Jack performed 3 different repairs (unclog bathroom fan, repair hole in metal shed roof, and clean gutters) and charged what we thought was a reasonable amount. He was on time, congenial and capable. We would definitely call him again (besides I LOVE his business name).

Edwin did an amazing job, we had a great comunication, helped us with advice along the project, he seemed that he cared for us to be happy with our house more than anyone. He friendly advised us in matters that we were not consciusness about. He is good in everything, from top (roofing) to bottom(tilles, wood flooring, electrical, painting). Would I hire him again? Definetly YES.

This summer we decided to finally replace the roof on our 1924 Craftsman Bungalow in old Reno. Aesthetically, it was important to maintain the historic integrity of the house, but it was also equally important to consider a more green option. We chose to move forward with a metal roof option due to its Energy Star rating, lifetime warranty, fire-proofing properties, and its recycled content. Another consideration was that we plan to capture rainwater and snowmelt for landscaping and over time the metal roof will not shed material like an asphalt shingle roof, offering cleaner water for collection and storage into a cistern. After the decision to move forward with a metal roof option, we took some online recommendations to look into True Green Roofing. I spoke right away with Audrey Smith, and within the same day as my initial call she was on-site with brochures and literature to peruse, and then was up on the roof taking measurements. We received quotes from non-metal roofing companies around town in order to compare costs, though we were set on the metal roof option. Surprisingly, True Green Metal Roofing Solutions quote came in several thousand dollars less than the non-metal roofing company quotes. I was sold on the fire-proofing and energy-efficiency and was prepared to pay more for these "guarantees". Roughly five years ago, we replaced the roof on the garage with shingles, and I am surprised to see several of the shingles already lifting and buckling. As the work began, I was impressed with the level of communication from True Green Roofing Solutions, specifically Audrey, who is always several steps ahead of the project and very forth-coming with exact schedules for product delivery and installation. Aside from perfect communication and accurate timelines, Audrey is incredibly knowledgeable, and a joy to work with and I looked forward to answering each of her calls. We have lived in the house with the new roof for 4 months now, and as the colder weather is approaching I can absolutely feel the efficiency of the metal roof holding in the heat, and the cool in these past warm, end-of -summer months. This first bill that arrived for the chilly month of October, there was roughly a 25% saving from last October. This was the goal!! Very happy to see the lower bills continue. Aesthetically, the roof looks absolutely beautiful. There have been several inquiries when I am out working in the yard. Everyone wants to know who replaced our roof. I would certainly recommend True Green Roofing Solutions!! In fact, the garage will be next as the shingles continue to lift. I will review again in the future as we do get a rainwater/snowmelt situation in place. A metal roof was the most practical roofing solutions and lends itself to a classic style complimenting our historic Craftsman Bungalow. Call Audrey today, you will be thrilled with the end-result!

Our first experience with Troy was in 2009 when he worked on our bedroom extension and remodel of the master bath at our home in Grand Terrace, CA. The entire job took about 6 weeks as we had to remove a patio and deck in the process. From start to finish, Troy was professional in his work and very easy to talk to and make decisions with. He did an excellent job with the framing and roofing as well as the installation of new bathroom fixtures and tile work, both in the tub area and the flooring. If there was something we questioned or asked to have done differently (i.e., taking back a bathtub to replace it with a larger, soaking tub), Troy was always accommodating and happy to do what we wanted. When that project was completed, Troy framed and installed a new deck and sidewalk in our backyard.Over the next four years, we had more projects that we called Troy for help with and he was always ready and willing to come take a look, give a bid, and tackle the work. We had him install attic fans in the house, make and install shutters on the front windows, and paint our house. The work was always done to our satisfaction and we miss being able to call him for work we'd like to have done as he is no longer in southern CA.We highly recommend Troy Malley as a professional handyman whose work is exemplary. My husband and I hired Chris and his crew to do the roof on our new home as well as the roof on our existing house. The new home we knew needed less work due to it being new construction and originally had no intention of messing with our old home since we were putting it up for sale. The job they did and the manner in which Chris handled any and every dilemma, minor along with major, just blew us away. We are far into our 60s, my husband and myself, and very much set in our ways. We hold onto our money and expect to get every bang for every buck spent. Chris didn't feign understanding he actually appreciated our position and met every request, no matter how demanding or insane, we made each time. When he was not able to accomplish or acquire what we sought he didn't pull a fast one, never hit us with outrageous hidden or after the fact costs. He came personally to inform us of everything each step of the way. His charming and very down to earth, honest nature makes him and his employees more than hired help; to us they are very close to family in our eyes and hearts. Because of this we have since used the services of Complete Home Maintenance on two roofs, gutters, interior and exterior painting of our new home, carpet to hard wood flooring on all 3600 sq ft and they are currently fixing the disaster tile work done by another, not to be given the satisfaction of a mention, handyman/remodeling specialist in our master bathroom. Along with the big jobs have been countless 'honey-dos' that myself and husband have requested throughout each project. I want to make clear I am not aware of anyone else's position or experience with Chris or his company short of the friend who referred CHM to us and the expectation shouldn't be assumed, however, it should be mentioned that many of the smaller items such as installation of some appliances, plumbing issues, fence work and landscaping (minor jobs) went uncharged or bundled in at impossible to pass up discounted amounts. I am forever grateful to have received the referral of Chris and his team. This experience has given us such a different outlook on our untimely and unplanned transition between what was our dream home of 35 years into what we can now afford in today's market. We are on an adventure and we have been inspired to take pride in our new home and life which I promise you was nothing my husband nor I imagined possible. Please consider CHM for your current or upcoming project needs. You won't be disappointed I'm sure of this. This is the first review I have ever given and I hope I have completed it appropriately and at the same time given you the courage to make the call to Chris and his company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
