I am impressed. We live in a high end home (I don't mean to sound pretentious, it's just that the components are problematic). Our HVAC unit is Geo-thermal. I have had many different companies out to address the same issue (no air in through the bedroom vent) and finally Tim has given us a couple of solutions. This is on-going but at least we know why. We also had a problem with the venting of an indoor grill in the patio room. He has remedied that issue to the extent possible without switching any major components. We will continue to work with him and hopefully the plan to increase the motor for that vent will eliminate the venting problem for the grill and installing air flow fans will increase cooling and heat for the bedroom. His pricing was very reasonable, probably competitive but it's not worth a penny if the issues cannot be resolved. That's why I highly recommend him. Hard worker! Did a few extra things...no charge.

Our refrigerator stopped cooling and Mark came in a very timely manner and didn't quit until the problem was completely solved, even coming back after having left. It was great!

The two man team was very professional and thorough. They completed a deep clean and service on the air conditioner and replaced the capacitor. We immediately noticed an improvement on the AC output and overall comfort level in the house. They also completed a diagnostic of the existing heating and cooling systems, giving us an idea of their expected life span and what we can do to extend their use.

Michael is the best! I called Saturday afternoon and he came that evening! Diagnosed, gave a temporary fix, came back Monday and fixed it! Even did a check on the entire heat/cool system. AND he is a respectful, kind young man. I would call again and refer him whenever possible!

I asked Dr. HVAC to clean and sanitize my vents, service my furnace and change my thermostat to digital. I just purchased my home but never had any idea the vents were in a mess. Jesus took pictures showing the before and after shots of the vents. From what I saw in those pics...Jesus did a great job. I received my invoice, receipt and certification the same day...yes, I would recommend Dr. HVAC and I will be retaining him as my HVAC guy!!!

I highly recommend TopDawg Heating and Cooling. They seemed to know their product very well and they seem to be at the top of their profession but yet they don’t charge double or triple as the big companies do. That’s the highest compliment I can give. What more can you ask for as a consumer.

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

My experience with James and Notable Heating and Air was absolutely amazing! He wasn't just on time, he was early, and that is unheard of nowadays. He took the time to walk throughout my home with me and discuss a best fit game plan for my situation, without trying to sell me anything before he left. His strategy, and experience was greatly appreciated, and I will be moving forward with Notable Heating and Air for more work. Thank you!

The tech was on time and performed the needed service. However, the tech was supposed to provide 2 quotes for other repairs. He never provided these quotes. I contacted the company a few times, without much response and never received quote. Won't do business with 888 Heating again.

Michael, the owner of Goodfellas, came out and did a VERY thorough estimate for my A/C project. He actually measured my windows and doors and suggested placing a return air duct in my basement which no other estimator did. He took the time to make sure I understood everything and took the information to his office and spec'd the proper equipment for my home. Goodfellas provided me a very fair price for the equipment and labor. He showed up with an installer, Jay and also had an assistant. Very neat and clean installation and very professional at every step. I received great financing terms. They went over and above and I will gladly recommend Goodfellas to everyone looking to do a heating and cooling project. Thank you Michael!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
