I have worked with Vela Construction Company for a few years now on several different projects ranging from small to large scale - varying into modernization upgrades and expansions. They have demonstrated a professional and ethical caliber with a willingness to appease their clients and uphold the old school motto of “Customer is Always Right”. The completion target dates have been maintained with very little change orders which is always a plus when you are working with a certain budget. The project manager always goes out of his way to make sure our site inspections with the city were resolved with no issues and all corresponding permits were cleared within a timely manner. The fact that we continue sending business their way is indicative of my satisfaction with this company. Jessica Trujillo, HOA Manager

We hired Ted Woods as our architect to build a new residence in San Bernardino County. We are still in the design phase, so this is a preliminary review without any photos. Ted is exactly the kind of architect we need. We phone interviewed quite a few before meeting with Ted and selecting him for our vacation home rebuild. He's a very knowledgable professional and produces a great product on paper. More importantly he's been a real creative "idea man" on so many levels. From how to maximize space on our strange shaped lot while still including great outdoor space l to reuse of materials and advice on demo and construction. He has incorporated our ideas in an iterative process and some of that has been on the phone and by email since we are remote from the site and his office. He also has connections to many people in the building and construction business around here, including the County offices where our plans will be approved. We look forward to showing off our final plans in the coming months as we move into construction phase with Ted along side us.

To find an architect who has developed a skill set in both exterior and interior design is a blessing. Randy designed a total remodel for our home from top to bottom , inside and out as well as a complete upstairs addition. We absolutely love the design and detail. We get notes on our front door from passers by who want to know who designed certain elements of our home. To be completely honest, there were a few communication hiccups, but they were brought to Randy's attention and he handled it professionally and without being defensive. Our overall experience was just great. I can highly recommend Randy without reservation and you will get every penny's worth of your investment.

To whom it may concern: Re: Greg Lang / USA Painting and Construction. In 2004 Greg and his company built for us a 550 square foot game room/oversized casita. The site was originally intended for a standard 300 sq. ft. casita so it was somewhat of a special project as the 300 ft. slab was already in place. The removal of this and the re-orientation of the new slab/foundation was the beginning of the project which consisted of the main room, a full bath, a wet-bar, and closet. The construction moved forward from there to completion without incident and within the timeframe stated and Greg’s design matched the exterior and interior of the existing house perfectly. Greg’s team was very professional and timely and we were scarcely inconvenienced during the construction. Greg or his foreman was on-site every day overseeing the project. In fact, my wife and I were in England for 3 weeks during this time and Greg took care of our pool, cleaning and adding the necessary chemicals. After completion Greg made some follow-up visits to address any problems. There are none to this date. Greg is a devout Christian and an honest man and we can recommend him highly for any construction or related projects. Randy and Lorrayne Burns Palm Desert, CA

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
