Mr. Barraza has been my teacher for a couple of years. I took guitar classes with him in high school. He is just outstanding in all the work he does. The dedication he would give me as well as every other student would go above and beyond expectation. He is a very intelligent, noble, and caring person. He is fluent in both English and Spanish, and his thirst for knowledge is insatiable, so whether you want to study music, Spanish, math, reading, writing etc. Mr. Barraza would a great choice for you, truly a great teacher for all ages.

Melissa is a joy to work with! Coming from no Spanish language background, she took me from beginner to intermediate level Spanish within several months. I felt much more comfortable traveling to Latin America and she helped prepare me to work in a clinical setting. She is patient, fun, and thorough. Not only is she adaptable with her teaching style (I can be all over the place sometimes), she makes learning fun and one can quickly tell how much she loves the language. I also enjoy talking culture, food, and traveling with her. I highly recommend Melissa for any Spanish language/culture needs!!

It is not easy to learn a language at the age of sixty-four. However, it has always been a dream of mine to learn French. After five months of classes, it is starting to become a reality. I can honestly say I am understanding all the complexities of the language and it is starting to make sense. Martie Helweg has been a superb teacher and I would highly recommend her skills to anyone who is serious about learning a language. Barbara Fenton Denver, CO

Dee has been an excellent Spanish teacher who has helped me refresh my Beginning and Intermediate Spanish. I needed a customized lesson plan that focused on my weakness in the language instead of a broad generalized lesson, and Dee was able to hone in on the aspects I needed to improve upon - primarily listening to and writing in Spanish. I fully recommend Dee Iverson as a Spanish tutor!

I have been taking private french language lessons with Mathieu for 3 months and he is an absolutely wonderful teacher. He has in depth knowledge about the structure of the french language, he is always prepared for our lessons and I have learned so much about how to conjugate verbs in many tenses. He is always on time and I am thankful that I have found such a great instructor. I highly recommend him!

Mr. Morse is an excellent tutor. I have an eleventh grader that struggles with reading comprehension and writing. Mr. Morse started tutoring for us with very short notice and even read the book my nephew is reading in class, almost completely, by the first session (with only hours to prep). He has definitely helped my nephew understand what he is reading by relating it to what he knows and loves, (football, current events, etc) and inspires him to write better. Apprehensive at first, my nephew now looks forward to meeting with Mr. Morse and has a new found respect for language arts. We are fortunate he came along and glad we made the call. Thank you Mr. Morse, it is always a pleasure.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
