We had not had our gutters cleaned in 10 years, so this was quite a job. Not only did Francisco come the same day I called, he cleaned all gutters, took pictures of small issues on our roof and upper window frames, and exterminated a wasps nest that we were unaware of. If needed, he would have repaired gutters; but for our house this was unnecessary. Francisco also cleaned up any debris before he completed the job. We will use Francisco again in the future, for gutter clean-out, or any other type of roofing/window repair.

Forrest Ponder recently completed a complete gut and renovation of our 1957 master bathroom. The renovation included installation of a bathtub, toilet, double sink vanity, a shower with glass doors, a new window replacement, and radiant tile flooring. We are very happy with the way that the project turned out and Forrest was really easy to work with. He was great at listening to our wants/needs for the project and then carrying out our vision. He was quite concerned with making sure that we were happy, and corrected anything that we were not 100% satisfied with on the first round. He was detail oriented and kept our house clean throughout the project. Our bathroom renovation turned out great, and we would highly recommend Forrest for your next project.

So far the experience working with James has been fantastic...he really knows his stuff and has been able to advise us on on various aspects of the painting project. I would definitely recommend BKC over other painting companies because you can tell James REALLY knows his stuff. He is also always on time and prompt to respond to our questions. Work is underway at our house, but I will add additional comments when our project is completed.

Daniel and his crew were great to work with. They estimated up to a week of work for my project but were able to complete it within 3 days. They successfully completed my vision for the new wall, window, and pocket door. They are perfectionists and were quick to take something down and re do it when it wasn't working out just right.

I put in a request to have a couple of custom windows replaced and Neil and his team quickly responded to my request and came out to replace the windows the same day. They were quick in replacing the windows with good quality workmanship and were a good value.

I had the pleasure of using Prestige Windows for our new windows and doors in our home! They went above and beyond what a typical window company would do! Our windows arrived and were installed in a very short time frame around around 2 1/2 to 3 weeks! The installers were clean and nice and did an excellent job! They also corresponded with me during the entire time of shipping letting me know updates! I love the the quality of these windows and doors! I would highly recommend them to anyone putting Windows or doors in!

Josh went above and beyond and did an amazing job! The company we were working with decided to stop contacting us and Josh swooped right in to our rescue and within a very timely manner. Was able to replace all 12 glass pieces in our home that fit with our timeline to put our house on the market! I would definitely recommend him and would use him again in the future.

I can not say enough good about Conservation Construction. They originally approached us in late 2012 at which time I told them that we weren't yet ready to replace our windows. Approximately 1 year later they contacted us again and we invited the sales rep to come to our home. The rep was courteous, knowledgeable and explained everything in detail: from the materials used in the construction of the windows to the installation process. The installers were thorough, professional and quick about their task. The finished product has lived up to the claims that were made. We will definitely recommend Conservation Construction and their window products to everyone!

Kevin and his team did an outstanding job on a very complicated and difficult drywall patch and repair project at a retail building we manage. Their bid was fair and the completed the project promptly. I've used them since on a 9,000 square foot ceiling tile demo project at another building. Again, their bid was fair, they did great work and they did it quickly. We will continue to use them for our commercial projects.

Mike Meredith was personable and professional. We had previously tried to find a company to do small siding repairs but no one wanted to take it on. Mike stayed in contact by my preferred methods and worked exclusively and punctually around my schedule. His work was high quality, tidy and the price was fair and less than I had assumed it might be. Thanks!

For some context this was a fairly large commercial project with 40 plus installed windows. That said, Blake and Robert were excellent with communication and responsiveness to updates with the project. The communication and willingness of customer service sets this team apart. I look forward to future projects with this team. I recommend Z Double B with any project ranging with the small to the large. Kevin

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
