I wanted to fix a broken bedroom door, and I am glad to pick David Gomes as my handyman. Seeing the number of positive reviews he has, I decided to call him on the phone to describe the problem with my door. He clarified which pieces had to be replaced, what I'd be buying at Home Depot, how much the parts would cost, and how much his labor would cost. He was very clear in his explanation, and it was obvious that he has a lot of experience in this field. After talking to him on the phone, I later asked if he'd be willing to install a bathroom door in my master room, and he gave a very fair price for both jobs. We met at Home Depot during the morning, and he quickly identified which parts I needed to buy for my 2 jobs. At my house, he skillfully installed the 2 doors I needed, ensured that they closed perfectly, seamlessly matched the old existing moulding with the new door's moulding, and I have two brand new doors now. When I asked him if there was any way he could make one of the doors quieter, he found the adhesive strips necessary for dampening the door when it was slammed. After those two jobs were done, I really liked the way my doors turned out, so I pulled out my list of home improvements while he was still around. I had him change a toilet, paint the doors he installed, fix a broken shower door handle, etc. I just asked him how much extra he would charge for each additional job I asked, and I was convinced that his rates are very good. There are a lot of people who know how to do things, but very few can perform to the detail that you would like, with the work that lasts for years to come. It's important to find the right person who knows what he's doing, and David Gomes is a plumber, electrician, and the everything-handyman whom I'll always have in my contacts for whatever problems arise with my house. I recommended him to all my friends & family who have houses, as they'll appreciate the excellent work he does for the great prices he charges. If you find someone who claims to be able to do something for much cheaper than what David Gomes is charging, you'll probably end up regretting it later.

We have had several new lights lying around waiting to be installed and Arisel and his co-worker were able to come over within a few days notice and take care of our home projects. They were especially great at dealing with some of the challenges that come with updating an older home. We had new shelving and a light installed in our laundry room (required removal of the previous light and re-positioning of the wiring). Lights also installed in our hallway and outdoor patios along with installation of a new doorbell and trim to our garage exterior. Everything looks good but will require some paint touch up which we plan to diy.

I will hire Ben again in a hot minute. He was very responsive to all of my questions. He was prompt coming to my home at our arranged time and did the job with professionalism. Everything was clean when he left and I was very satisfied with the job. I had one of the new Panasonic Whisper ceiling fans put into my bathroom. His recommendation was great and the fan is almost totally silent. Yes I would hire Ben from Prestige Home Improvement again!!!

Gleo is one of the most honest handymen I've had the pleasure of hiring. He came to our home, checked out our AC and pointed out how the air filter was clogged and the mesh around the condenser outdoor was dirty. He replaced the filter on his own dime and also cleaned the mesh around the condenser to improve the airflow and it fixed the problem. He recommended that I check the filter and the area around the condenser frequently and do my own preventative maintenance so that I don't have to spend money on a professional in the future at the cost of his own future business. I am glad I hired Gleo and whole heartedly recommend him for any handyman projects. I'll be hiring him definitely for my next project.

I would like to take this time to thank Dinh Nguyen for the excellent job he did for me. I had a leak in my kitchen sink so I posted my problem on line. Within minutes of the post, I received a call from Mr. Nguyen. I explained the problem to him, and he was able to come to my home within an hour of the phone call. He discovered where the leak was coming from and showed and explained the problem to me. The leak was coming from my faucet. So Mr Nguyen took me to Home Depot and we picked out a new faucet. We returned to my home, and he replaced the old faucet with the new faucet. Thanks also for leaving my kitchen in impeccable condition. I'd also like to say that the price was more than reasonable. So to anyone out there, if you are looking for a plumber, Dinh Nguyen is your man.

