminded me that it was his turn in Adviser session to bring snacks, so Wallah! - Bunt Cake to the rescue. It also turned out that another Advisor was not there and instead of the normal 8 - 10 kids they had two groups and only ONE treat. Again Bunt Cake to the rescue - he and 18 kids demolished that cake at school today and it was PERFECT! The salmon was divine - from the local fish market, and the desert, fresh peach and strawberry cobbler with homeade whip cream we are still eating.... Can't write a better story. I gave the Donuts to the staff and right now am eating cheeses and Kelly left for an evening meeting and discovered the left over pasta, so she's off with it, and we all had the rest of the salmon for dinner last night (except what's in the fridge). Masterful job! All ended well. thanks again from us all John

This caterer prepared lunch for 30 people on Memorial Day for us. We found them on Thumbtack and we’re glad we went with them! Everything was as expected or better! First of all, their smoked ribs were AMAZING. Everything else (chicken skewers-very tender, deviled eggs with smoked bacon, garlic and honey meatballs, grilled corn, vegan pasta salad, arugula salad) was delicious as well. Everyone should add their Bourbon Banana Pudding for dessert, because it was so good! I love Paul Martin's banana cream pie, but this pudding was even better! I would definitely go back to them again. Too bad I forgot to take some photos!! And yes, they are very professional. Just tell Matt what you are looking for and he'll come up with a menu for you. Easy!

Angela was so great in accommodating my last minute birthday party. We needed a mixed menu of vegetarian, meat, nut-free, and gluten free. The menu was fabulous- flavorful stuffed chicken, veggie dumplings with marinara sauce (omg), and out of this world ice cream cake (who would've ever known it was gluten free!). Another thing is she didn't just drop off the food- she helped us serve it. We loved the personal service and attention to detail! 👍🏻👍🏻. Definitely hiring her again!

Lucas created and executed a beautifully, delicious menu for my mother's 75th birthday party. It was a dinner party of 20, and he accommodated all "special" requests. Pleasing 20 people at once is no easy feat, but Lucas, and his server Doug, worked flawlessly together to make every one feel special and important. The food was amazing- meyer lemon cream shrimp fettucine-Yum - chateaubriand steak- delicious and cooked to perfection, shrimp canapes, decadent mac and cheese- he pulled it off to perfection. We could not have asked for anything more - it was beyond our expectations for this very special evening. Lucas is a great find!

Finding Diamond Cut Catering, has been a blessing to our family and to the new happily married couple! My meager "thank you" will never be enough appreciation for what Lena and her fantastic Diamond Cut Catering crew provided! With any business agreement, communication and respect for the person in which one is doing business and the one receiving services is a number one priority and from the moment I found Lena and her amazing crew, it was apparent this is their number one priority too! Not only did the communication flow beautifully, before, during and after the ceremony, their standards are above and beyond those in the same profession. My son had his wedding at 10:30 in the morning, which, although gorgeous, presented new obstacles. Lena and her right hand, and talented chef, Zachary, put us at ease from those obstacles and showed up 4 hours early to the venue to make sure EVERYTHING was set up perfectly! And, it was perfect!! Now, if Lena and her Diamond Cut Catering crew can put so much effort into the small details, you can only imagine how fabulous the food tasted. IT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD! Moist, succulent, beautifully flavored and plentiful! My review could go on and on just on the food alone but behind the amazing menu are amazing people who truly care and love what they do! I also chose to have bar service and our bar server, Jennifer was fantabulous! Again, communication was key since the reception was outside, in a barn and it happened to be one of the hottest days of the summer, she quickly advised us when we were low on ice! She was on top of it and all our guests enjoyed her! As I mentioned, it was a very hot day and not once did I see our servers complain, but instead were right there by our side serving the wedding party with appetizers and water while we took after ceremony pictures, along with taking care of our guests! I never once worried about our family and friends, because I knew they were in good hands! Lena and her Diamond Cut Catering Team made my son and his beautiful bride's day one to remember and I thank you for being a huge part of our special day! THANK YOU!

The event was an adult dance party with friends and local residents so going in we knew everyone would be pretty respectful and helpful. So there was the question of whether we should even hire Roddy given our tight budget. But we were so glad that we did because we found his service to be invaluable. He showed up to the party early and dressed professionally, he helped set up, during the party he cleaned, he refilled and restocked drinks, he even ran to Safeway twice for forks and ice. After the party, he cleaned and did whatever we asked. He was always polite and had a smile on his face the whole time. Roddy kept the party running smoothly and it was awesome having him there. Roddy handled any issues that came up which allowed me to hang with my friends and dance the night away. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to anyone considering using him.

