I had hired David Gomes to dismantle my cot and assemble it again in the bedroom. He arrived on time and brought all the tools required. He does not charge by the hour unlike other handymen/carpenters and charges only according to the effort involved in the job. His charges are very reasonable. He seemed very sincere and he helped me hang a rail in the kitchen for free. I definitely recommend him !

I hired Casiano's to replace my kitchen faucet. The faucet was making noise and then water spray got clocked. I had already purchased a replacement faucet that was recommended by my HOA, so I just needed someone to come and replace it. I wasn't able to be present, but my renters liked that setup was friendly and professional. When I arrived to inspect the work, I found everything as good as new. I also appreciated Casiano's flexibility to accept payment via PayPal. This allowed me to not bother my renters with payments, inspect the work afterwards and pay without scheduling further visits.

Mr. Hartwell demonstrated explicit knowledge and understanding of his ability to perform the job at hand. Not only did he demonstrated his ability in his work, he also demonstrated his ability to explain in explicit details the different alternatives there were in solving the problem. From the end results as well as the cost in material and labor for each method "prior to performing any work or committing to any method. His work rivals that of many contractors charging twice as much per hour. I would recommend him to anyone needing door work done.

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

We hired Eli for a total interior renovation of our newly purchased home, including changing the layout of our first floor, adding a half bath, 2 full bath and 1 kitchen reno, hardwood floor, HVAC, roofing, repiping & electrical work. Total value of the project exceeded 140K, and lasted ~ 4 months. Eli & team delivered good quality work and kept us at our budget. He is a professional with high integrity. He was always responsive, provided helpful, thoughtful and truthful advice, and committed to his promises. Our journey together wasn't without hiccups, but Eli is someone you can trust as a partner battling any challenges together along the way.

Our remodeling was done remotely, and yet we were thrilled with the end result. Lifetime Remodeling provided us with the highest quality of work and costumer service. Lifetime remodeling brought their structural engineer, completed blue prints, got the plans approved with the city, and orchestrated all the professionals. The work included taking down walls, electrical work, building a pantry and a walk-in closet, repositioning a supporting beam, enlarging windows, creating a bar, painting walls and cabinets, changing bathroom floors, installing kitchen backsplash, hardwood flooring installation and refinishing, and more. Shmuel and the team were very receptive to all our requests and easy to communicate with. The job was completed within the planned budget and time frame. They truly care about doing the best for their clients, and it shows. Highly recommended.

We contracted Lemon Remodeling to convert our second floor to a master suite w/master bathroom. Alex and his team handled everything from start to finish: architectural planning, permits, building, and finishing. All within budget and all while we lived in the home. They were professionals, and the final results reflect that. The place is beautiful. I would highly recommend Lemon Remodeling and Services to anyone & plan to use them on my next project!

We called Wise Stage Remodeling for a new fence installation in our back yard. We weren't totally ready for the scope of what we needed in our backyard, so we asked if they could help us transform our front yard into something pleasant. Sergey Asadov came back with a beautiful landscaped idea for our front yard. He built a fence, and created some extraordinarily beautiful front yard landscape and planters. A fence was built, modern styled concrete poured and landscaping was created. The front of our house is a happy place to come home now. We are definitely going to try and hire Wise Stage Remodeling for future projects!

After much discussion, my wife and I decided to remodel our dated Victorian kitchen. Following online research, multiple in house consultations and estimates, I was surprised by the significant valuation deviations and the lack of insight concerning maximizing our space. I recognize with these old Victorians that there can be complex problems once you start tearing out the old, planning around electrical, but these valuation inconsistencies concerned us; subsequently, we put off our remodeling plans. A couple months passed; my wife was at a school fundraiser and explained our situation to a friendly couple. They recommended a construction company called Refresh and Build; we eventually contacted the firm and spoke with Sam. Once we explained our situation and vaguely what we were looking for, we set up an onsite consultation. Sam not only gave us a reasonable quote but the best advise on how to maximize our medium size kitchen in an artistic style while maintaining the Victorian’s integrity. The project moved along on schedule and within budget! We were so thrilled with the ease, pricing, and final product that we had them remodel our bathrooms. My wife is happy for now! ;) Highly recommended.

