I needed a caterer for my dad's funeral reception. Spoke to other caterers but Carolina of Gourmet Lover's Catering was the only one who gave her condolences, this meant a lot to me. The full service presentation was tasteful, the food delicious and reasonably priced. There were no exta added on fees like the other caterers. I highly recommend Gourmet Lover's Catering, Boris & Carolina are a wonderful team and you will not be disappointed.

Jose was amazing to work with. We had him cater our wedding, and he crushed it. Seriously some of the best Mexican food I have ever had, and our guests couldn't have agreed more. The food for us however was just the cherry on top. Jose, from the very beginning was incredibly accommodating and went out of his way to ensure that everything went off without a hitch. At the end of the day I would reccomend Jose to anyone who is looking for exceptional food and just as exceptional service and professionalism.

WOW! I was not expecting such a perfect experience! We have used many caterers in the past, and many we have liked a lot. But Hampton and 2mika kicked it up another notch with their homemade fresh salsas, and "extras" that they thought my party of teenagers would like. Our teens LOVED the bacon-wrapped dogs, and I LOVED the potato tacos. YUM! Now I'll be looking for excuses to have them cater sooner rather than later. Prompt, clean, efficient, professional and most importantly, DELICIOUS!

Very professional and courteous. Celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary with mostly Brits who love Indian cuisine. The Indian cuisine served by Chef William was truly outstanding. Just going to enjoy the leftover for dinner tonight!!!!

I hired Tacos El Rey for my baby shower. From the beginning, they were incredibly professional and communication was clear. Within an hour of initially reaching out to them, my questions were answered and I knew that I needed to move forward with booking them for my event before it was too late. On the day of the event, Jose Gonzalez arrived about an hour and a half before the start time and wasted no time in setting up and cooking the meat. In the past I have hired previous tequizas and they usually arrived about thirty minutes prior to the start time and just reheated the meat—it was a great surprise knowing that my invites (and myself) would enjoy freshly cooked meat! (And the smell was amazing!) Throughout the event Jose was checking in to make sure that everything was fine, and he even informed me (and showed me) that the meat was starting to dry out due to the grill being on and my guests taking a "break" from eating. I made my rounds and announced the "last call" before boxing up all my leftovers. I still have some meat leftover, and the food was just as amazing the next day as it was the day of the event. The theme of my baby shower was a fiesta theme, so hiring Tacos El Rey really was the icing on the cake. Their set up is impeccable (they even use a mexican sarape for a tablecloth). The sauces they bring are delicious—I highly recommend the blended guacamole, and their rice and beans are just as tasty as my grandma's! I definitely will be using Tacos El Rey for my future events, and I will pass the information on to those I know looking to hire a professional and tasty taquiza!

Awesome is the perfect word to describe events by Jessica! I had to back-to-back parties in early December that couldn't have been more perfectly executed. Jessica thought of absolutely everything to make each party a success. From the caterers...to the bartender...to the waitstaff that she hired, all were perfectly informed, professional and fantastic at their jobs. The food was amazing, the staff was prompt and polite. Both parties could not have been any better! The first person I will call before planning my next event will be Jessica! She's AWESOME!

We hired Jeff and his staff for our wedding weekend. Friday we had a "meet and greet" BBQ and Saturday Jeff provided the food for our buffet style taco bar. We live in San Diego so we were really in the dark about Palm Springs area caterers. The food and the presentation was outstanding. We gave Jeff ideas for what we wanted and he took control and delivered all of it and more. He is a pleasure to work with and makes every effort to ensure the food is excellent and that everything runs smoothly (even when it's not his responsibility). Jeff helped with many components of our weekend, including putting us in touch with a reliable party rental business and culinary artist for the wedding cake. We are eternally grateful for Jeff and the Creating Catering staff for being part of our special weekend.

Excellent experience. We hired 1st class catering for Mexican food for a wedding rehearsal dinner. Michael is very easy to communicate with and responds quickly. All the pre-event coordination was seamless, and the day of was even better. Michael delivered the food early, helped us set it up and get the chaffing dishes situated, and left plenty of disposable supplies for the meal. Best part was the Mexican food was delicious! All of our guests raved about it. Definitely would hire him again!

I am beyond grateful to Thumbtack for connecting me to Chef Keith Prante and his team at Hautè Productions Events and Catering to cater my mom's 80th birthday celebration. They are absolutely A-MAZING! Chef Prante was one of two chefs who responded to my request via Thumbtack, and I also received a personal referral. Neither of the other caterers offered ANYWHERE NEAR the quality, selections, variety and value that Hautè offered at my price point. We had our tasting today, and it absolutely sealed the deal! Everything was delicious and the presentation was outstanding. I highly recommend Hautè Productions to any potential customer who appreciates excellence, accommodation and genuine customer service.

Chef Sarena was fantastic! She arrived early, well presented with all the necessary cooking supplies and food. She went above and beyond our request for a traditional Mexican Puerto Nuevo lobster dinner. The shrimp ceviche and tortilla soup were incredible. Without notice, she was able to even whip up a last minute, delicious dessert that left all of us in awe. The meal and experience was wonderful. Thank you Sarena- we will definitely be calling you again! -Jason and Wendy

After a long morning of memorial services, Zeke Casas respectfully catered a luncheon for my husband and his immediate family members. Prior to the day Zeke came to our home and reviewed our menu wishes for simple, yet unique Mexican food. The aunts/uncles/cousins and our family enjoyed the delicious luncheon; and Zeke's profile was low and again, respectful. Our family will use Zeke Casas again in the future for a more festive event.

I found Catering by Ashley/Blackburn's on Thumbtack. Wow, what a find! First they showed up on time, big plus. They were helpful and friendly in setting up. There were no hidden fees or surprises. They were very good with people. Bill and Ashley were both lovely people and professional. They were able to cater within my budget. The food was excellent! I received many compliments from those within my company on how good the food was.

I was able to enjoy their food at a friends event they catered. Had the Carne Asada tacos and Chicken Tenders (dipped in Secret Sauce). They had other food as well. Tacos were fresh and delicious, tenders were better than any others I had with a very unique sauce. Very happy they were the ones to cater my friends birthday party. Hoping they can cater my company event next month.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
