We hired The Crazy Caterer for a one time private chef experience for a 70th birthday party and they were amazing!! Tentative, responsive, and reliable. Everyone at the party was impressed and loved the personal touch and food. Great time with such short notice and the food was tasty. We are looking forward to working with Kim and Stephen again!!!

I can’t believe how amazing Pour La France was for our wedding. I have been involved in others’ weddings but I have never experienced the level of helpfulness, thoughtfulness, throughness and professionalism that Pour La France brought to our wedding. From the beginning of the process 8 months ago to the end of our wedding night, they were more helpful than I ever expected and definitely more than I’ve ever seen with other caterers for other weddings. They listened to our specific desires and tweaked details in our tasting session (which was so fun!!) and they even included services on the day of the wedding that were unconventional, just because I said we were stressed about them. They helped with set up and clean up and all of my relatives and friends who helped out with the wedding told me how sweet and helpful they were. They took so much stress off of the day for me and ny husband and was invaluable to us. Plus the food was AWESOME and everyone said so.

Tom is a talented, enthusiastic chef with a wide variety of ethnic and regional specialties. Tom has cooked in our home on a number of occasions, always to our complete satisfaction. We love his smoked meats and Gai chicken, but our hands-down favorite is his Mexican menu -- best guacamole we've ever eaten. He always chooses fresh, high quality ingredients and will cater to any of our dietary requests, be they paleo, organic, vegan, gluten-free -- he can do it. He does a terrific job with large groups. (Would you believe he catered a women's rugby team dinner in our home? It's true.) Aside from his skills as a chef, Tom is a fun, interesting person to know. Five stars!

Wonderful group of caterers. Incredibley kind and accommodating. Packed and stored all the delicious left overs, cleaned up the kitchen and brought a great bartender as well. The only criticism is that the salads were over dressed and thus soggy, but still had great flavor. I would definitely hire them again.

Everything was amazing!! Dustin accommodated our group of 8 foodies! He even prepared a separate menu for my cousin who is Vegan. The food was incredible, the service was perfect, and there was absolutely nothing for us to do but enjoy. The kitchen was spotless when they left and we were all fat and happy. I will definitely be using Dustin again in the future and will recommend him to EVERYONE!!!

Sparrow Kitchen catered a school Banquet with a Dr. Suess theme. They were great accommodated special requests on food. We had a variety of ideas and they did an amazing job of coming up with a menu that fit. We ended up with a breakfast for dinner menu that was amazing. The food was seasoned well, and very tasty. There was plenty of food for everyone and they had come up with vegetarian options that were amazing. I was amazed at the menu options and how it all came together. I would use Sparrow Kitchen again, and I would recommend them to friends and family.

I enjoyed working with this catering company! The food was pretty good and the catering delivery had the challenge of getting the food out & presentable very quietly, which went well. I had to take a star off because the chicken was undercooked on the two meals set aside for our folks with dietary restrictions and delivery on the second day was about 20 minutes late. Overall, the experience was good and I will keep them in the list of caterers for future events.

Knife and Pepper catered my wedding (150 guests, outdoor venue, street tacos and sopapilla bar), and I could not have been happier. The food was FANTASTIC, the presentation lovely, and the wait staff was professional and kind. I didn't have to lift a finger as everything was just taken care of-- including special options for my vegetarian and gluten free guests and family members! I, too, was pampered, and my new husband and I got to simply sit back and simply enjoy our special day. THANK YOU Knife and Pepper for creating such wonderful memories. P.S. my in-laws are still raving about the carne asada, and I seriously want to steal your shrimp ceviche recipe! Delish!

We contacted 3 Chicks Kitchen for catering a birthday party. The catering menu didn't match up with the regular restaurant menu and we wanted to try out the dishes before committing. Sandy had us come over one afternoon after the restaurant closed and we were able to taste everything that we were considering for our event. Sandy was interested in our feedback about taste, texture, and asked us what our preferences were. She took notes about our special requests and got back to us within a day or two with a quote. Sandy has been very responsive and helpful. We look forward to 3 Chicks Kitchen's help with this event.

Allen and Smoke Shack were the perfect caterers for our outdoor summer wedding! They were incredibly easy to work with in the months and weeks leading up to the event and worked with us to create the perfect menu/presentation. We really felt like we had nothing to worry about once they were there. Mary even put together a little plate of dinner and desserts in our on-site suite for us so we could actually have a bit of our wedding meal! And the food was amazing!! Especially the pulled pork, bbq sauce/rub, and mac and cheese! Overall, Smoke Shack was very affordable, the food was delicious, and the service was above and beyond. Definitely recommend!

Leshner and Sarah are a pleasure to work with. They are extremely responsive, professional, and prompt. Their gourmet food truck is exactly what our event called for. Leshner's menu offering was more than we had expected - a bit exotic and delicious! The presentation was spot on for our black tie plated meal. These 2 are an outstanding couple providing amazing results for The Orange Crunch Catering.

For the record, Jenny, is such a kind and honest individual. It took a lot of research and countless hours of contacting other companies to finally find such a gem to cater for our wedding day! I can remember our first conversation and quickly picked up she prided herself on her work ethic and integrity. After working with her for months leading up to our wedding, I can honestly say, she encompasses said traits. Not only did she do an outstanding job connecting with us, meeting with us and our venue, communicating and listening to our needs, but she also cooks DELICIOUSLY! Her Mexican food was delicious and got quite a few compliments from our guest, and so does a great job at serving, cleaning and neatly displaing her food. She even offered delcious vegan and vegetarian food options. Overall, she did an outstanding job on our wedding day; I am eternally grateful to her and her small, but growing business. She truly made our wedding day even more special as it all went by so smoothly. It was such a delight to work with someone so honest, in a money hungry world. You won't regret working with her; she is highly recommendable!

I've hired Dana twice to cook special lunches for our construction workers on the job site. Dana made the whole process as easy as pie. She delivered a full compliment of fresh, delicious entees, side dishes, condiments, plates, the whole package. It all arrived steaming hot, on time and fit our tight budget. The food disappeared in minutes and every single worker thanked us and said it was fantastic. It all should have cost twice that much. We couldn't believe it, so we did it again. We will hire Well Seasoned Personal Chef for anything that requires cooking in the future and you should too. You will not be disappointed.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

        • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
        • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
        • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
        • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

        • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
        • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
        • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
        • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
        • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
