We weren't sure what to expect when we arrived for our tasting appointment to potentially hire Mama Lisa's for our upcoming wedding, but when we tasted the food it was delicious! And the price was affordable. We couldn't pass up the opportunity. When the day came the staff went above and beyond. They were outgoing and friendly and took such good care of us on our special day. As the bride and groom we were unable to eat almost at all, but before the reception started the staff let us take some food and hide with our secret meals before rejoining our guests. Our family and friends were excited about the menu items, and even those who weren't all raved about the food during, and after. A couple people even asked who we hired, either curious to hire for catering, or simply to eat at their restaurant. We absolutely love this business and all they did to take care of us. If you're looking to hire a caterer, I SERIOUSLY recommend you contact Mama Lisa's and get your tasting appointment scheduled. I am very impressed with the food, kindness and professionalism that this business has.

Fly Boys Chefs truly delivered outstanding not gourmet food and service. It was amazing to experience such an organized and personal event. They literally made everything we wanted happen: down to the unusual requested chocolate chip cookie & milk shooter dessert! We are thrilled we went with such quality and personal catering for our wedding. Thanks you Fly Boys. We can't wait for our 1 Year Anniversary dinner!

Salt of the Earth was an incredible company to work with! They went ABOVE and BEYOND anything we could have hoped for in a catering company. The food at our wedding received many compliments along with the efficiency and personal service this company provided. Patrick and Sherry are personable via email and in person. They will enhance your wedding with their presence and participation. If we ever need another caterer for any event I will be calling them first. 10 out of 5 stars!

I have worked with Chef Scarlett on several occasions over the last 10 years. The quality of her efforts have been nothing short of outstanding. I even got her to cater my wedding. She is one of those rare individuals that can completely understand what you are intending to communicate that then deliver it literally on a silver platter. Her recognition of the differences between taste and TASTE is without equal. I cannot overstate how completely I have been satisfied with her work (from breakfast to midnight snacks I might add).

The food was great!! Janie was very very helpful, flexible and responsive leading up to the wedding. However, during the wedding we were asked several times about when pictures would be done and when they could start serving and we felt some stress and pressure to hurry everything else so they could start serving. It's not fun being asked over and over about when we would be done while trying to get things done as quickly aa possible. So we didn't appreciate that part of the experience but everything else was great!

Chef Tussaint did an excellent job catering for my friend's wedding. My friend, Marissa, wanted her wedding to have a southern style, comfortable, but delicious food selection. Marissa's mom wanted some of her home recipes to be involved in the wedding, too. Chef Tussaint was more than willing to put these recipes to use! And boy did he ever. The food came out hot, fresh, tender, juicy, and so very mouth watering. I could go on and on about how great a job Chef Tussaint did, but point blank, I recommend everyone use him. Not only was Chef Tussaint so agreeable with all the food options that were being thrown at him, but his execution was top notch.

Mommas custom catering provided dinner and the cake for our wedding. Let me tell you, it was amazing. He asked exactly we wanted and he delivered. Our country themed wedding had tender, juicy BBQ chicken, potato stuffed mushrooms, cornbread and home made potato salad. We were in heaven and or guests raved for days about the food. The cake he designed was BEYOND what I could've imagined. The details were, I can't describe how beautiful each one was. From the handmade fawns, to the handmade calililies. And the cake itself.... WOW! Moist, delicious and more! I wanted to eat the whole thing myself. The cost for over 60 people was beyond reasonable too. We priced numerous places, and for everything we got, i felt bad paying just what he quoted. Because it was the most reasonable and the product in the end was worth way more. Trust me when I say you will NOT be disappointed!

I have been using Chef Jason and 5280 Culinary for years. I have entrusted him and his team to do everything from my wedding, to high level brand events for 3ZERO3 Motorsports events. His passion for food comes thru in all that he does. From mild to wild, his menus and pricing are as flexible and diverse as the spice rack in his test kitchen. It is with the highest confidence that I recommend his services to anyone who needs help with anything food related.

We chose Big Daddy's catering for our wedding day. We chose two main courses and three apetizers, and every bite of it was perfect. Joshua made sure we didn't have to worry about a thing on our day. Everything was great, and went smooth. Food was set up on time, warm and delicious! I would definitely choose their service again!

With more than six months out, we had secured a restaurant, and menu, out of Denver to cater our wedding in Canon City at the Robison Mansion. Three weeks before the wedding we received a call that the restaurant was closing at the end of the week, and we would have to find someone else to cater our event. My worst wedding nightmares were coming true! BUT - my mother went down to the Kitchen Pantry and was introduced to Jodi of Classic Country Catering, who jumped right in and said that she would love to cater our wedding. She was a serious miracle in our time of need - she jumped right in and took charge in a way that eased every worry I had. From taking charge of dish rental to offering a more extended (and delicious) version of the menu we had chosen (which certainly wasn't a wedding-traditional menu), she was amazing from start to finish. She even created a most beautiful display where the food was served. I take pride in being a person who enjoys delicious and nutritious food, and Jodi and her team were amazing at providing just what we wanted. I can't even begin to count the number of guests who mentioned how delicious the food was! I would recommend her over and over again to anyone looking for a caterer in Canon City and surrounding areas. You will be lucky to have her.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
