Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

What is included in lawn service?

Full-service lawn care companies typically offer a wide range of lawn care services, including mowing, mulching, landscaping, leaf removal, tree and shrub care, and more.

Companies may offer additional specialty services, depending on your location and the type of business. For example, a company may provide seasonal maintenance services such as aeration, hedge trimming and weeding, while another offers pest control, seeding services and grub control.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Cain Landscaping did an excellent job with weeding our front yard. The price was good and the results were amazing -- a very high quality and professional job. We look forward to hiring Cain in the future for a landscaping project we need to have done. We highly recommend Cain Landscaping to others, too.

Greg showed up exactly when he said he would and completed the job on time. The weed jungle is all gone and my back yard is ready for landscaping. He even spruced up my front yard a bit, too (thanks, Greg!) The price he charged was very reasonable for all the work that was done and I like that the estimate, invoice & appointment reminders were sent via email. I plan to use GWS landscapes to design & landscape my yard too.

Sean Thomas of Thomas Lanscaping was OUTSTANDING! He and his crew were punctual, hard workers, extrememly knowledgable in irrigation, drainage, and all aspects of landscaping. He found ways to save us money, and listened to what we wanted. He doesn't cut corners - does everything right the first time so we won't have problems later. Very customer service, polite, and the results were fabulous. Our backyard turned from a pile of weeds and drainage nightmare to a beautiful english garden. We are thrilled with the work Thomas Landscape did, and plan on using them again in the future for the front yard. Oh, Sean also worked with us to keep the job within the budget, but give us everything and more than we ever imagined. Best decision we made was to go with Thomas landscapes for this project!

My patio was completely overgrown by a garden gone wild. It was a jungle! Jose and his partner quickly and efficiently got the vegetation under control. They charged a fair price, arrived on time, and cleaned everything up nicely. I highly recommend J&J Landscape, and will be contacting them for future garden projects.

Rob was great to work with. He was quick to come see our job and he gave us a very reasonable estimate. We found him to be friendly, very knowledgable and positive. We landscaped our back yard which consisted of irrigation, laying down sod, bark, plants and some decorative rocks and stones. Rob listened to exactly what we wanted and worked with us closely. We have recommended him to friends and family and will hire him for future projects.

Rob did a wonderful job. I would definitely use him again. Both the front and back yards look amazing and we are totally satisfied. Here's the unique thing with Rob. He doesn't like to work with drawings or plans. So you either need to totally trust him or have enough knowledge about landscape design that you can have in depth conversations about your problem situations. For instance, even though we had just purchased the home, we could see we had drainage issues around the garage and needed to pay special attention in that area. We had actually previously paid a landscape architect to draw up plans, but we were not happy with how that relationship was developing. So, we paid her for her time and took the drawings such as they were. Rob barely glanced at them. At first this made use nervous. But, here's the thing...if you get too married to a drawing, it doesn't allow you to be fluid enough to adapt to the ever changing situations. Frankly, it worked out for the best. We ended up with a perfectly melded version of Rob's ideas blended with some of the best of our original ideas. Nevertheless, when developing the contract without drawings, you'll need to be a little more specific about things that would have otherwise been called out in the drawings, such as how many plants of what size, how many yards of mulch, how many tons of what kind of rock, etc. It's a leap a faith, but Rob wants to do quality work and make his customer happy, so it's a leap I'm happy we made. (I am incapable of taking decent photos, but Rob had professional photos taken. Please ask him to take a look. They really are beautiful.)
