Hired Maverick Consulting for the edit of my non-fiction book. Very personable and even met with me in person. Edits and comments were easy to understand and helped improve the flow of the book. Edits were given in a timely manner. Communication was continuous even after the editing work was completed. Feedback was given as way to improve the overall flow and quality of the book. Very reasonable rates for the amount of work on manuscript. Definitely recommend Maverick Consulting for your literary work!

Carl was hired to teach Hebrew to my daughter who is in Kindergarten as well as to teach my husband and I Hebrew. Carl is a very dedicated professional that has a true gift at teaching. He makes the lessons fun and teaches in a way that keeps the learner engaged the entire lesson and always excited about learning more. This would not normally be an easy task while teaching a 5 year old, however Carl makes it look easy. Our daughter looks forward to Carls's weekly visits, as do we. Carl even went out of his way to find a special Hebrew educational book for my husband (who already speaks pretty decent Hebrew- but wanted to learn more). I would highly recommend Carl for any tutoring, writing, or editing services you may need.

I have worked with Lois for the past three month, and she is just AMAZING. I have learned so much from her about public speaking, interview techniques and accent reduction. I am now much more confident about my English and presentation stills. She did an absolutely fantastic job on editing my resume and personal statements. Unlike online editing services (which just correct grammar and punctuation mistakes and typos), she spent time to know my vision and what I really wanted to express. The end results were impressive pieces that were personal and really made me stand out. Lois is intelligent, delightful and inspirational, and I truly enjoy her teaching. I especially love her homemade iced tea in this hot summer. I strongly recommend Lois for her lessons and will definitely continue working with her!

Chris O’Toole took on the Sisyphean task of: 1) proofreading; 2) providing a general critique: and 3) giving insight on whether and how to move forward on my draft play and associated essay. Mr. O’Toole use the yellow highlighter feature in Word to show his proofreading suggestions. I am still finding grammatical and word choice errors. This may well be because—due to my limited eye-sight— I didn’t see all his yellow highlights in making my corrections. He provided a general, dip-lomatic, thoughtful critique of the play’s subject matter; use of metaphors, poetry, and language; and connection with a reader or an audience. In making and evaluating my decision to hire an editor in general and Mr. O’Toole specifically, I looked at five factors: 1) experience and expertise; 2) cost; 3) turn-around time; 4) interactions; and 5) quality of work. Regarding the first, while I do not know Mr. Toole’s experience with plays, his website clearly indicates significant experience in editing other forms of professional writing. I believe the quality of editors’ websites and offers of services is a good indicator of their knowledge of and skill in teaching clients like me how to connect with their readers and audiences. Regarding cost, other editors I consulted charged on an hourly or a per page basis while Mr. Toole, in this first editing interaction, offered a very reasonable flat fee. There are pluses and minuses with each ap-proach. A flat fee was best for me for the initial editing of a draft play. The third factor is crucial for most authors working on deadlines. Mr. O’Toole sent me his edits and critique within two weeks. A second editor I contacted told me she could not get to my draft until January. Fourth, ed-iting is a collaborative enterprise: an editor needs to know the writer’s audience, intent, focus, and voice to help that author create his or her best work. Mr. O’Toole gave me feedback and questions on the writing sample I originally sent him. He sent me a follow-up email—with a targeted ques-tion--while editing my manuscript. Overall, I am happy with the initial editing efforts Mr. O’Toole gave me: professional; cost-effective; timely; and interactive. I am still rolling around the four page, shiny, rock critique he also gave me: gold or dross; foundational, aspirational, or weighing down: moving the draft higher or back into an inky sea? Whatever it ultimately is, he initiated a thought provoking internal and external conversation for/with a novice playwright just as my response here illustrates the meta-phorical challenges Mr. O’Toole confronted in critiquing and advising me on my writing.

As a first time author I was tentative about reaching out to a stranger to evaluate something so personal. Melanie made the experience incredible and exceeded all my expectations. Anyone who writes should appreciate the need to render the services of a professional to edit their work. Melanie is smart, punctual and very good at what she does. I would recommend her highly!

Brad prepared a quality resume & cover letter for me. We met at his office and spent close to an hour learning about my sales background and what I wanted to achieve in a job. I even referred a friend who hired him based on my suggestion. Upon my initial resume I never asked for a re-write till now. I wasn't receiving any responses on the positions I applied for. Brad went out of his way to work with me on some re-write adjustments and now I feel 100% more confident. I strongly recommend his services.

Cindy is an absolute visionary. I am a senior in high school, and I met Cindy a few months before I began this school year. My strengths academically are mainly in reading, writing, social studies, and philosophy, but Cindy has enhanced my knowledge and appreciation for mathematics, science, and my capabilities in problem solving as a whole. When I first met Cindy, I was in desperate need of a math tutor, but what I received was more than I could have ever imagined. Aside from her outstanding mathematical capabilities, Cindy has served as my mentor, ultimate problem solver, entrepreneurial guru, and ultimate inspiration throughout my college prep and application process. As a fellow performer, and actress, Cindy also has helped me explore my passion for theatre, and expand it to become a flourishing intrigue with anthropology, psychology, and motivational speaking. She is literally the reason that I am now travelling as a motivational speaker/ Body Positive facilitator to youth, ranging from middle school to high school. In offering her invaluable time, ambitious mindset, and incredibly compassionate demeanor, she has allowed me to find my true passions, and encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, Cindy is beyond this world amazing. Whether to call her an angel, an oracle, a goddess, a reincarnated Albert Einstein, or any other form of awe, I am not worthy to concretely say. However, I can attest that Cindy has absolutely changed my vision for myself and the world around me, my societal views and aspirations, as well as having enhanced my mathematical and test taking capabilities. Truly, Cindy is the most wonderful, kind, creative, talented, and intelligent essence, one could ever hope to meet or aspire to become.

I am a software developer looking to gain some knowledge in statistics for developing automated stock trading systems. JD and I corresponded many time through Thumbtack, but I did not use his services. He was honest enough to tell me that the likelihood of writing a profitable system is very low. He also has a background in IT, which makes me respect his opinion even more. I would recommend JD, and if I ever need statistics help he will be the first person I call.

My son who is a high school senior needed someone to review his personal statement for his UC college applications. I requested a writing tutor and Victor Solis of Initia Test Prep responded within the hour! I reviewed his profile and his website and it seemed good. I was impressed of how Victor reviewed my son's essays in a short amount of time and gave important recommendations. He also answered any questions that I had about UC schools, admissions, etc. I highly recommend Victor Solis and Initia Test Prep.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
