my family and I were victims of a bed bug infestation from a large multi-unit building that we moved into and my family had them for the third time and I pray because today we found out we had him the third time was the day my sister began to break down and cry 3 times in a row and then I knew that I had to do something so I began to pray and to look and thumb tack him upand the first company came up was Williams Company ProTech and he had the most reviews so I decided to read his reviews and when I read his reviews I was blown away because everything that I was told about bed bugs or wrong because I was told they were difficult hard to get rid ofand you will have them forever and he was getting rid of them he was having much success in fact his reviews blow me away so I decided to hire him the first thing that I noticed about William was that he was punctual he is very professional and very trustworthy right away I felt at home with him and I felt at ease I've asked him many many questions and never had another family member asking questions and he's always answered them I have had him he's on his second treatment with me and so far I'm 100% satisfied that he has done the best job that he can do the greatest blessings is that emotionally we're not devastated anymore I look forward to the day when I can say I'm completely thoroughly clean from bed bugs but it looks good for right now he is my life time choice

Their knowledge/experience on bed bugs was formidable. After they treat the problem they come back in 2wks for a progress report /checkup and give a 30 day warranty. Great friendly customer service. After having multiple kids stay at our house, my kids started getting bit up and after finding out that it was bed bugs (unfortunately) I lost days of sleep. Greg came to my house yesterday to spray for (unfortunately) bed bugs and my husband and I just loved him. From the 1st call of him knowing pretty much everything about these nightmares to his affordable prices to his initial visit which he showed up EARLY. He gave us so much advice and was so knowledgeable and down to earth. I can tell he knew what he was doing and genuinely cared about his business. I’ll give it a few weeks and update my status as far as how fast the spray works. But customer service and punctuality he gets an A+ in my book. Thanks Greg 😉

I was horrified to learn I had bed bugs. George was the first person I spoke to after wasting hundreds of dollars on extermination that did not work. George gave me a quote on the phone for heat fumigation treatment. He then came to my house a couple of days later and treated my house. His team was awesome. Theyndid a great job and I haven't had any bites since. Would highly recommend him to anyone.

We experienced the devastating effects of finding out that we had bed bugs and Joe, our service technician was amazing! He came out for the initial inspection and arrived on time and he was thorough, efficient and told us exactly what we needed to do step by step to get rid of the pests. He also was understanding and patient with our questions. We set a date a week from the consultation to have him treat our home and we called him a couple of times with follow up questions and he made himself available, cheerfully, each time to answer our additional questions. He also gave us an extremely fair price and did a thorough job!! He was wonderful to work with and made a very stressful situation much better!! It has only been two days after the treatment but we have not seen any sign of those terrible pests......and with Joe's educating us thoroughly, we KNOW what to look for. He is the best!!! Thank you!

Active Pest control is honest, reliable, professional, clean and fast company for all your pest control problems from termites, bugs, spiders, bees, rodents, ants, ticks, and waterbugs. We got several quotes but was very impressed with Active Pest Control. They were fast in getting a termite quote to us. They were honest in the problems we had and gave us two options of controlling our termite problem. Van came out and inspected the termites. He did a thorough job of inspecting the termite areas and gave a thorough report of details of all the work that needed to be done. He gave us a good price and he was not pushy in trying to get you to do the termite work. Above all, the termite service was awesome from start to finish! I was surprised that out of all the other Pest Control company that came out he was the only one that came with shoe covers to protect our house from getting dirty. I love that extra attention to detail that they provide with their pest control service. I would recommend them to all my clients since I am a realtor and they provide great Pest Control and Termite Service with professionalism. Will definitely use them again! Two thumbs up!

I had a excellent experience from start to finish with 24 hour termite. From the initial phone call I spoke to Gus who was very helpful and was able to inspect my house on the same day. I've never had a pest problem so before I decided to go with them I called several different companies, 24, was without a doubt the most thorough w/ that had me feeling the most confident out of all the companies, not too mention the price was extremely lower then the other major companies. I had initially called because of swarming termites coming from inside my house, I mean hundreds!! of flyin bugs coming out of my wall. The treatment was set up within the same week and I havn't had any problems since the treatment. The whole process was way easier then i thought it would be, thanks Gus and 24 hour termite team!

