Mike Huh To give some context, I was born in Korea but raised in the states since I was two. I am now in my forties, and I have always wanted to learn hangul so I can communicate with my family. I have been taking Keon’s lessons since this March, twice a week. It’s been pleasure to have met you as the first teacher that reached out to me. I did not know what to really expect. I just wanted to be able to have a basic conversation with my family. I’m glad that you were able to help me immensely. Perhaps because I was born in Korea and learned a little Korean since I was very young, I didn’t have too much difficulty pronouncing words so it was great I was able to learn grammar right away. It’s really great that you don’t have to think much about how you can get better since Keon prepares lesson plans that help you get to intermediate from beginner quite fast. All I was responsible for was doing his homework and reviewing the class materials as much as possible, which was a little hard at times but still manageable. As a newbie to a language so different from English and Spanish that I am fluent in, I must have been a relatively slow learner. But Keon has been incredibly patient and diligent in explaining to me some parts of grammar that I could not quite get a grasp at first try. Keon, I am very thankful that you have been able to help me become somewhat conversationally fluent over the course of this year. Though a little late, I congratulate you on getting accepted to Berkeley. I will look forward to resuming your lessons later this year :)

A wonderful 5 stars. Kristen tutored my 7 year old son in reading and writing during the summer. I thought I would quote Kristen from a few of the updates she emailed us as I feel this aptly captures Kristen’s dedication, quality and professionalism as a tutor: “My hope is to help James feel authority and confidence when he chooses a book. The "quality" of the reading material is less important than the habit. No matter what he reads, he is becoming a better reader as long as he engages with the book… Learning to write is a procedural practice, meaning we wear it into our brains like a groove in a record. The improvement will happen over time. By the end of the week James could read his own writing back to me. At the beginning of the week, he couldn’t. Also he proposed his own writing assignment in lesson three. That self-challenging initiative is a good sign. That means he understands how to utilize tutoring, how to create an idea out of nothing, and how organize his thoughts around that idea. He dictated the piece and then I recited his dictation and assisted with spelling of larger words as he wrote. He clearly wanted to communicate his thoughts on soccer in writing…” My son ended the summer with a book about dinosaurs that he wrote and illustrated with Kristen facilitating the process and discovered a confidence and enthusiasm for reading and writing. We are grateful for Kristen’s help.

Marie is a great tutor, and is very thorough, and insightful. She is very efficient and begins her lessons speaking French right away! We have had about 3 sessions so far and look forward to continuing to work with her. We purchased the 5 pack series which is what I would recommend. Marie is a great tutor for anyone who is taking French courses in school and wishes to improve, or just wanting to learn conversational French.

I can’t say enough about how great Laurence is as a French teacher. She is professional, very conscientious and is always focused on integrating new learning materials that she thinks will challenge me. She is also flexible - when I wanted to focus on a specific subject, she went out of her way to find relevant materials to use. She is always on time for lessons and again, is flexible if I need to change a lesson time. She is also incredibly kind and patient, and is a lovely person. I highly recommend Laurence as a French teacher.

Dani was my first English teacher, and I remember clearly of her sweet welcoming high-five on our first day of class. She contributed a lot not only to my language learning, but also to my professional career for I am an English teacher as well. I remember her classes were really motivating, interesting, and fun. She provided us with clear explanations and was open to answer our questions. All my classmates felt in a very comfortable and safe environment throughout the course. Dani is a very prepared and effective teacher. She has linguistic and applied-linguistic knowledge, great teaching skills and respect and for her profession as well as for her students.

Hola!!! I absolutely love Karen. She tutored me for 8 months in Spanish and boy did I relearn a ton. I had taken Spanish for over 10 years but you know what they say when you dont use it you lose it. She was always prepared for our lesson and worked at my pace to ensure I was grasping the language..Our lessons were 60 minutes bi-weekly sessions. Unfortunately I had to move due to a new job but if not I would still be working with Karen!

I have twins in high school and they both really enjoy working with Scott. They learned so much in the initial "Writing Basics 101" with Scott, and now they work via email with him on various assignments. Scott is meticulous. Rather than sending quick edits on the writing samples, Scott responds with detailed explanations. He also checks in with me on their progress.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
