We needed a backyard concrete patio (17' x 20') and a sidewalk/walkway around the house (from front door, along side of house to connect with backyard patio) poured. Scott was an excellent contractor - made sure to understand the project completely, clarified work orders beforehand, had great suggestions, excellent communication skills, got verification of expectations before, during and after the project, did the work in a timely manner, the patio and sidewalks are perfect, left the site clean, couldn't be happier with the actual concrete pour and results. Our house looks great, the project opens up the yard for use, and the finish on the concrete makes it safe whether the patio is wet or dry. The rain/water is directed away from the house and the patio will last forever. Scott was very professional from start to finish. I highly recommend his work. Thank you!

We hired Excel Construction to do a complete kitchen remodeling and enlarge the existing space by expanding the walls several feet to the patio area. The new kitchen included the installation of the upper and lower cabinets, new paint, new backsplash, marble counter top, LED lighting and new dishwasher, stove and range. Eyal, the project manager and Revital (the lady that we worked with in regards to all the documents, payments and permits) from the office who did an outstanding job helping us. During the work, we clearly noticed that they were always made sure that the costs will remain the same and won’t pass the budget that was set at first and they made sure the job was done accurately. All the sub-contractors that they employed for our house (carpenters, electricians, painters etc.) were outstanding, qualified and experienced. We were very fascinated that our project Eyal was able to complete the entire kitchen few days earlier than he promised us. We were always given a personal attention by Eyal, who was very good in communication and organized and by Revital. The new kitchen looks perfect and very useful and we strongly recommend them and we will hire them again for any remodeling project we may have.

Channing was on time. Even though the job turned out to be more work, he didn't charge us more. He even gave us tips on some other projects around the house. We are completely pleased and will be calling him again.

From the first time Jay came out to give an estimate, I knew he was someone I wanted to work with. Throughout the process, he stayed in constant communication and was always professional. His work in installing 5 doors around my house and garage was excellent. He's a problem solver with a great attitude. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Haggerty Construction!

Victor is a well experienced painter and handyman. I placed my job request and he replied with a very fair quote. I made appointment with him to come and looked at the job ,and gave a date and time needed to complete the drywall for my kitchen ceiling and painting family room. He completed the job on time as planned. He even helped out in some other little things that needs attention of handyman for free. I've already lined him up for some other work in my house and recommend him to neighbors and friends.

Scott installed a ceiling fan so he can def do electrical and installed some custom forged brackets to put up some really heavy found wood planks for shelves. I was really nervous that the brackets wouldn't hold the weight of these planks but he assured me that they would be fine and put in heavy duty anchors (I think that's what he called them). I was super happy with him and his work. A lot of people don't like to work in Dtla but Scott didn't blink an eye about coming down here. He was early if not on time and he even offered to take his shoes off since we are a non-shoes in the house set up!! He cleaned up after himself too. Will definitely recommend!!!

Scott is an amazing guy to have around our house. A contractor would have cost a lot of money, but Scott gives the same quality if not better. He has built us a fence, tiled our kitchen floor, painted the outside of our house & has replaced some windows. Scott is a wonderful guy/contractor to have around & has been with my husband & I for a year now.

Really nice guy and easy to get a hold of. I will definitely be calling him again for any future plumbing needs.

I worked with this team of builders over eight years ago and they have been my guys ever since. I trust their judgment, their ability to predict time frame for completion of a project and their adherence to the budget. They are professional, responsive and creative in their approach to solving problems. With this team you will feel like YOU come first. I highly recommend them for both a remodel and new construction. And lastly, they were very careful with my pets when my home was under major renovation. Major points for that kind of respect and care.

We remodeled our master bathroom, kids bathroom, and kitchen with Skyline Construction. I strongly recommend Skyline to anyone looking for a responsible, transparent, communicative, and above all else, quality professional general contractor for remodeling, renovation, consulting, etc. Communication was timely, something extremely valuable with complex projects. Work estimates and risk factors has high accuracy with regard to both time and cost (this is a very uncommon feat in the industry). Quality of work and professionalism of workers on-site were supreme (I was personally present 2-3 times a day, every day). In addition to all this, Skyline continued to take care of us several weeks after the project was done and the contract ended. They made sure to take care to reseal, re-caulk, and/or fix any problems or flaws we found (we only found minor, trivial stuff) as we started living in the house and as fixtures, plumbing, tiles, and flooring begin to settle into their final resting positions. Skyline anticipated this settling, informed us that this is natural, and continued to send in their workers and technicians to make sure every single detail was excellently taken care of. Highly recommended. If you go with Skyline, you choose to go with a real pro. I am definitely hiring them for my next project.

We had 3 bathrooms remodeled by hillstar construction, which included 2 complete remodels (master bath and Jack/Jill) and 1 minor updating of guest bath. This is our first remodeling experience and lior and his crew made every effort to accommodate our needs and requests. We relied on lior advise for details and very happy of the outcome. lior responded promptly and communicated well, and his attention to details was really good. We also noticed that hillstar construction used higher end product than other contractors when we compared the estimates and asked specific questions. They installed frameless glass showers and completely replaced floors on two bathroom, changed countertops to quartz replaced we actually had to change painter (from different paint company) to lior crew as we did not like the original work. lior crew completely removed wall paper before painting, which original paint person could not do. Major part of renovation was completed less than 2 weeks, just couple of hours for installing glass showers later and some paint work due to change of painter along the way. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the quality of the work done and the outcome. Also, LIOR went beyond as a contractor as to helping us manage the house while we were away during renovation, and it is very much appreciated. Bottom line, he can really be trusted for the quality of work he provides.

Had such a positive experience working with Solid Builders in 2006 when we added a gorgeous master bathroom, that they were the first people I consulted when I decided to do a major renovation of literally every room in my house in 2017. I trusted Brad and his crew to be respectful of my property and privacy, and to take special care of my cats who are not allowed outside. One of the things I like the best about this company is that the price they quote you is the ACTUAL price of the work. They do not try to "upsell" you. They will communicate honestly with you, including advising you when you are about to spend money unnecessarily. Brad actually SAVED me money! Another thing I really appreciated about everyone in this company is that when tell you a specific day and time they plan to work, they SHOW UP at that time with the materials they need (unheard of!) There isn't a lot of "down time," or gaps in the schedule. Lastly (and I could go on), these guys are very focused on client satisfaction. They do not settle for sub par work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