Three years ago we had a terrible Bed Bug infestation in our home. We initially attempted to get rid of them ourselves with home remedies; diatamaceous earth , sprays and foggers etc Then we enlisted the help of 2 different exterminating companies using chemicals weekly for about 16 months with no significant results. Although I was discouraged we continued looking for a solution. We had heard about heat but knew of no one that had machines. Finally, a friend of mine said they had experienced bed bugs but had been helped by a local company that rented equipment at a reasonable cost designed for Do It Yourself persons like myself. We called American Bed Bug Equipment and spoke to Vincent. He gave us specific instructions to prepare our home and the good news was we didn't need to discard anymore of our furniture as the exterminators told us was necessary for success. Well, we followed his instructions to the tee and in less than 36 hours we were Bed Bug free and have been for 2 years!! All I can say is if you have a Bed Bug problem American bed Bug will treat you right and get the job done.. Respectfully , Adetra Jones

Ants. Ants everywhere!!! There were ants in the bathrooms, bedrooms, in the bed, in the kitchen - they seemed to just appear! Ron was great, and was able to come out the day after I contacted him. He did such a great job. The ants took about a day to go away, but now it seems they are all gone!! Thanks so much Ron!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

How long does a bed bug treatment last?

Bed bug extermination can last forever as long as the treatment killed all the bed bugs (and their eggs) and if new bed bugs are not transported into the location. Factors that can affect the outcome are how severe the infestation is and whether all bed bug sources were properly identified and treated. When working with a pest control professional, the EPA recommends you check and call references; ask if they offer both chemical and non-chemical treatment options, if they recommend both encasements and interceptors, and if they offer two or more service visits and follow-up. Bed bugs are tiny (adults are roughly the size of an apple seed) and can hide anywhere a credit card can slide into. They squeeze into cracks in walls, behind electrical outlet sockets, in bedding, and in other dark places. Learn how to prepare your home for a bed bug treatment for the best outcomes. Michigan State University shares some examples of possible reasons that a bed bug extermination is not 100 percent effective:

  • Not all sources (aka hiding places) of the bed bugs were identified during initial inspection.
  • Not all sources of bed bugs were treated.
  • The insecticides used were not effective or, in the case of heat treatment, there was insufficient contact time.
  • Infested items such as bedding or other materials were reintroduced into a cleaned area.

How do you check for bed bugs?

If you are concerned you have a bed bug infestation, look for physical signs of their presence. Bed bugs love to hide in small, dark spaces and typically come out to feed (generally on human blood) after dark — although they will come out in daylight if hungry enough. The Environmental Protection Agency states that indications of an infestation can include seeing shed exoskeletons of bed bugs, rusty spots on your bedding (which are either bug droppings or bloodstains), live bed bugs, bed bug egg casings, a sweet and musty odor (if the infestation is severe), and evidence of bites on your skin.

To spot bed bugs, look in and along mattress seams and bedding, in curtain and furniture folds, inside cracks or crevices in the walls, behind picture frames and mirrors, under loose wallpaper seams, on recently used luggage or backpacks, inside electronics, and inside clothing or cluttered areas such as closets. If you see signs of bed bugs, be careful not to disturb them too much as you don’t want them scattering to other parts of your house.

How do you get and get rid of bed bugs?

Bed bugs can travel into your home via luggage, secondhand furniture or clothing, and other items that have been exposed to the little pests. Bed bugs are tiny and flat (about the size of an apple seed and the height of a credit card), so they can easily hide in dark, small places and hitchhike into your home. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people don’t even know they’re transporting bed bugs as they travel from location to location, infecting areas as they travel. The sooner you notice a bed bug infestation in your home, the easier it is to get rid of it. The EPA suggests an integrated pest management plan to get rid of bed bug problems. This means a multi-pronged approach that takes the bug’s life cycle into account, uses chemical treatment where needed, and takes all necessary measures (use of encasements, high heat washing and drying of bedding, etc.) to stop current and future life cycles. Unless you feel confident about controlling a bed bug infestation, it can be wise to hire a pest management professional to prevent the problem from getting bigger.
