How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

Laurie is very professional and reliable. She has taken excellent care of our dogs and house while we go on vacation. She sends updates to let us know how it’s going, she keeps the house nice and clean, and I have been lucky to be a repeat family for her to pet sit for. Laurie is the best!

Brenda was wonderful; I was able to enjoy my trip to see family and not worry about my 19-yr-old cat, my 2 fish tanks, or even my plants! She sent an update every day and took pictures. She was flexible, patient, and understanding. In a rush to catch my airplane, I forgot to leave out detailed instructions for cat care, feeding fish, giving treats, emergencies, etc. Luckily, Brenda took notes when we first met and reviewed requirements. Very capable. Brenda took care of changing some pee pads and the inconvenience of finding and picking up poop that did not make it into the litter box. Couldn't give 5 stars just because I don't have any other experiences with pet sitting to compare to. I feel like there might not have been 60 minutes of companionship and petting/interaction. Since my return, My cat has started a practice of wandering around the apartment meowing in a very loud, sad, pained way even when I'm home. He also had a poofy build up of shedding hair that normally isn't there if he gets a little daily petting. Then again, the old man cat might have been stressed with being alone a lot more than usual and that caused shedding, loneliness. And, well, he's 19. Brenda is a nice, trustworthy, and knowledgeable pet sitter. I would call her again if the need arises.

My spouse and I -- and our 2 dogs -- adore Jodi! We personally interviewed 4 possible dog/house sitters that we contacted via Thumbtack and Jodi was instantly outstanding the minute she arrived for our first chat. She is warm and has a quick sense of humor as well as being intelligent, mature, and indeed reliable. Most importantly, our two dogs took to her immediately, and she showered loving attention on them right away too. I arranged for the dogs to spend time with Jodi again before the 11 overnights of pet sitting began and it was very clear that she was the perfect fit for our Romeo and Séamus. Dogs always know who the good people are, and dogs totally love Jodi! I should also say that she took wonderful care of our house and looked after the garden watering as well. She kept us updated and texted us pictures, too, which of course put our minds at ease while we were away in Ireland. Very thoughtful of her. When we returned home everything was in perfect condition. We're so happy to have found Jodi and we would will certainly hire her again the next time we travel. Just a marvelous all-around experience with Jodi, and she gets 5 stars from Romeo and Séamus too!

My husband and I are so appreciative to have found our new cat sitter, Nicolette. She really takes this job seriously and I felt extra confident knowing she only specializes in cats. When meeting our cats, she had a great approach by getting down to their level and letting them come to her. I thought it was a nice touch that she also carried catnip in her bag, just in case. She cared for our 2 fur babies on 2 separate 1 week trips in June and July 2018. She did an excellent job by being punctual, followed all instructions I'd left and was also extremely reliable. Even after I offered for her to skip the busy 4th of July holiday, she endured the beach traffic to be sure our fur babies were safe! I also really enjoyed her daily text updates with nice, clear photos, and could tell our cats were not just fed and watered like other services we've used, but, she actually took the time to get to know them and keep them happy. It was pretty clear that our cats were given lots of love and attention - especially our male, who grew pretty attached (traitor! haha). If you have cats you love but are called away from home, trust Nicolette for your cat sitting needs. She really knows cats and seemed to love ours almost as much as we do. It's such a relief to have a pet sitter we can trust while we're away!
