We could not have been more pleased with Forest and the entire crew from Beyond Boundaries. When I initially started thinking about our bathroom remodel in the fall, the hardest part was finding a contractor who seemed interested in taking on such a small project (Denver contractors are busy these days!). Thankfully, thumbtack helped connect me with Beyond Boundaries. From the beginning, Forest made us feel like our project was important. He and his crew paid great attention to detail, were highly communicative, and took pride in their work. From Noe (who did the tile work), to the painter, electrician, glass door installer and plumbers, everyone was friendly, hard working, and went above and beyond. We couldn't be happier with the result. We will definitely be using Beyond Boundaries on all future home projects! Thanks to Forest and the team!

We had a pretty bad experience with a previous contractor that laid a crooked floor during a bathroom remodel. Omar and his crew demoed the floor, gave us expert advice on design and then laid a beautiful new floor for our project! One of my pet peeves is a contractor that is hard to reach. Not Omar. He is very quick to return calls and answer VMs. We highly recommend Touched By Tile for what ever project you may have.

Chris was great. I recently purchased a condo, and had some issues and necessary upgrades in both the garage and bathroom. Chris showed at the exact agreed upon time, he is super nice and personable. I showed him my issues and concerns, he offered his professional advice and we went after it to correct and complete the upgrades. Everything was taken care of in 4 hours. His is a total professional with a great work ethic, and very affordable. I could not be happier with the end results and cannot recommend Chris enough for any home projects. He will be my go to guy for any and all future needs.

Excellent, outstanding , well crafted, professional and a job well done. That's our description for the second floor, 21 fts. Patio extension he crafted on our house. It blend perfect with the existent patio. The bottom is also flushed and the columns are just the same style. Ryan was not only an excellent carpenter creating an exact extension of our existent patio, he also installed a barn door in our bathroom, installed a sliding door where a window was located, fixed the kitchen top cabinet and provided accurate guidance and advise at every single important decision we had to make in the process. His effort and dedication facilitated a stressful process. He is not only our carpenter; today is our friend. This wonderful man is extremely respectful, dedicated, positive, methodical on his crafting process. He is proud of his work's result and enjoyed the ride of remodel our house. He is well connected with skilled construction men that also helped in specific tasks at the house. If you are looking for a skilled, fair price, professional and dedicated carpenter or construction company which is licensed, possess insurance and know the legal process to get a construction permit, RW remodelers is the company you should trust.

Jarek did a fantastic job on replacing my front door. I was very impressed by his attention to detail and went above and beyond to correct other issues I had to make my front door perfect. He is priced very reasonably. I will use him soon to help me with my bathroom remodel. I dont write very many reviews, but Jarek is definitely a diamond in the rough. Highly recommended. Jason T.

Let me start off by saying that Chris is talented and a great handyman! I wound up not hiring him for the drywall work on account of it having asbestos in the wall and needing abatement, but his hourly pitch was fantastic, so I called him to do a partial renovation on my bathroom. He completely went with the flow, I hired him for a (not cheap) job, and he just finished it today. At the end of it, he'd laid tile, repaired drywall, moved in a vanity, shut off plumbing and completely sweat / replumbed some pipes, fixed a drain, cut and installed molding, moved some electric, and consulted on some additional work. I've never seen one guy do the work he did with the level of expertise he did it. I paid him immediately, and will definitely hire him any and every time I have weird jobs that require general handyman expertise that I don't feel comfortable doing alone. He'll also work with you, talk to you, and you'll be a better customer of handyman services for working with him.

I contacted Marc to install a new bathroom exhaust fan. He was able to do it within a day. The fan I purchased was too large, but he offered to make the adjustments and added on a small additional charge. His work was quite neat and he finished in a timely manner. He left the area very clean, and his price was very fair. I had contacted two other contractors who would have charged double the price. I would definitely recommend him.

Matt is an excellent handyman who was capable of doing everything I needed to get my house ready to sell. While homebuying/selling can be very stressful, Matt was certainly a very bright spot in the work that he did for me. His tasks included replacing the caulking in the bathrooms/kitchen, replacing door trim, patching and painting over some dings in the walls, and installing privacy film on several windows. There were probably a couple more things that I missed. Matt showed up every day at the time we agreed, and ensured a very high standard of quality with his work. My house was on the market for just 36 hours before we received an offer at $5k over asking, and I credit Matt's work with helping to make that possible. I would have him back any time to do more work on my new home.

Our bathroom was old and the victim of some horrible DIY attempts by the previous owners. BathPerfect did a total remodel and they gave great advice on ways to save money. Our quote was fast and super helpful, and although we had to wait a bit (they are crazy busy for a reason!), our contractor was so polite, professional, and kept us updated through the whole process. He even finished a day early! Would highly recommend to anyone looking to remodel a bathroom.

It took a while to find the right contractor for this job, but I'm so glad we kept looking until we found Mike. WOW! He found the problem quickly and then worked his butt off to fix it. He was cheerful, responsive, professional and my previously leaky shower looks amazing. THEN he fixed the holes in the ceiling downstairs (we were trying to find the source of the leak). THEN he cleaned both my bathroom and the work area in the garage so thoroughly I think they're both cleaner than when he started! Pet owners - he's also fantastic around dogs and cats. There's no hidden agenda, no hidden costs and if anything I feel guilty that I didn't pay him enough for all the little extras he threw in, just to make sure the job was done correctly. No matter what my next project is, I'm calling Mike first.

My husband and I hired Custom Builders LLC (Kaleb) to tear down the half hall staircase leading to the second level of our home and replaced it with a open rail and baluster staircase. Kaleb's responsiveness throughout the job was great. We where kept informed about the timing of when materials would arrive and when each segment of the job would be completed. Kaleb's work is high quality and he kept a very clean work space between each segment of the project. We got very good value for the job. We had done some research about prices before we hired Custom Builders and found Kaleb's price for the job was very reasonable. The timing on completion of each segment of the job was longer than planned. Completion time was double the time that was initially set. There were a number of issues with getting the correct materials from Kaleb's vender. If you are willing to work with a small contractor who does the work himself Kaleb Shultz (Custom Builders LLC) is your guy.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