Booking Loann to make the wedding cakes was the best decision I made the entire wedding . I went to countless bakeries in all of the east bay and would get answers like we don’t work with fondant, that’s too much work, I can make them but smaller or some wanted to charge me over 1k per cake! I messaged Loann on thumbtack showing a picture of the cake I’d like and she gave me an awesome price! She even met with our family for a taste test . All of her flavors were amazing the cakes were fluffy and moist and the butter cream was so delicious. They were almost identical to the example I showed her if not better. Guests were taking pictures with the cakes and asking about who made them. She even went out of her way to rent rent both cake stands and decorated them with flowers for us . I highly recommend Flourfacedbaker and look forward to working with her again . Thank you!!!

They were extremely responsive and kept in touch with us up to the day of the event. Everything was perfect, impeccably organized and tidy and exactly as we asked. The meat was excellent and the tacos made to order and fresh. The condiments and sides were fresh and the salsas were delicious. They provided everything including plates and forks. The churros were amazing. They were filled with Bavarian cream and fried fresh to order. The corn was excellent and they had all the sides. We had several guests ask for their card during the event. We will ask them back and we know several friends will too. What a great experience with excellent delicious food. Thank you for making my birthday perfect.

That little black chili wagon you guys drive around is a Brinks armored vehicle of great tastes. I love the chili, and I'm not a pushover after years in Texas where people get into fights over the stuff. The sauce on the red hen chili is hard to describe, kind of like reviewing a chardonnay: smokey with little hints of cinnamon.” You know the thing. Anyway, the operative word is rich; the sauce is amazingly rich, almost like a mole, with all sorts of unusual flavors running through it. The tamale pies are also great. I have gotten more credit than I deserve serving them at brunch with sour cream and cilantro on top. Keep it up. I would love to see your products at Whole Foods or some other accessible retail outlet.

Working with Lalita was a dream! She catered my birthday dinner for a small group of girlfriends at a getaway in Watsonville. Lalita was always very responsive to my inquiries and helped me craft an amazing menu for my budget. She was professional throughout my entire interaction with her. And the food!! We can't stop raving about the food. All the dishes she cooked for us were out of this world in terms of flavor and richness. The chicken wings were to die for! They were crispy and light, sweet and tangy -- probably one of the best Asian chicken wings I've ever had. The noodles were light and packed with fresh seafood. The panang curry with the coconut cream sauce was so rich and complex; all my guests said that was the best dish. Lalita's attention to detail was impeccable. Her service was attentive. She has a very sweet personality and we enjoyed talking to her about her food and her journey as a chef-entrepreneur. The dinner party went off without a hitch and we are grateful to have had Lalita be a part of it. I am definitely going to hire her again to cater dinners and parties for me. It was such a pleasure to work with Lalita.

Venessa was great, she was one out of three chefs that responded right away and we decided to select her based on the sample menu she provided. We thought her menu would be the best suited for the event she catered for - a female founders brunch. Venessa was very responsive and friendly. She kept me updated of any changes in cost and in person she was lovely. She brought everything that we asked including extra utensils. The brunch was a huge success and everyone commented on how much they enjoyed the food. Personally, the highlight for me was the home made whipped cream with jam! It was out of this world and reminded me of the clotted cream you get in England with tea and scones. We would definitely hire her again for our next event! Thanks again Venessa!

I found St. John Event Production through a corporate event. The food was delicious and I especially liked the ambience Michelle created with the themed decorations, serving dishes, etc. I am always on the lookout for great caterers and service people so that I can offer the best to my clients, which is the reason for this review. I am an event planner and was orchestrating a wedding for a very savvy bride. She wanted a sophisticated reception in a classy venue and had a strict budget. After meeting with my usual top two caterers, I met with Michelle and Schuyler to get their ideas and I am so glad I took a chance and chose a St. John. Michelle offered many options and worked with me to create the perfect combination of delectable food and beverage options as well as creative props to transform the venue from a safely neutral space into a romantic, inviting room that reflected the bride and groom’s personalities. My success is dependent upon delivering a stress free experience for the bride that exceeds her expectations. Because I am admittedly a control freak, I’m sure I drove Michelle crazy with my constant phone calls to make sure everything was on track, but she was a total pro and was always one step ahead of me. Now, some specifics….. we decided on setting up food stations throughout the venue rather than a buffet. The coconut shrimp and samosa eggrolls were a couple of the favorites along with the roasted pear with candied pecans salad, the super tender short ribs, and bacon-wrapped scallops, not to mention the scrumptious deserts that accompanied the wedding cake (vanilla ice cream with caramelized pineapple and crispy crumbled topping was to die for). St. John provided not only the food and décor items, linens, chairs, tables, plates and flatware, but also a full bar, including bartender! The staff was very attentive and jumped in to help the florist as well as the venue manager to make sure every detail was in place. I was really impressed with how well they went out of their way to take care of the guests. The bride commented on the extra attention they paid to her elderly parents, bringing them their favorite menu items and keeping their champagne glasses full. I will definitely be hiring St. John again. They helped me deliver a wonderful event while making my job so much easier!

unique flavors like no others. Quality ice cream and other frozen dessert and outstanding service.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