After months of searching for the right contractor to do our remodel of our master bath,we found pacific and the process and the way they handle and do remodels is genius, we just finshed with them about a week ago , and I am beyond happy with the finshed product. Moran and his team kept me informed and involed in the process the whole time , not everything little thing he came to me with , only decision they he knew i would want to make , I selected who i wanted to do the work, i knew everything up front , i wasnt hit with a bill after. Or change orders. and after a bad kitchen refacing( with another company ) that took months and tons of problems , I was kinda scared to countitue , but Pacific gave me my joy back , I will forever be thankful for the time and energy moran put into the project.

First just want to note that I rarely ever leave reviews for anything. Jay and his crew were awesome and I felt like they really deserved a great review and some insight into hiring them. I had a really hard time finding a *licensed* contractor to take my job because 1) it was a repair that needed immediate attention and 2) it was a more complex situation that involved 2 different homeowners because my unit leaked into the downstairs. Jay was very helpful and understanding, and he was very honest and easy to work with. Also to note, I was unable to be there for the fixes since my tenant lives there and I live 8 hours away -- Jay regularly updated me on the status, sent me pictures of the whole process and completed everything very quickly. I'm a marketing professional and found Greenstar to be very professional, on time and reasonably priced AND provided high quality work - all things that are very hard to find. I definitely trust them and can confidently say I would recommend them and will hire them again for future jobs.

Mike and Appetite for Construction did some excellent remodeling in our 100 + year old home in the SF. We weren't sure what direction we wanted to take and Mike was able to help us figure it out and get the job done ahead of the deadline. Now we have a beautiful new kitchen and open area that we love to come home to! Thanks Appetite!

Wow I just can't say enough about this company! After much consideration we chose Advanced Builders and Contractors to remodel our kitchen. Our new kitchen, consisted of new custom cabinets, quartz counter tops, mosaic back-splash and tile flooring. With any concern or question we had they were always there to answer questions. Their tile work and grouting turned out stunning! The tile guy was extremely fast and diligently. The finished kitchen seems straight out of a magazine. I absolutely love it! All the workers arrived on time every morning, worked long days and when they left they cleaned up in and out. We highly recommend Advanced Builders and Contractors if you ever need any type of remodeling. I get compliments from every person that comes through our kitchen. We'll be contacting them again for our guest bathroom project. Thanks Advanced Builders and Contractors!

I hired Adam to design our home's renovation. We want to turn our one story Victorian into a two story by digging out the basement and raising the house. Adam did a great job listening to us and included all the things we wanted in the new floorplans. He respected the old architecture of our home and neighborhood while incorporating our very modern aesthetic into the design. We're excited to see his plans come to life.

There are some times in life when you unexpectedly meet someone truly special, and that happened to my wife and I when we chose John to work on our home. We posted to Thumbtack just looking for a carpenter one day, met John, and ended up with a skilled builder who will be a friend for a long time. He did a kitchen addition for us, handling all the aspects from carpentry through plumbing and electrical and more. One of the most skilled builders I've ever worked with (always focused on "doing it right"), more versatile than most (over the course of our project he did engineering and on-the-fly design as well as handling all hands-on tasks), and a genuinely great guy to be around. The whole family was ready to adopt him. My wife and I wholeheartedly recommend John.

IRA is an excellent company that strives to fully satisfy. This was the only company that truly listened to my desires and made sure to explain all possible options and limitations that could lie ahead. They have a trustworthy, courteous and hardworking group of craftsman. The end was everything and more than I was hoping for. While they were not the cheapest pricewise, the cost is worth it in the end. You made my family very happy and proud of our new kitchen. Thank you!‎

We did a full bathroom renovation and it was done on time and on budget despite the fact that the builders discovered some pretty bad leaks in the old bathroom that had to be patched during the renovation. Could not be happier with the experience and would recommend them very very highly!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
