Colin recorded my three children for competition audition tapes and did a truly excellent job. He was available at the last minute and was very reasonably priced. The recordings he made were of excellent quality. Patient and supportive, he went the extra mile to upload the kids audio/video files to the competition, allowing us to make the deadline by just a few hours. I would recommend him to anyone without reservation.

Motion Artisan was amazing! They were really fun to be around on the day of the wedding. And they are VERY talented! The highlight video that they made for me is incredible. I still watch it almost every day and it brings me to tears almost every time. It just totally captures the entire day and it is really well done! High quality video and audio. I am SO GLAD that I hired them. Also worth mentioning is that they got the videos to me 4 days after our wedding! I was shocked. I don't know if that is normal, but I couldn't believe how quickly they produced everything after the event. It was amazing and so fun to get to watch the videos on our honeymoon. Another fun thing is that they have a drone. So they can get aerial video if that works for your wedding day. We went to a field to take photos between the ceremony and the reception and they got some really fun video using the drone of just the two of us in the middle of the field. It was really cool. Overall, I think that Motion Artisan is very underpaid :) You get way more than your money's worth. Hire them! :)

I took my 15 year old daughter in to Greg for her first recording experience. As Greg has said on his website, you need to "ask the right questions." We did not even know where to start. Greg and his awesome crew welcomed us in and over the course of a few months, my daughter has recorded four great songs with musicians that Greg provided, her songs have been mixed and mastered and they are amazing, Greg and his crew have filmed a video for one of the songs, and Greg has helped immensely with teaching us the ropes of marketing & the music business. If you want suits & ties, DO NOT go to KMG. This crew loves and lives music. If you want genuine people who will listen, embrace you like family, and work until all hours of the night, then call KMG. Their equipment and studios are top of the line, and with the expansion Greg has done, I have to think, KMG has BEST equipment between LA and Nashville. We have been extremely pleased with our time there, and with all of the talented people who work there. Frankly speaking, I have a lot of years in college & I can't do any of what Ryan can do to engineer a song at the soundboard. The instrumentation, computers, electronics, and sound quality is not something you get sitting listening to a professor. These guys have extraordinary talent, and it's all in one place at KMG. If you are considering recording, definitely give them a call.

VP Legacies had no problem with our complex Kickstarter project video. They shot live video and audio of children and adults, then integrated the clips with multiple illustrations, voice-over, a previously recorded dramatic audio performance, royalty-free images, audio clips, and video clips, and added special transitions and video effects. Quality VP Legacies proved that they were committed to delivering the highest quality finished project for us. They used high quality video, audio, and lighting equipment including the newest cameras capable of shooting an entire room of kids, and then, in the editing room, being able to feature closeups on individual faces. They used multiple very sensitive mics, a high quality camera drone, and powerful editing software to bring everything together. They provided great video clip, image, and music selections. When we received the final edit, my team found no room for improvement. Value for Services VP Legacies provided a great value for service. They helped us set a realistic budget and worked with us on cost containment during the project. They had great turn-around time, even though we gave them significant feedback. They delivered a very high quality product on time at a reasonable price. You can’t ask for better than that. Expertise and Work Together VP Legacies also had a great understanding of camera angles, integrating natural and stage lighting, and capturing the voices of the host and the kids aged 7 to 15 years old. Back in their workshop, they integrated multiple types of media, while helping us with layout and fonts for titling and captions. These guys were easy work with. There was extensive personal interaction with their team and ours throughout the project. They had a time-saving easy feedback process through Vimeo so they could hear multiple opinions from us. They worked with time constraints on the availability of talent and a director we flew in for the shoot. They worked efficiently with the kids, making them feel comfortable and not intimidating them. They provided suggestions during the shoot, but respected the authority of the Director. Bottom Line - I couldn’t decide if Jonny and his team were best at shooting live video, doing the editing/computer work, or working with our project team during the editing process. Each was equal and excellent. Now, we consider VP Legacies as part of our team. John Richards Author, The Energy Wizard

Billy is wonderful! we we're having a destination wedding and so we were booking him based on one of his previous wedding videos that he was able to show up prior to booking and we decided it was worth taking our chance. He blew it out of the water, he was so professional, he worked incredibly well with our photographer, he captured every detail that meant the most to us, our audio was great, he captured scenery and the way he put our highlight video together was just emaculant, it couldn't have come out any better. Billy is wonderful and extremely pleasant to work with, I would recommend him to anyone for anything!!

I've worked with Erik professionally for over 15 years on a daily basis. I'm a professional photographer with over 30 years of working experience in all aspect of the field. Do you remember the TV show M*A*S*H? Well, Erik's hearing is akin to Radar O'Reilly's character. As an audio engineer, he can hear things before you do, identify them, and take corrective action. His editing skills in both video and audio are excellent, and his professionalism is blossoming in his new found talent in the art and science of still photography. Don't hire a guy with a Costco DSLR who calls himself a photographer, or rely on your friend who's in a band to do your audio. Hire a pro. Hire Erik. Working with Ross and Annette at Emerald Fox Productions was a fantastic experience from start to finish. From our initial bid/meeting to the delivery of our final photos and video shoot, they were professional, friendly and went above and beyond our expectations. Our band hired them to film our concert at the Dickens Opera House and take photos of the performance as well. They edited shots from multi camera videos for four songs and a compilation highlight video of our performance. The color, camera angles and editing were perfect and in addition the audio quality was superior. I recommend any band, or artist who wants to have a high quality and professional video shoot should consider Emerald Fox productions first!

Really glad I came across Austin randomly on Thumbtack. I wanted to surprise my brother and soon to be sis-in-law with a videographer. Austin was the way to go! He was there the whole day, on time, super calm, and asked the approproate questions. He was respectful and stayed out if the way but captured what he needed to. I almost forgot he was there! He was perfect for their rustic/barn/outdoor wedding in Evergreen, CO. He even got some footage of wild elk, which he incorporated. Loved his style, quality, and the audio match with the video. Thanks Austin! We will recommend you to friends getting married in the future!

I've been playing guitar for over 7 years, learning from books and YouTube videos. But, I wasn't improving. I started taking lessons from Alex, and just after the first lesson, I improved my technique and rhythm. Alex has an amazing knowledge of guitar and explains and demonstrates just what I need to do to improve. I've been very happy with my progress. Thanks Alex!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
