Santos and his team were excellent - the two movers arrived right on time, handled all of our belongings with great care, wrapped and packed everything safely in the truck (best packing job I've seen by movers ever), unwrapped all the furniture when we arrived at the new house, disposed of all the packing material, and they were very friendly and easy to work with. I hope we don't have to move again any time soon, but if we do, this is the team I'll call. These guys worked so hard right through the heat of the day - they were very appreciative of the cold drinks we provided, so please remember to do the same when you hire them!

Steve and his moving partner showed up on time & moved our items in a timely manner to the truck. We moved 1.3 miles away & the unloading took a bit longer we had a one bedroom condo with a couch bed, desk and a table w/ 4 stools along with some boxes from kitchen & bathroom the reason I gave only 4 stars was because of the length of time it took to unload our items it took 8 hours from 10-6 2 hours to load and 5 hours to unload????and cost us about $200 than we were expecting. That came as a shock but the service provided and the movers were kind to our items and hospitable. I highly recommend Albion moving but suggest a timeframe and pricing beforehand.

Johnny and Sergei were great. Really efficient and timely movers. Took 4 hours total for a cross city move with a ton of furniture (2 sofas, 2 dressers l, several tables, desk, bed etc). They also were very meticulous and careful with my belongings and wrapped EVERYTHING! Will definitely hire again!

I learned of him through a person I was buying a couch from in SF and she mentioned that she had a 'great' mover available she'd worked with for years if I needed help getting it to my place. I got the movers info and spoke with Daniel the owner. I explained to him I had some stuff in a storage in San Jose I needed him to grab, then to come to SF and grab a couch, make a third stop to grab another piece of furniture I'd bout in SF, and finally deliver everything to my 3rd floor apartment.... he gave me a ridiculously fair deal (almost the same cost if I'd have rented a Uhaul and gotten a helper for 5 hours and done all the driving an loading/unloading). Daniel was amazing! He was very easy to reach (both phone and email) as well as willing to accommodate my special requests. He gave me updates along his route at the different stops and showed up when he said he would... Best of all, him and his team had packed everything carefully (I could see the wrappings they'd put on furniture when they brought it up to my apartment), handled everything with care, and where extremely respectful of my stuff. Daniel and his crew are top class. I've already introduced him to another friend, and I will absolutely be using him again and recommending him to others.

We had a particularly challenging move, getting a washing machine out of a basement where the machine barely fit through the doorway and stairwell. The Leclair movers were careful to pad the glass portion of the washer to protect it and were persistent and found a way to get the washer out.

On time. Work fast. No add on charges for anything, unlike a lot of other movers. Wrapped everything well and cleaned up their mess. They actually undercharged me a little by rounding done their time! They worked 10-15 minutes longer than the 3 hours I was charged. best recommendation I can give is that I would use their services again Highly recommended!

The movers arrived on time (within the 1 hour time window that was scheduled) and the move went smoothly. We had packed all the boxes and they brought some extra boxes for the small loose items we had. They also wrapped all our furniture in blankets and nothing got scratched or damaged. The movers were super nice and outgoing, a pleasure to work with. We would hire them again any time and can recommend them for anyone planning a move.

These guys were very friendly and helpful. The moved our junk out very quickly. It was a bit pricey when you compare value to all the work our apartment movers did for us recently, but it was worth it because they came at short notice even though they'd clearly had a long day. Would recommend them to others.

This was the first time using Thumbtack and MP Movers delivered far beyond what I expected. They were professional and had all of the tools needed to complete the job. Communication was great and they were proactive in making sure that everyone was on the same page. I specially liked that they were prepared to take payment through credit card. I would absolutely hire MP Movers again.

I hired this amazing team of movers to haul some items from a warehouse in San Francisco. I couldn't speak more highly of their professionalism, their commitment to getting the job done, and how easy it was to communicate with them. From the very first phone call to updates all along the way to the final delivery this was an absolute A+ experience all the way around and I look forward to hiring them again for any of my future moves.

It was AMAZING!!! Sin and his partner showed up in a huge truck. Must have been like 20ft long. There was so much room I could of fit my entire house in there. They were incredibly polite and courteous. All of my furniture and fragile items were taken very good care of. I’d definitely use them again. Best movers in the Bay Area!

Thank you American Choice Van Lines for all of your help in coordinating my recent move. The entire staff at ACVL Movers was courteous, knowledgeable, and most importantly fair and honest about the cost of the move and time frame necessary for delivery right from the free estimate to the end. I was given a fixed price which would not change based on the companies estimation of my work load. I have moved several times, and after this experience, I would not consider going to anyone else for moving services. Anyone considering hassle free moving should look no further than American Choice Van Lines.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

      • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
      • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
      • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
      • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
      • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