We hired Lifetime Remodeling in the summer of 2017 to do a first floor addition to our home in Millbrae. The project involved adding 400 square feet to our house, which included expanding the living room and adding a new bedroom and a new bathroom. It was wonderful working with Sam and his team at every step of the way. Their bid was very competitive compared to the many others I got, and the estimated time for completion (about four months) was much shorter than most of the other quotes. Lifetime's responsive customer service and attention to detail made our lives so much easier. Here are just a few examples of things they did to minimize our stress. When strong winds blew the construction fence over during off hours, they came out here quickly to get it back up and weigh it down with sandbags. When it came time to block off the parts of the house being demolished, they helped us move furniture and cover it carefully so that it would not get damaged or dirty during construction. When they needed to move the wiring for our internet access, they made sure to reconnect it promptly. The temporary wall they built was very sturdy and effective at blocking out dust, so we had no problem continuing to live in the house throughout the construction. Sam also closely inspected all the work and often caught adjustments to be made that I did not notice. For example, even though the interior painting looked fine to me, Sam decided that he wanted another coat. When we did point out other things that needed adjusting, such as leveling out certain fixtures, the team promptly fixed them. When I asked for a different design for our recessed lighting at the last minute, even after some of them had already been installed, Sam accommodated the request. Sam checked in with me often, so I always felt well informed about the next steps coming up and what I needed to plan for. This was awesome because I learned that it can be agonizing to pick out tiles, hardwood, hardware, etc. for a project like this, especially for someone like me doing it for the first time. It was also helpful to have Sam's recommendations for suppliers for the finishes and fixtures. We were really impressed that Lifetime finished the project pretty much right on schedule and with absolutely no cost overruns. To make this happen, most days, Lifetime had a team of two to four workers here by 8 a.m., and they worked steadily for the entire day. They also often worked on weekends. After Lifetime finished the addition to the house, we ended up also hiring them to do landscaping for our front yard and replacing our concrete driveway with paver stones. They also did a great job on this, and we are so happy with and amazed by how our house looks now. Remodeling inevitably involves many hard decisions and a lot of time, energy, and money invested by the homeowner! The last thing you need is a contractor who adds unnecessary stress, yet it seemed like everyone I talked to had horror stories about their contractors. We are so grateful that Sam and Lifetime made it a wonderful experience for us.

Hugo is very good person, he always answered my phone calls, arrives on time, very friendly, and honest. I needed new plumbing and few other things. I met him on Monday and I felt like I dont have to interview another plumber. He finished his job on Wednesday taking his few hours of time. He explains everything what he is doing which gives me confidence in knowing what is happening to the plumbing line. A contractor quoted me $100 for plugging in the new dishwasher, but Hugo said it is just connecting to the existing line, it will not cost anything. As a new homer, I can see how people are trying to fool for the lack of knowledge we carry on things. But Hugo's service is such that he wants to assure that he serves his best and makes sure that once he leaves the home we are peaceful too, by doing all possible tests to make sure there is no leakage. I recommend him to my friends and family. He is my plumber for my new home for any of my needs.

We would highly recommend Luis VerBraken – based on our experience with him and the really nice work he did in our home. Luis remodeled two bathrooms and installed a tile backsplash in our kitchen. The tile work (mosaic) in the bathrooms was not easy to work with, but he did a nice job of making everything line up and look great. We expanded the scope of the project a few times during the two months that he performed the remodel. He and his wife were professional about the changes and provided a full change order with a reasonable price for the added work. In general, I found Luis to be quite cost-effective for the quality of work he did. Luis is a hard worker, and other than a one week pre-planned family trip, he showed up without fail every day (and on quite a few Saturdays) to keep the project moving. We live in Piedmont and were a little concerned about the commute from his home in Santa Cruz – but he has extended family to stay with in SF, so the commute did not impede the progress of the project. Luis is a pleasant guy to have around the home and does great work – recommended for your next project.

This was by far one of the best remodeling experiences I’ve ever had. I am extremely particular about the details of my home, so with the help from Green Line and notably Junior, he did a fantastic job designing and remodeling our bathroom. During our consultation Junior was without a doubt unquestionably knowledgeable and had the skills and apparatuses to create the ideal optics. I am very delighted to have had the opportunity to utilize him and his dexterity. If you are looking for a remodel I highly recommend calling Green Line.

Phillip Price Construction did an amazing job on my home addition and remodel. My wife and I had never remodeled a house before and were apprehensive about selecting the right contractor. Once we met Phil and his son Nick we were very impressed with their quick and clear communication. They were very knowledgeable and went over their itemized quote with us. Once they started they flew through each phase of construction constantly updating us and keeping our decisions on track. All the worries and horror stories we heard about contractors were laid to rest very quickly once we started the project. We really got to know them over the 5 months we worked with them and really enjoyed the whole process. They truly made the process a lot easier than we had imagined. When it was all said and done they came it right on budget and a little before we expected. We could not be happier with our new home and the fantastic job Phil, Nick, and their sub contractors did. We highly recommend them and would never use any other contractor.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
